Years ago I had a roommate that was from Ireland. He lived here in the U.S. for a work assignment over the summer. When I heard that he'd never fired a gun, I got ahold of a friend that had a Desert Eagle and several other guns, like a Winchester lever action rifle, some kind of semi-auto Uzi, etc, so he could get the full Hollywood experience, lol. Imagine that this guy's first and possibly only pistol shooting experience is in .50 AE. Anyway, he said it was the highlight of his trip.

My father, Alfred J Thompson, was actually the guy who designed the original prototype of the Desert Eagle. He was a mechanical engineer, an avid skeet shooter, president of the Minnetonka Game and Fish Club, and ironically had never been much of a pistol shooter. The only pistol he ever owned was a .22 revolver. Three guys from a startup called "Magnum Research" were searching for a company to design their concept of a magnum caliber semi-auto pistol with interchangeable barrels. My dad was working at a company called "Mehl Engineering" and got the assignment even though he had never designed a gun before. His experience was designing things like Toro riding lawnmowers, a Tonka Toy truck, Litton Microwaves, etc. When the prototype was eventually made, Don Mehl test fired the .357 into a log in their office. My dad brought it home to show my mom and I. I still have some photos of my dad holding it and some pre-launch brochures of the prototype being called just the "Eagle". They originally thought about calling it the "American Eagle" and it wasn't until they decided to have it manufactured in Israel by IMI that the name was changed to "Desert Eagle". My father had been told by the owners of Magnum Research that he would be listed on the original patents as the designer and that he would be given a gun from the first production run - neither of which ever happened. It's disappointing that he never received any credit from Magnum Research for the original design of such a unique and iconic pistol.

I just wanted to get his part of the history of the Desert Eagle out into the internet. I'm proud of what he accomplished. He was a good man and a good father.

5:05 Yesn't. It was the most powerful _commercially available_ pistol cartridge back then, but the .454 Casull already existed as a Wildcat cartridge for around 13 years (1958 was when it was made, Dirty Harry came out in 1971, and the first factory made gun to use .454 was a Freedom Arms revolver that came out in 1983), with only a few people making custom revolvers for it.

Mentioning that the Deagle has a locking bolt made me think that it might be a good idea to make a video explaining the difference between different gun mechanisms. I'm still not clear on the difference between delayed blowback and a locking bolt for instance, might be an interesting video!
@CallanElliott
@CallanElliott 2 жыл бұрын
Delayed blowback has lock-up, so it has a locking bolt, simple blowback doesn't. Part of the point of delayed blowback is that you get to have the mechanical simplicity of full lock-up without having to get into the complexities of gas or recoil operation.

I really wanted a polished chrome one in .50AE and eventually sold my DE and have been himming and hawing on whether or not I want to actually get another one. Amazing firearm. Not a tack driver per say but more accurate out of box than %95 of other firearms I've owned. Also pretty hard to beat the ammo price of a TT33. I've got big hands though so the DE always felt more natural than any other handgun I've owned. Just my $0.02

Ah, those '90s memories. Back in the day around my circle (ie. poor, junior enlisted Marines), the DE was the coolest gun everybody wanted to own, but no one actually wanted to pay for it. I had the privilege of shooting the .44 version over at the Camp Johnson A-1 pistol range. They opened the range on the weekends for recreational shooting, so I got to see and shoot a lot of different guns. The .44 DE was one of them. It was fun, but the gun was not very liable with the ammo, mostly WWB, that was on hand. I was much more impressed with this one CWO's Anaconda and another Ruger Redhawk that one of my Gunny's had. Of course, I couldn't afford those guns either.

Fun Video, but a safety advice if I may: If you swing the Revolver cylinder close with a cowboying jab of the wrist, like you did in the Intro (Minute 0:44) and later in the Video (Minute 13:28). Specially with a Full cylinder. You could bend your cylinder crane and damage your gun by ruining the timing and headspace/cylinder gab. So guys: Don’t do it, lock the cylinder in the frame by pushing it with your support hand in, not by inertia. But enough "safety & longevity" tips: Great musical score and visuals with the mustache and Hawaii-Shirts, it was excellent entertainment!

Although seen as highly impractical I've always really wanted one but what I want more than one of them..... just because it's more practical, and in one of my favorite frame platform and more obtainable since I heard they started making them again not too long ago.... is the Coonan compact 357. Still packs a punch and looks like a 1911. Not a deagle but probably just as cool even if it doesn't pack as much of a punch as the .50 . I don't know I've always just really realy liked the 1911 look.

@highlander31527
@highlander31527 2 жыл бұрын
He missed one of the best parts. He can just swap the barrels between his guns. The .50AE uses a rebated rim that is identical in size to the .44. The round .50AE was created with just that in mind. The bolt is engineered to handle .50 or .44, or, way back when I bought mine, .440 Cor Bon, a nasty .44 magnum bullet in a necked down .50AE case that moved a 240 grain bullet at 1800 fps compared to the 1300 fps of the standard .44 mag. It was only the .357 that required a new bolt installed. The others just required a different barrel and magazine. He did not mention the polygonal barrel rifling. It's rather unique in firearms too. I spent years testing with different revolvers chambered in .44mag, and the DE consistently gets better accuracy, control, and around a hundred fps faster muzzle velocity with the exact same loads versus revolvers. I blame cylinder gap. The DE does NOT like light loads shot through. Surefire jams. In that respect, revolvers do come out on top.

The .44 we used was a beast. We had to buy 3 types of ammo before she would fire reliably. In the end we were using, and I kid you not, silver bullets, because they were the only ones we had local with high enough grains to reliably cycle and not jam. The .357 we had was a bit better, as there was a better selection of ammo available at the time.

@@henryturnerjr3857 Occasionally I carry my BFR 500 Magnum with a 7.5" barrel and a scope. IIRC it's 6lbs whereas the desert Eagles are only 5ish pounds. I have a drop holster and a gunfighter belt for the BFR, its quite comfy actually though I need to find a better thigh lanyard. A good dedicated belt rides high on the weak side hip and low on the gun side hip, which distributes the weight well. Desert eagle in a shoulder holster with two mags opposite side to balance the weight is more comfortable and less intrusive than any IWB or OWB holster for a practical sized gun, Id highly recommend trying a shoulder holster for whatever youre carrying, especially in winter.

Back in the dark ages of the 1980s I was irresponsibly drinking with friends at a bar we worked at and after we closed we went out to this guy's house out in the countryside who made his own wine. We continued drinking of course. A buddy of mine had a .44 Ruger Blackhawk and the dude who made wine had a .45 1911. This was before people thought about ear protection so I took one in each paw and began firing the way you did one after another at a sapling out in the snow, of course completely missing it. What I didn't know is the two of them were standing behind me with their hands over their ears laughing their asses off. That and loud rock and roll has probably reduced my hearing by about 50%. A small price to pay for a bit of fun in America.

I have that exact Desert Eagle in .50ae with the ported front. It's very manageable recoil and one handing it is totally fine, albeit the gun is heavy so the time to aim unless your built like a tank and have a steady arm and hands is rough. The problem I have with these guns is the availability and pricing of the ammo.

Plus one Auto mag. A couple LAR Grizzlies. 45 3 coonan's .357's. The only problem desert eagle I had was a L5 a few year's back. Pretty unreliable. Plus it blew out the ribs to the muzzle brake. @glenpope4955
@glenpope4955 2 жыл бұрын
Eh both lose velocity and energy. Although different reasons for both, the revolver as you said loses it through the gap, and the D Eagle loses some from the fact that it is gas operated. Now if we want to get technical about it yes the revolver is higher up on the loss scale but truth be told what ever you shoot won't notice the difference.
@soridarravencroft813
@soridarravencroft813 2 жыл бұрын
@@glenpope4955 Also there is the fact that the revolver 's loss is right out the gate, while the deagle's is at the end of the barrel, thus gaining (just about) the most energy possible before the bleed off.

Great video👍🏼 It felt all too familiar. I think we may have similar habits. Anyway, for anyone still wondering about the .357 eagle, it has the recoil of a .22 revolver because of the extreme mass of the frame. The weight is almost exactly the same as the .50AE. This also helps with recoil of the .50AE and I would consider it’s recoil (uncompensated) to be less than a .44 magnum ruger redhawk. Don’t get me wrong, it will loosen your grip after a couple mags, but they don’t have insane amounts of recoil like everyone thinks. Mostly, they are hard to get a good holding grip on. The grips are massive and (as previously noted) they do have a good bit of heft. Props on the duel wielding👍🏼 (That’s an experience all of its own) From one sexy KZbin motherlover to another, keep up the good work.
