2020 was a strange and chaotic year, but Apple still released the iPhone 12 and while it might have been the only good thing to come out of that year, how does it hold up in 2023? Is the camera, battery life and performance still worth it, or should you pay up to buy the iPhone 13 or iPhone 14?

Technology has not much to improve. Installing apps for every day use don't need that much computer power. My laptop is 8 years old and still good.

I currently own a 12 Pro Max and find it great. My last iPhone was the 5. In between those years, I owned Samsung Note phones. My sister owned a regular 12 and gifted it to my mom recently.The 12 is a great overall phone.

Thanks, Brandon. I picked up my 12 Pro Max when they'd just come out, and you make me feel good about hanging on to it. I was a hold-out for team Andriod in my family. I think this is a great phone to cross over with. I'm satisfied for what I do with it. My battery health is at 89% so I'm only considering replacing the battery in the future because with 256 GB storage, I'm all set until something major comes down the pike.

Used my iphone 12 for 2 years and I’ve got no complaints whatsoever! Just the low brightness in broad daylight, always reloading apps while multi tasking and no telephoto lens. That’s why I upgraded to iphone 14 pro now! The upgrade was totally worth it!

We actually just upgraded our daughters phone to an iPhone 12 she was on an SE and we just didn’t feel like she needed something brand new that just came out so we got her the basic 12 and she’s very happy with it. She’s in high school and uses it quite a bit and she has loved it.

I had my 12 with 256GB storage since launch and the battery health recently went down to 85%. I doubt I will change the phone anytime soon as it does what I need it to do quite well. I almost always have my work laptop or iPad with me so there is little need for multi-tasking. Will look into changing the battery though.

I have an iPhone 12, which I bought new in January 2021. I’m waiting to see what the 15 is like as the 13 or 14 didn’t seem to have enough improvement for me to replace it. It still does what I need perfectly so I don’t feel that it needs replacing imminently

Got my iPhone 12 Pro Max on launch day and it still holds up absolutely amazing. Performance is plenty good and as you said Brandon extremely similar to the latest iPhones. Only two things I don't like about this phone is the zooming in and battery life. The iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max with that 48MP sensor looks just as crisp when you zoom in compared to when you don't but unfortunately the iPhone 12 series lacks that feature. As for battery life, my battery health is at 86% which explains the shorter battery life but that's an easy enough fix. The display is great, the notch goes unnoticed 99% of the time, and there's no reason to overspend on a new iPhone if you are on a budget.

My 12 mini is still undamaged and going strong. Battery is 86% now, but it charges so quickly that doesn’t bother me. I also have an 18 watt power bank with me everywhere. Take a lot of photos, record sound (with Shure MV88) and video. But I take s lot of low light shots and the 13 mini of a buddy of mine just does a much better job.

Interesting that you found the low light shots to be much better on the iPhone 13 since I have tried both the 12 and 13 and found the difference negligeable in the average indoor lighting scenario. Unless by low light you mean near dark situation, where the 13 might have a more distinct advantage, though I would think it would be a question of which is less crappy at that point (i.e. the 13 would be bad and the 12 would be even worse), so neither would be particularly useful.

I currently have a a 14pm but use a 12 for a back up device and I can say in 2023 it still performs great the battery still decent and so is the camera and performance I do recommend this if you can find it for a decent price as far as day to day usage it feels just a tad bit slower that’s because of the 60hz vs 120hz

Still using my 12 Pro Max since launch. There's nothing to complain about. Nothing lags, pictures/videos look great to me. I use my phone A lot! My average screen on time is 8 hours a day because I also use this phone for work. The battery health is still at 85% capacity, which is good enough for me. And honestly, I am not seeing a reason to get the 15 this year. Maybe for the USB-C? I would definitely upgrade to an Ultra model, though.

The battery health is declining (83% currently), but I’ll get it replaced rather than get a new phone. my 12 Pro replaced my 6s in January 2021 and I still have no issues. battery health at 87 over ~600 cycles, still gets me through the day. camera is still phenomenal, proraw shots are great. i think i miss the macro mode most in terms of camera performance when compared with the newer flagships, but i can live with it. The display is also still fantastic, but i will be very pleased when i upgrade to something a little brighter in hdr content. 1200nits sure is good, but it's not 1600 or 2000 like the 14 series. promotion will also be extremely welcome. however, between my 144hz gaming monitor, my ipad pro 11in (120hz), and the 60hz display on iphone, i don't notice the difference nearly as much as i thought i would when switching between devices. Now the question is whether i upgrade to a 14 pro while all my lightning cables are still relevant, or wait to see what other new goodies the next generation brings along with usb-c.

I use it every day for work and yes screen time will drain your battery out and it’s a key factor but if you are like me and carry a fast charging battery pack with 30mins you are back at 50%+ and you can finish the rest of the day! @@perseus31 Samsung's flagships with Exynos CPUs entered the chat. When I got my 12 mini I was pushing ~12h of battery time out of it's tiny battery with WiFi, 4G, Bluetooth and Location all turned on and mostly using 4G throughout the day. I needed a phone that was reliable enough that can push through most of the day because I was away from home 14-15h a day at least, the 12 mini took the abuse like a champ.

If that 12h doesnt include more than 4 - 5 hours of battery, I cant say its a good score. I get 8 hours of SCREEN ON TIME when Im outside. So it may be enough for you, but I can say its lower than usual.

The iPhone 12 was amazing the entire time I had it and never had any performance issues or battery issues at all, the camera is excellent. I agree that the 12 is still a good phone to buy in 2023. I bought 12 mini after its release. It was my first iphone, up until then I was in android camp. Decided to mix it up a bit. Honestly, for me, it's the first phone that I'm not even contemplating of replacing after two years and am still happy with it. An though battery life could be better (was more or less an issue since day 1), other than that, the phone operates like brand new.

I disagree, the best value in the line up is clearly the iPhone 13 , the added ram, longevity ( thanks to it sharing the same processor as the 14s) , much better battery life , extra camera features portrait , cinematic , sensor shift stabilization and double the storage at 128gb. The 12 is great if it’s only what can fit in your budget but the 13 is the sweet spot. Also , most used iPhone aren’t going to have warranty or the ability to add AppleCare, if you crack the display you are going to spend 300 to fix it , not a good suggestion imo

I understand this is mostly due to the iPhone 12 going for 400 or less on the used market. I just am wary of the used market because you never know what can happen. More importantly repairs are so expensive even battery replacements just got more expensive as of March 1st. So it’s better to do a carrier deal imo, though I see your perspective cause as long as nothing is damaged your saving a bunch of money . It’s just a risk

Yeah I agree it’s just not worth it. If you want a cheap iPhone just get the iPhone 11 or the SE2. The 12 isn’t worth it even used because if you spent a little bit more you could just get the 13. I especially disagree when he said to sell your iPhone 11 and upgrade to the 12. You have to skip at least three generations of iPhones to get a significant upgrade these days.

iPhone 12 is the worst of battery, and their chipset are bad when you are using multitask. It very hot, when you play game mobile legend or codM. iPhone 13 is the best when you want play game or playing music even it hot, the chipset will not throttle too much.

​@@BrandonButch the battery life hasn't been a huge issue on my 12 as 5-6 hours is good enough for me to get through a day with, but one thing that I have noticed is the large amount of minor, but annoying glitches I've had with it. coming to IOS 16, I don't know if they also effect the 13's and 14's, but many of them I haven't seen being brought up on social media, like the dumb IOS 16 wallpaper that will randomly have a line through the middle where the layer that can cover a small portion of the bottom right side of the time is non-existent on the bottom half, along with making the time fond size smaller.

@@noahklassen1695 having the exact same issue with battery. Never been good form the start, like always has been an average one. I dont think i have experienced the same issue as you did with the wallpaper but i have other problemscan. Overall the phone feels slow, sometimes frame dropping even doing minor stuff like swipping the control center, closing apps, using the phone outside with direct sunlight too, things that i have not experienced with any other iphone before. Even my friends 11´s work better than mine as one day we left our phones in the car at the beach, when we came back they were all kinda hot, but only mine was lagging AF because throttling. Then i completely understand that my phone lives in perpetual mini throttle state as it is even with minor tasks, i couldnt make other conclusion. Hate this phone since i purchased it sealed last year. BTW, no, factory reset didnt help.

That was really a great and very helpful video you’ve made there B! 👏🏼 I wouldn’t have gotten the iPhone 12 when I had the 11 Pro Max, so I bought the 14 Pro Max less than two weeks ago and I’m so happy I bought it. I love it and the purple color is really awesome 👌🏼 I’m not that impressed with the battery if I compare it to my 11 Pro Max, but there’s other things in play on the 14 and that’s probably why 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m planning to buy the Apple Watch series 8 and the AirPods Pro 2. I am still rocking the iPhone 12 right now the product red one 64gb model. So far it has been pretty great even on the latest software update. Just battery life is okay enough.

@@fijiwill2237 really struggling with 64GB on my XS😭 Backups and downloading in lossless quality on Apple Music (30GB alone on songs🙈). I’m thinking of moving to the 12 with 128 GB or 12 mini with 256GB😅.

Needed a second phone, and after paying $XXXX a couple years ago for a flagship Samsung that was less than thrilling despite the steep price, thought I would look at an older iPhone. The 12pro seemed such a great phone and value, so bought an Apple refurbished product and it does not disappoint! Sometimes design and tech come together especially well, and IMHO the 12 was one of those occasions. Great video!

Hi Brandon, since I updated my iPhone 14 Pro to iOS 16.3.1 I have stutter screen while scrolling and in games, a white frame flashes when I open Lock Screen and battery drain. Do you think iOS 16.4 will fix it?

Got my iPhone 12 down in Tennessee for a Christmas gift (my uncle bought it just a week ago for 200 dollars). And by far it’s the best phone I have, I’ve recently had an iPhone 8, so the upgrade is better.

Hey Brandon, I love watching your videos on Apple stuff. I have an Apple IPhone 12 Pro Max love it but am wanting to upgrade either to the 14 or wait until 15 comes out not sure yet. But when I watch your videos for new updates and all I may get the 14 pro max and see how this years 15 sounds like once out. Got the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Been using since release. Was thinking of upgrading but wouldn’t really make sense for me. Planning on keeping it again if the 15 doesn’t have huge improvements/features

13 is the sweet spot in 2023 :) same chip as iPhone 14 and battery life is superior. Also feels More premium!! I got my 13 for 380 on eBay(excellent condition) it was either that or getting a new battery for my 12, but battery life was horrible on the 12 from the start. I’m happy with my upgrade. Camera is better too. It’s worth it to upgrade if you have a 12 to 13.

Loved the 12 PM. Bought the 13 PM recently and gave my son the 12 PM and skipped the 14 PM. IMO, 13 PM is going to be an all time best iPhone.

I have the 12 mini and I have loved it for the past year and a half however in the past two weeks there has been noticeable battery drain. Not sure what is going on but if it doesn’t get fixed soon I may have to look into getting the 15 this fall

I also have one. I’m personally just going to get a battery replacement since the battery health is at 78% and I’d advise you to do the same! They obviously don’t sell a Mini anymore and it’s still more than fast enough

Lol it's updates... More updates makes battery drain faster on previous models even though the battery size are same.

The 13 and 14 get a brighter display and that would have been nice that it was brighter on day one… I hated the notch at first coming from an iPhone 8, but my 12 has been a great. Lens flare in photos is an issue though. My battery health is at 86% and I’ve had it for 2 years 3 months.

As an iPhone 12 user since the time it came out, I’ve noticed that the display was far better than the iPhone XR. Managing screen brightness when outside isn’t that good, but it’s just good to a certain level that just generally you can see the screen. Camera quality is perfect from my perspective for the most part since every time photos are taken. Compared to the iPhone XR, it just seemed great in detail both in capturing good audio and video. The ability for it to autofocus is great. The sapphire glass just makes the device look nice and durable (at an extent). It’s really comfortable to handle, especially if a slim, thin, and gripped case is put onto the device. All in all, the battery life of the device is great, especially if iOS 16 or later isn’t installed to make me use the phone with that type of software to make me get my iPhone prone to getting damaged battery.

@@JediWebSurf it’s just that although the capacity of the software is at a small size and brings in new features, compared to iOS 15.6 and iOS 15.7, battery drainage is far quicker and iOS 16 [so far] tends to increase the temperature of the device that is in use. This is why before I could switch to an Apple device (or even just update my device’s software), I would first listen to reviews and see how their performances affect a certain device. Update: if the device can run on iOS 16.4.1, then all is good.

The iPhone 12 mini is a great phone with a very good camera. That said, it's heavy compared to the iPhone SE 2016 and I don't use cameras often. I'll be moving my sim card back to the iPhone SE when the Mini 12 auto unlocks next month.

I literally got my brand new red 128g 12 two weeks ago on boost mobile for only $250 per my upgrade. My first iPhone in 10 years. Love it so far. BATTERY TRICK no one is talking about: Take it off 5G! I noticed sup par battery life the first couple of days I was using it until I decided to “downgrade” to LTE. I have not noticed any difference in casual internet performance. I really like this phone and agree right now it is a huge value, especially if you get a great deal on a new one. Great video btw. i picked up my 12 on oktober 2022 i switched from huawei p 30 . my last iphone was iphone 3g :) and i am very happy with that . since than i bought me a used apple watch series 4 and new airpods pro 2. generation and i am very very happy with my setup now apple products work so good together and on the used market here in germany you can pick up very good deals

Every thing you have mentioned is correct except the battery life I have been using iPhone 12 for last two years and to be honest You won’t be able to get even 7 hours of screen on time with a decent usage. Also, the device heats up a lot when you are gaming and when you’re using the camera, even for like a normal usage.

Besides the iPhone 3GS, every other iPhone I've owned has been an even number (4S, 6S, 8, 12, 14 pro max) The 12 is definitely up there as the phone I enjoyed the most, a close second would be the 8 which lasted me almost 4 years. The 12 felt like a great leap forward. Loving the 14 pro max but I still have a 12 for work and I don't feel like I'm downgrading much whenever I'm on it. Skipping an iPhone every other year seems to work well because there's usually a noticeable improvement with the new device.

Battery life/health alone 12 series beats my 14 series. My 12 pro max right now is 90% battery health (bought 2020) and my 14 pro max is 87% battery health (bought 2022) I use them both everyday. Same amount of screen and charge time. Always have them on me. I don't know why the battery health is so bad with the 14 though.

Just got a brand new iPhone 12 Pro that’s still eligible for AppleCare and has 100% battery capacity. This iPhone has been great and gets me 8hrs SOT. This is my second one and plan on keeping this for a few more years.
