What I love about your videos is that your design starts off so rough, but you're able to transform it into something that looks fantastic. This is something I struggle with since I find it hard to imagine the end result from the start. So I have to ask: how do you prepare for a design before you start making it in Photoshop? If you have any particular approach, I think we'd all appreciate seeing how you think!
@BrandonShep4 жыл бұрын
Great question, John! 1) I usually start by making sure I understand the design brief well, because a brief gives you the most important thing - Constraints. It's much easier to be creative within a set of boundaries than if you have endless possibilities. 2) Then, I head over to Pinterest and make a moodboard of other designs/styles that inspire me. It's important to draw inspiration from areas other than the one you're working on. For ex. for a packaging design, I may look at examples of web design or magazine layouts. Pull from all areas, and you'll be able to borrow techniques that others don't often find because they have tunnel vision. 3) I try to think of one core element of the design, whether that be the title, a featured graphic, a color scheme, and then build on that. You have to have a center to start with that you can expand on. 4) Then, try a bunch of things. Never just sit and stare at your screen. If an idea pops into your head, just do it instantly. Push things as far and as crazy as you can. This is where creativity actually happens. 5) You'll often find a piece of gold in Step 4. Once you have it, focus on it and conform the whole design around it. Always ask how each element will be perceived and utilized by the end user/customer. Make slight improvements till you end up with something you're happy with. And don't be afraid to throw away what you have if it's not working. 6) Get other people's opinions on it. That's the only way we grow :)
@FOBsinCanada4 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonShep Wow, thanks for taking the time to answer my question so thoroughly! I really like the fourth point you made. I struggle a lot with conceptualizing before designing, which is a huge flaw because creativity is spontaneous, not planned. Keep up the phenomenal videos!

Thank you for another great upload.

Thank you! I find that designing inside the mockup helps me get a better sense of the final result. But, it also is usually just a draft phase for me. After you get something looking good on the mockup, you have to take it over to an actual print-ready template file, and layout the design elements there, which is an extra step. It's always a trade off of results and efficiency :)
