I remember in my high school art class that if you had a black background & random lines or spots of every color on the color wheel spread out on it, our eyes typically are drawn to yellow 1st then red 2nd. This is why most fast food places use either yellow & red or orange as their logos since it draws the eyes of people in quickly when they're driving.

I’m a graphic design student and everyone in my corporate identity class was aghast at the Tropicana rebranding. All of us knew it was bound to fail. Same thing with the Sierra Mist rebranding. There are tons of designers who hate the current trends, it’s just that we’re bound to make whatever our clients want from us, and this is what the corpo conglomerates want right now.

I think the minimalist design for known brands doesn’t work because a lot of generic store brands tend to have that style already (and did in 2009). Streamlined/clean = cheap/value, which I would suspect is what these brands have actively tried for and when a bigger brand tries to do that, they’re just going to get lost in the shuffle, because their price isn’t going to imply additional value in that context, just that it’s more expensive.

Peoples eyes naturally like imagery that stands out. And with the modern flat minimal corporate design, you don't have that. It becomes boring, and doesn't tell you much, other than the obvious parts. And if a generic brand offers better visual appeal, they may end up getting the money instead. You don't sell many apples by stuffing them all in a blank solid red box with the word "apples" on it in segoe font.

I noticed Pepsi and Fanta changed their logos last year to be less minimalistic. Pepsi's new logo looks closer to its 1970s logo and the new Fanta logo looks like its about to jump off of the packaging. I personally dislike the minimalism trend of the 2010s, so seeing some companies move back to bold logo design is refreshing.

Funny that you mention Nintendo's association with red: although it was indeed very present in Occident, in Japan you wouldn't find any red Nintendo logo on any boxart. Even the in-game logos were white or blue before being recolored to red on export. Then they ditched the red in all regions for more than ten years, until the release of the Switch when they went for a red background instead of the red foreground. I only found out about this very recently and I was really surpised: like you, I kind of associated the red-on-white Nintendo logo with the Japanese flag.

Seeing how things are nowadays, i feel so lucky I was born in '89. Back then I never could have guessed things would have changed the ways they have. It was such a great time to be a kid. The world seemed to have so many creative outlets & forms of expression. Ways that kids, teens and adults could enjoy themselves. Places to go, things to do, unique style and design, Entertaining movies with practical effects. Animated movies/shows, video games galore. If they used CGI it was used intelligently. I really miss the Vibe of that Era where it treated all of us as if we had intelligence, while also keeping our inner kid in us alive. It felt like everything acknowledged how important YOU were as a fan, customer, person because without us they would be nothing. The creativity that came from that era really put effort into that creativity, not this bland minimalism. I really hope we find a way to reconnect with it because the world seems like it really needs it right now. Look how batshit crazy so much has become nowadays? Video games can't even be video games anymore! Also look at the horrible aesthetics & poor quality & creative design in modern shows, movies, & games now. Things have become so bland, bleek, and minimalistic to the point that it doesn't even make since. Most Old house's/building's/uúnique shop's are gone. Interesting oddities like drive in movies, indoor fun zones, arcade's, magazines that came with a demo disc to try out game's, blockbuster/Hollywood video, McDonald's had N64's, you could preview music before buying it, they had great kid's toy's, Roller Rink's, Garbage pale kid's card's. You get the point. Bring back Retro-Futurism or Y2K Vibes. ANYTHING compared to this current Dystopian toxic positivity, virtue signaling, young people thinking they are the first people to speak up about injustices, advocacy movements? Yet our society feels more divided than it ever did. Society is solely focused on out of control capitalistic agendas. That anything that isn't constantly increasing profits is a failure and has no value to society? Our Quality of Life should be better than this. Basic living shouldn't be this unaffordable. People should be able to have fun playing a game without it having to virtue signal for something. The list goes on. Bring me back to the 90's.

Minimalist is one of the worst things in design not because it's bad, but because it's used without knowing what actually means. Real minimalism in an object is the process of eliminating every aspect of the object that doesn't contribute to make it recognisable, obtaining something that is pure and easy to use and you don't have to think about it. A Tesla isn't minimalist, it's overcomplicated in fact. A Fiat Panda by Giugiaro is minimalist, cause it has everything you need, nothing else, and the stuff you need is in reach of your body and where you expect it to find. Apple cursed the world with this misinterpretation of minimalism and now we live in a world of "what the heck is even this thing" since they're removing even the signals that made something recognisable in the first place.

The shots fired at Texas Roadhouse had me rolling lol! It bothers me on a primordial level when a company/brand has an arbitrary color aesthetic. Whereas a really good color scheme....I can't lie, it _does_ have an impact on me. I got my phone plan thru T-Mobile. Why? Cuz they have great coverage in my area and good plans. But also...that specific pink color they use, hooked me. The store itself was very well designed. Clean minimal white...but with that pink/magenta color employed in soft accent lights, diffused back-lit neon, etc. It gave everything this vibe that's hard to put to words. Modern, clean, unfussy, youthful, androgynous in a cool sleek way. Yes, on one level everything I've just said is beyond ridiculous. But it's also kinda true. It's both. And it's kinda fun to consciously recognize that's what's happening in real time.

Ah branding updates. The tireless drive to draw in more customers driving companies to do away with the old and trot out the new. Always taking it as a given that existing customers will continue to come back for more. When branding updates work, its either because the old branding was bad enough to be an active detriment to the product (Twix), or because high profile public backlash to the change tends to remind lapsed customers that the product exists (Dunkin').

Comment to boost this well made video in the algorithm. Also with a few tweaks that nee Tropicana packaging could be awesome.

Near where I used to live, a KFC still uses the old branding from the 80's/90's. Reason being it's so popular the community would have a fit if the shop closed for a month to be updated.

Same with a couple swiss energy network operators. That rebranding wave hit Switzerland a couple years back (we are a bit behind in such things, ya know, mountains n such).... and you dont recognize it anymore that its axpo because you are so acustomed to the red logo with an X that this rainbow thing now just gets blanked out in your mind. Time and time again, im surprised that all those highly pay'd "marketing experts" fail hard every time, yet still get a chunkload of cash... while a regular engineer would be fired after such a incident.

Reminds me of one famous Chinese coconut water brand, it is one of the most eyesore design ever but because it was such a bad design that has been so memorable and the item is very popular. If you ever curious about it, you can visit any local Chinese supermarket and you should be able to find it.

9:13 I honestly feel like I won't even bother going to "Dunkin'" anymore because the dropping of "Doughnuts" from their name makes me think they no longer sell doughnuts. Just my 2 cents on that matter.

Question: Why is *beige* so often the color of nature and rustic-ism? I don't encounter a lot of *beige* in my life, yet when I do, it's often in the form of some naturalistic/organic product marketing.

I need to use the color theory to choose the color of my own brand logo wisely and carefully. I also need to make it simple, but too simple.

You made an interesting point as brands like Apple and Dunkin' change their logo to be more minimalist, they make a conscious effort to strip it down to a mere symbol. As companies grow large there is a demand to make their brand mean less. This is akin to the structuralist idea that symbols are only supposed to have meaning in relation to other symbols (i.e. other brands). This also feels dystopian in a way that capitalism would ultimately morph businesses with a "personal" identity into a soulless blob of capital, losing its human element. (There are obviously exceptions like KFC that does the opposite, which retains the old man in the logo to mimic the identity it may or may not once had.)

The reason Dunkin's rebrand was so effective, at least in my mind, was that most people already called them Dunkin (or some variation of) anyway. I didn't even notice the change myself, one day the sign said Dunkin Donuts, then they remodeled the store and the sign was just Dunkin.

It’s an odd rebrand because you need both words for it to make sense: you’re _dunkin’ donuts_ in your tea or whatever. Just being called “Dunkin’” works for people who were already aware of the original name, but makes no sense on its own. What exactly are you “dunking” and into what? Could be a basketball specialty store for all someone knows. Verbs are too vague to use on their own most of the time to only have one (or one very common) understanding on what it’s alluding to.

0:34 that’s easy because people don’t know it’s Tropicana anymore. If I like Tropicana and see the new design I’d feel like that’s some kind of off brand. You can’t make such a dramatic change without easing into it 2:10 that just proves my point

I'm of the opinion that Tropicana's packaging didn't work because at a first glance you wouldn't be able to recognize it anymore from the original, so you think it's an entirely different brand. Also, logos that are turned 90 degrees so they have to be read by tilting your head... not helping.

Couldn’t disagree more about Dunkin’ Donuts, I still call it Dunkin’ Donuts, Dunkin’ does not feel like a complete name, and the rebrand has changed nothing about how I perceive the company or its products and I often forget it even happened because most people I know still call it Dunkin’ Donuts also the little change of making the bottle cap a little orange on the rebranded Tropicana cartons was actually kinda cool
