When this song first came out, I was in high school. One of my favorite radio stations was a 70s 80s 90s light rock station. They were known to play two or three Mercy Me songs, so when I heard “The Reason” for the first time, I immediately thought it was a new Mercy Me song. I talked to one of our church piano players and asked if I could sing this song with her in church. When I found it was a secular song, I couldn’t believe it, but sang it in church anyway. I sang it right before communion. When the guy who had communion came up after we sang, he didn’t give his message because he said I basically gave it for him. Powerful song either way, but more so when we are singing it to God!
