Just found out my wife is pregnant with our first IVF baby, and as the non-biological and non-carrying mum, I’m terrified I’m not going to love the baby (even though it is very much wanted). Remembered this video (not just the song but the preamble too) from seeing it a few years back, and came for solace and reassurance. I sit in the parking lot of daycare dreading the responsibilities of this child, and the other two, that I was so blessed to create. They have stolen my time, but the return has been nothing less than miraculous. I am tired. I grieve the loss of myself, but Brandi put it so perfectly in this song, that I’m hearing for the first time. All of the losses that I believe exist, I will gain again one day, through their eyes. Such a refreshing thought.

Enjoy the chaos, the messes, the warm snuggles in the middle of a dirty house…. One day you will be wanting those babies to come over for holidays, or visits and they will be far and few between. If you look back at all of her work, I think there is a marked difference in her songs, and even how she sings the older ones, in the last few years. I feel deprived I had not been previously introduced to Brandi's art. As a fellow out-gay person, I celebrate Brandi for being out, and also for telling her story, our stories, in such a personal and deep way.
