Have you tried Permatex Aviation Gasket maker or Permatex High Tack Adhesive. I found those very effective as alternatives to 3M 847 and are readely available for a lot less money at least, in my necks of the wood. Regards !

I have this exact engine. I wish I would have discovered you before I did my impellor 3 times. I only replaced the impeller and key and didn't take the bottom plate off. Still not pumping water after 3 installs. I was going to do the thermostat next, but, I should order a complete water pump kit and start all over. I love your video and your thoroughness.

Been trying to trouble shoot no coolant flow on a '73 50hp for 2 years now, changing thermostat and water pump didn't help, no evidence of any blockages in the powerhead. Gonna take it down like you did here and check everything again. This is an excellent video.

Another great video. Man I have to get after the water pump on my 15 horse Johnson I am very apprehensive about it. You have to have the right tools for the job🤤

If you are the least mechanically inclined, you will breeze through the process. As tools go, you really only need a few standard-sized wrenches to get the lower unit loose and a screw driver to get the shift rod loose from the connector (depending on your motor year) and to work on the water pump holding srews. Of course, reviewing Brandon's great video series on rebuilding a 9.9/15 hp OMC s a must.

I have a 30 and a 50 from that era and good luck finding a prestolite trim pump or even parts when they go bad, ended up using a liner actuator and making a stainless steel bracket, good motors though havn't had many issues

Very educational video as usual.I have tried to get the cover off of a 30hp for thermostat and it appears cover had a newer gasket and after removing bolts that thing is stuck fast.Not sure if the wrong type of adhesive was used?Tried Lot of tlc without wanting to damage it prying off etc but gave up.Only one center bolt snapped off in head.Used helicons to fix that anyway.

I've used a thin bead of black RTV under that water pump wear plate with great success ! Regards.

So do I, or did, until the tube dried up. Now its just 3M 847

@@BrandonsGarage Had the same issue until I started feeding a bit of petroleum jelly up the tube's nozzle after use. Perfectly seals out air and insures fresh product after expelling a pea-sized blob of jelly next time around. The trick also works with cartridges of glue, sealants etc. Regards !

Hi Brandon, that’s for your very informative video which is going to help me this week. I was wondering if you have conducted maintenance/recorded on the tilt system for the same model? When I raise the tilt the outboard slowly lowers back down. I’m assuming it needs the oil to be topped up or a new o ring?

Did the same thing on my 81 35 hp(not the same thermostat) but the cylinder head cover was so outa wack, meaning not flat that it was a failure just waiting to happen. As it happened , the head was warped on both sides. Clean the head cover , clean the gasket surfaces to be flat so you good gasket sealing surfaces. OH! And pls torque in the proper sequence and in-lbs provided by the manufacturer

really enjoy your Johnson Evinrude videos. They're the best. Any advice on troubleshooting the power trim & tilt guage. No movement on the guage, trim & tilt works great..Haven't found much on testing the sending unit at the motor.

Dang, my 15hp thermostat is at the bottom. I've been dying to see how it can be removed based on Leroysrambling instructions. Sounds like a 5 hand task due to the cowling.

Indicator hose ? Around here we call it a Tell - Tail or pee tube ! Lol. Not one of OMC’s better designs for a thermostat, dealerships must have complained about not enough book time to charge the customer ! Lol. The only indication of heat was on the outside except for the temp gauge , the thermostat can be explained by age and location . Went over to a friends and found 2 - 40hp s.s. ( 15” ) motors and 1- 20” but it had the conversion adapter but no 25” , must be an area thing !

Maybe climate comes into play? Many old boats don't last. Sun rots the fiberglass then the wood. Just none around. Could also be because of the fewer lakes and water-ways too. Ive seen a short shaft with a long conversion on a merc once, always thought it was kind of funny.

Turns out that I waited to do the impeller again. Instead, I went ahead and replaced the thermostat and now she's pissin' like never before. Now my tranny doesn't go into gear. I'm sure it's something small I overlooked. I'll take the starter off and check that area where the shift rod comes up first. I hope I didn't forget the O ring on the spline.

Great videos! I’ve started working on an 84 Evinrude 50 Hp. You videos have been extremely helpful. I haven’t gone through all of your videos yet. Could you let me know what the loctite is you’re using as a sealing compound? I’ve tried to find the Johnson/evinrude sealing compound you mentioned in the first video I watched and couldn’t find it available. Then I realized the video was from 5 years ago. 😁

I have a 1984 Evanrude Super40. I believe it is identical to the 84 Norsemen. Sold to another part of the world and name something different. Is it possible to take a electric start system from a 84 Evan rude and adapted over to the 84 super40. My problem is that you damn near have to be the Incredible Hulk to pull start this motor and if you're not paying attention it will pull you right back into it. So I'm hope is that I can take the electric start setup off of the 84 Evinrude 40 and it will fit onto the 1984 Evan rude super 40. Thankyou. 🙏🙏
