Hi Jo, just re-watched this video as getting a logo stamp is one of my (many) unfinished projects. I like the idea of having a stamp that is as flexible as possible, ie can be used on a wide variety of materials. I'll also be making my own press based on the one made by Brothers Make. This has the advantage of having a much larger surface area that would in your case remove the need to move your work piece when using the larger stamp. I'll also be trialing using a heat gun as the method of heating the stamp for embosing. i also agree with your practice of where possible supporting local makers and crafters. Yes things may cost more than elsewhere but I find that I have a much better idea of what sort of quality I'll be getting as well as better/easier support if there are any issues.

I put a piece of wood either side of the stamp and tighten it up in the vice ,mgoes on evenly and as deep as you like by turning the vice ....its a muck around but works lovely as i got a intricate norse design and its flat like yours

Very helpful! I’ve never done leather stamping, but I just learned how to do book binding, and I’d like to try embossing a pattern onto the leather.

👍 Thank you for the demonstration. Although it takes skill. I still had no idea that bossing leather was that easy. It appears as though it's a skill set that could be easily learned. Adding one more bragging right to the do-it-yourselfers.

Great video! I use stamps printed on 3D printer. This solutions works quite well and is probably the cheapest.

This can be a great option and is something I have tried myself; however, from my experiments there are a few issues which need to be taking into consideration. Due to the nature of the plastics being used (assuming FDM here) they only have a short life span when exerting pressure using a press such as an arbour or fly press. They don't give a clean embossing, they do not have the clean edge that a brass or copper stamp can give.The top surface, even with ironing, means that artifacts can be seen on the leather. You can't get the small details that you can with other stamps, even if you print with something like a 0.2mm nozzle, as such lower case letters a and e are a nightmare and the word leather contains both of these. Having said that, if you design a stamp which takes these into consideration by using a larger font, not having small detail, post processes the stamps etc you can get quiet good results and it certainly can be a very cheap method of providing personalisation, but I still feel the small investment in a good makers stamp is worth it. I wonder if you have experienced any of these issues?

You are absolutely right. 3D printed stamps have two basic advantages. There are cheap and fast (assuming that you have own 3D printer). I cant imagine such stamping in mass production. I will try make a video how i use 3D printed stamps.

I'm surprised you kept going back to the same person since you didn't have good luck before. My only concern with moving the item to press the stamp evenly is the stamp moving. I think I'd attach a thick piece of steel on top of the stamp or to the bottom of the press shaft.

Great video. I was wondering what size stamp would you recommend on a minimalist leather wallet? I was thinking around .5"/13mm. Would you think that is just right, too big or too small? I love your videos by the way.

I found this video super informative so thank you very much! I just have one question though: if you wanted to emboss your leather with some gold detail, I'm assuming you'd use some sort of gold foil right? Would you put the said foil on to the leather, then the stamp and then press down with the arbor press? And how would you get the gold to last for a long time, is there something you can add on top of it?

Jo erm I don't know who this Rod is you keep talking about, I think you mean ram :) Try a metal plate on top of your stamp under the ram, this will help displace the downward force more evenly across the stamp. I am surprised that whilst you have heated the stamps to blind emboss you do not seem to have used your hot foil machine to blind emboss; can you not use the threaded hole on the stamp to attach to the machine? There are other alternatives to etsy for these types of stamps, as can get much cheaper costing stamps from the far east which are made of copper and CNCed. Thanks for the video. Edit: I should add that from my experience of stamping, when you put leather under the leather which is being embossed, the stamp tends to produce a less defined image, less sharp. Just my 2p worth.
@JHLeather
@JHLeather 5 жыл бұрын
Hiya, I don't have an embossing machine but I think if they have the mechanism for screwing in a stamp then you diffidently could, also at the moment I am quite liking the plain embossing as its not in your face so much like a gold or sliver foil could be. I have the foils which I use with a hand type holder for putting initials onto stuff, and I think the foils would work well with the new stamps, but haven't had chance to use that yet. You can get a handle that screws into the stamps which would defiantly help if you were wanting to foil emboss. In terms of places to buy stamps like this I'm sure there are loads of places you can get them made, personally I like to support other British makers which is why I specifically chose the shop which I brought them from.
@dmail00
@dmail00 5 жыл бұрын
@@JHLeather I see, having seen that you do some hot foil embossing I though you had a machine. As for supporting UK workers, I would in most circumstances fully agree with you. However, having been a CNC operator in the past and whilst I was supplying the art work which means it only requires throwing it into software to produce the gcode , transferring to the machine, clamping the work and basically you can walk away. In my eyes there is no justification for the huge mark up UK suppliers make on these stamps, but each to there own. Thanks.
