For me this song is one of the greatest compositions of melody and lyrics ever to come out of American popular music. So much emotional truth and subtlety. And then Brandi puts every ounce of honesty and emotion into the delivery: this is one of her distinguishing characteristics--I have never seen or heard a performance in which she did not seem to be totally invested in the story of the song. Rarely have we seen such a combination of gorgeous voice, brilliant songwriting and charismatic performance. She will never be as famous as Lady Gaga or Beyonce, but she is every bit as good. Though this particular song was written by the twins, Brandi's songwriting catalog is brilliant. Like Dylan, Paul Simon, the Beatles, she points us to deep truths about life through poetry and song.

I first this song on a British show and it was sung by LeAnn Rimes so I searched for who wrote it and who first recorded it. I had never heard of Brandi Carlile or the Hanseroth twins. Well I have now, a vastly underrated band and one of my favourites. I am surprised The Story was not a hit in the UK for Brandi and from my research she is little known, a great pity.
