My beautiful daughter died by suicide in 2014, she was 33. She LOVED you and went to any concert she could to see you. This song was played at her service and it’s so beautiful. Finally we are taking Katie’s ashes to Ireland in September, we will stand on the Cliffs of Moher and let her go. We will play ‘The Story’, and cry. You made her so happy. 💜

"All of these lines across my face, tell you the story of who I am, so many stories of where I've been and how I got to where I am". These words saved me during many rounds of chemo and radiation. I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I had a kindergartener and a 4th grader. My boys were so young, I told my oncology team, bring it on, I can take it...I just have live long enough to get them through high school. The chemo took it's toll and aged me so much faster than my friends, it was hard to deal with. Now I know the lines across my face tell the story of where I've been. 15 years out and one boy has graduated from college and one who is a Junior...both are thriving and I celebrate life every day. Thank you, Brandi for putting into words, what I could not.

@@mikamamma I haven't heard Shelby Lynn's music in awhile. She is not a current artist. I had a couple of her CD's in the late 90's. I am not sure if she still records music. She started out as country on the 1st CD that I bought and then went more bluesy on the 2nd CD. She played Johnny Cash's mom in the movie Walk the Line. Literally the only song I remember loving back then of hers is called something like "What About the Love We Made". I loved the soul in her voice. Just talking about this makes me want to explore her music again. 🙂

I hate to feel this way (cuz I love Brandi) but I sometimes feel that her vocal breaks are contrived...not natural.

@@457Deb I get ya…I can feel the same way about certain singers, myself. I don’t feel that way about Brandi, though. It may be because I don’t listen to enough of her songs. I cant believe I heard this song for the first time today while driving along the Hudson in the Adirondacks. It broke me and I needed it. So many losses and too many deaths contrasted with meaning barely unfolding and so little joy, it all just builds up to a moment when only something so powerful as these words sung from this voice releases the inexpressible, crushing inner vexation of the soul, and I can breathe again. Even for 5 minutes. It'll have to be enough. Thank you, God.

Our stories are meant to be told! Our hurts, our joys, our sorrows. Even our embarrassment and shame are meant to be told! They are meant for others! From website of Jeffery Pepper Rogers : “Her [Brandi’s] bandmate Phil Hanseroth wrote “The Story” before they even started playing together. Since her debut, all of the music appearing under the name Brandi Carlile has been the product of an extraordinarily close partnership of Carlile and the twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth. All three write songs and share the writing credits equally for every song regardless of who contributes what (à la Lennon and McCartney).”

I found Brandi Carlile years ago because of Grey's Anatomy, & have loved her & this song ever since ... she's an amazing singer & this song is one of my very favorites ever !! 💜💜💜 (especially love the rasp, voice break, & emotion she has around 2:53) ... Brandi has done other amazing work as well, & is also now part of a female group called Highwomen (a takeoff on the name of the male country supergroup called Highwaymen) ... most recently she has done a new album with Tanya Tucker, both singing with her & co-producing it along with Shooter Jennings ...

My mom has loved Brandi for ever since I can remember, she’s been to at least seven of her concerts and I’ve been to three. Two months ago I attempted to take my own life. When I was in the recovery mental facility for several weeks the nurses would let us each pick a song to listen to during hygiene time, and I always picked this one, every time, and every time I would cry, but for some reason I knew everything would turn out ok. When I needed her most, I reverted to what comforted me as a child-this song. She will never see this, but Brandi gave me a piece of my mother when I was far from her and hurting, and it saved me. Thank you so much for this Brandi.

Oh Lily, I also find this song strangely comforting, perhaps because every word captures the greatest losses and loves of my life: the death of my 28-year-old son in 2002, the divorce from my soul mate five years later. I have learned to live with both, but my life is forever diminished. I have another son (his brother) and my love and our shared loss keep me going. Bless you and hold tight to your relationship with your mother, which sounds like a Godsend.
