In this video I show how to remove a lower unit with a frozen and broken bolt and then how to replace the water pump. I sped up quite a bit of the video due it takes quite a bit of time to clean and tap corroded bolt holes.

This video is 2 years old and still gold. Just did the same thing to a 1975 Johnson 6hp. Extremely difficult to break the bolt loose on the shift shaft. Such tight spaces. Used the same "made in China" kit from Amazon as you did. I sure hope it pumps because I'm not looking forward to doing this again. Went back together much easier than the process of taking it apart. Greased everything well just in case I'm still the owner that has to do it again. Thanks Much For Your Video!!

Thanks for your great knowledge! I'm new at outboard motors... It took me a few times to get it right on a 69 Johnson 6 hp. Broke the roll pin twice and made other mistakes... It takes a bit of finesse.Thanks!

No mention of the roll pin ? It can be a tricky part of-the operation for the unwary or newbie. Good video, clearly explained without irritating dramatics.

Thanks for making and sharing your video, I just bought this same outboard, pretty sure an impeller change is next on the list. Have bookmarked your video for near future reference. Great job !

Why did you decide the old impeller housing was toast? Was it scored up or something?

Hey Ted! Great video. I need to replace the copper water tube in mine. Is that something that could be done without removing the power head?

That I'm not sure but with most outboards you do.

I got this motor from my dad and it has two bolts broken off in it. Will it be okay if I drill them out and tap it?
@tedsmarinerepair89562 ай бұрын
I would give it a try.

How much pipes are in the tail? I Just have one. Put a new impeller in it ( same motor ) But still dont have any cooling. Took the thermostat out also, but dont get any water in the motor
@tedsmarinerepair8956 Жыл бұрын
It sounds like the impeller key is missing. I would check that first. You also need to ensure the water tube is lined up with the water pump when you install the lower unit

Will this same procedure be for a 1968 Evinrude 6hp motor ?
@tedsmarinerepair89562 ай бұрын
Not Sure that's a wee bit older

You should have just used the original tiny “T” that secures the impeller to the driveshaft. They never wear out, & the chinese one didn’t really fit. There should have been a roll pin near the top of the drive shaft, just below the splines. You cannot remove the water pump housing, or the impeller with that pin in place. Maybe your was missing because some hammfisted DIYer previously didn’t replace it. It’s there to retain the 6 pieces, (cup, bushing, spring & seals) that make up the lower crankshaft seal. Look up inside the housing, you so see a slot. That pin has to align with the slot when re-assembling. Yo all Logan, have to rotate the flywheel a bit to line it up. Many Los will have that pin, & if they don’t line it up, they will NEVER get the lower unit to slide up into place. Quicker than typing, for a good exp,a nation of what that pin does, Google this, & watch the video. Johnson Evinrude 6 HP Lower Removal and Seal Explanation

I was told you need to line up the roll pin that is up by the power head and don't just pull that rod right down or you will bend the pin and cause some damage ?????
@edwardhill6945 Жыл бұрын
Correct. He didn’t show the pin, or quite probaly it was missing, because a previous ham fisted DIYer ruined it & didn’t replace it.x Google this for a very good explanation from Brandon’s Garage, of what that pin does. Johnson Evinrude 6 HP Lower Removal and Seal Explanation

How did the chinese impeller kit hold up? I am looking at doing an impeller also on my 78 and may get the kit instead of just a replacement impeller. Thanks
@tedsmarinerepair89562 жыл бұрын
So far so good, only been part of the season but it hasn't failed.
@edwardhill6945 Жыл бұрын
If your housing is in good shape, & the bottom SS plate is not all scored up, just buy the impeller. Buy Sierra or OMC, any Bombardier dealer can order one for you for about $15. They’re better than Amazon or eBay Chinese junk. The little “T” doesn’t wear out, nor do most of the other parts.

And what's with the roll pin at the top of the shaft that holds tension on the spring loaded crankcase seal ? Leeroy would freak !
@bubhunt420mfr17 күн бұрын
Teach me something so I watched this video that pin wasn’t mentioned unless I missed it But it’s broke now 😂 so think that b replace with a small finish nail? And if so how I get to what he hooks to to make sure it’s right

The impeller is taller but it is also a much small diameter.

If it's the same aftermarket kit it will pump the same volume just looks different. The housing will be very different looking from the original as well.
@ship317 Жыл бұрын
Newbie question... how did you trouble shoot the pump to determine it was no good?
@tedsmarinerepair8956 Жыл бұрын
If the tell tale water stream stops. But in general changing the water pump impeller should be done every 2-3 years so it doesn't fail

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Thank you!
@edwardhill6945 Жыл бұрын
Ted is correct, just change them every few years, 2-3 if you operate in cold water, (the vanes are stiffer & fail sooner), or 5 years in warmer waters. If you picked a motor up, & the previous owner has no idea when it was changed, DO IT. These earlier motors, (68-76, or maybe later), don’t have a tell tale pee stream. You only see some water/mist coming out of the exhaust relief hole, just be,on the powerhead. If you Google Leroy’s Ramblings, there is a description of drilling & tapping to install a pee tube.

I have a 6hp motor imo they’re useless they don’t go much faster than a 150 lb elec motor
@tedsmarinerepair89567 күн бұрын
@jasonnester9514 your electric conversion of a 150 lb thrust would equate to less than 3hp. So if your hp does not perform it may have an issue or to big of a prop. There should be a major power increase to a 6hp outboard.
