I remember in my high school art class that if you had a black background & random lines or spots of every color on the color wheel spread out on it, our eyes typically are drawn to yellow 1st then red 2nd. This is why most fast food places use either yellow & red or orange as their logos since it draws the eyes of people in quickly when they're driving.

I think the minimalist design for known brands doesn’t work because a lot of generic store brands tend to have that style already (and did in 2009). Streamlined/clean = cheap/value, which I would suspect is what these brands have actively tried for and when a bigger brand tries to do that, they’re just going to get lost in the shuffle, because their price isn’t going to imply additional value in that context, just that it’s more expensive.

Peoples eyes naturally like imagery that stands out. And with the modern flat minimal corporate design, you don't have that. It becomes boring, and doesn't tell you much, other than the obvious parts. And if a generic brand offers better visual appeal, they may end up getting the money instead. You don't sell many apples by stuffing them all in a blank solid red box with the word "apples" on it in segoe font.

I noticed Pepsi and Fanta changed their logos last year to be less minimalistic. Funny that you mention Nintendo's association with red: although it was indeed very present in Occident, in Japan you wouldn't find any red Nintendo logo on any boxart. Even the in-game logos were white or blue before being recolored to red on export. Then they ditched the red in all regions for more than ten years, until the release of the Switch when they went for a red background instead of the red foreground. I only found out about this very recently and I was really surpised: like you, I kind of associated the red-on-white Nintendo logo with the Japanese flag.

Seeing how things are nowadays, i feel so lucky I was born in '89. Back then I never could have guessed things would have changed the ways they have. It was such a great time to be a kid. The world seemed to have so many creative outlets & forms of expression. Ways that kids, teens and adults could enjoy themselves. Places to go, things to do, unique style and design, Entertaining movies with practical effects. Animated movies/shows, video games galore. If they used CGI it was used intelligently. I really miss the Vibe of that Era where it treated all of us as if we had intelligence, while also keeping our inner kid in us alive. It felt like everything acknowledged how important YOU were as a fan, customer, person because without us they would be nothing. The creativity that came from that era really put effort into that creativity, not this bland minimalism. I really hope we find a way to reconnect with it because the world seems like it really needs it right now. Look how batshit crazy so much has become nowadays? Video games can't even be video games anymore! Also look at the horrible aesthetics & poor quality & creative design in modern shows, movies, & games now. Things have become so bland, bleek, and minimalistic to the point that it doesn't even make since. Most Old house's/building's/uúnique shop's are gone. Interesting oddities like drive in movies, indoor fun zones, arcade's, magazines that came with a demo disc to try out game's, blockbuster/Hollywood video, McDonald's had N64's, you could preview music before buying it, they had great kid's toy's, Roller Rink's, Garbage pale kid's card's. You get the point. Bring back Retro-Futurism or Y2K Vibes. ANYTHING compared to this current Dystopian toxic positivity, virtue signaling, young people thinking they are the first people to speak up about injustices, advocacy movements? Yet our society feels more divided than it ever did. Society is solely focused on out of control capitalistic agendas. That anything that isn't constantly increasing profits is a failure and has no value to society? Our Quality of Life should be better than this. Basic living shouldn't be this unaffordable. People should be able to have fun playing a game without it having to virtue signal for something. The list goes on. Bring me back to the 90's.

Minimalist is one of the worst things in design not because it's bad, but because it's used without knowing what actually means. Real minimalism in an object is the process of eliminating every aspect of the object that doesn't contribute to make it recognisable, obtaining something that is pure and easy to use and you don't have to think about it. A Tesla isn't minimalist, it's overcomplicated in fact. A Fiat Panda by Giugiaro is minimalist, cause it has everything you need, nothing else, and the stuff you need is in reach of your body and where you expect it to find. Apple cursed the world with this misinterpretation of minimalism and now we live in a world of "what the heck is even this thing" since they're removing even the signals that made something recognisable in the first place.

Whereas a really good color scheme....I can't lie, it _does_ have an impact on me. I got my phone plan thru T-Mobile. Why? Cuz they have great coverage in my area and good plans. But also...that specific pink color they use, hooked me. The store itself was very well designed. Clean minimal white...but with that pink/magenta color employed in soft accent lights, diffused back-lit neon, etc. It gave everything this vibe that's hard to put to words. Modern, clean, unfussy, youthful, androgynous in a cool sleek way. Yes, on one level everything I've just said is beyond ridiculous. But it's also kinda true. It's both. Always taking it as a given that existing customers will continue to come back for more. When branding updates work, its either because the old branding was bad enough to be an active detriment to the product (Twix), or because high profile public backlash to the change tends to remind lapsed customers that the product exists (Dunkin').

You made an interesting point as brands like Apple and Dunkin' change their logo to be more minimalist, they make a conscious effort to strip it down to a mere symbol. As companies grow large there is a demand to make their brand mean less. This is akin to the structuralist idea that symbols are only supposed to have meaning in relation to other symbols (i.e. other brands). This also feels dystopian in a way that capitalism would ultimately morph businesses with a "personal" identity into a soulless blob of capital, losing its human element. (There are obviously exceptions like KFC that does the opposite, which retains the old man in the logo to mimic the identity it may or may not once had.)
