@@BrandonsGarage Here's another question for you. I didn't see you replace the thermostats in this video while you had the head pulled. Was it a matter of "if it isn't broke don't fix it," or was it not in the customer's budget? I have a '95 88spl and I'm considering pulling the head to replace the powerhead gasket. It seems to be leaking and leaving a mess on the lower engine cover. Would it be good preventative maintenance to replace thermostats at that time? I don't know how reliable those thermostats are, and with your experience I figure you'd be able to tell me if they are a common failure point. The motor has only ever run in fresh water.
@BrandonsGarage8 ай бұрын
@@JavaJon3D if you're going to pull the powerhead, it's a good idea to replace them. I didn't do it here because the customer had already done it.

I love it when they bark to life. I’m putting a 4 horse Johnson (‘74) together that was submerged and full of sand, pistons were stuck, and lots of corrosion on everything. I hunted down and bought all the parts I need (took a while). Everything is cleaned up and waiting for Spring warmth to continue.

My first boat had a 1985 V4 90 and it was the first time I ever looked at an outboard engine. Mine had a whole bunch of fuel hoses that were leaking and it was “fun” job figuring that out.

Couldn't imagine pulling the power head off and not putting a gasket back on hahah, geez. I fix the odd boat here and there and the sticky timing tree (is that what's it's called?) happens on 90% of the engines I get. I also had to change a power head one time and I learned how to do it from one of you're videos. Thanks a ton for doing these Brandon.

That motor fires better than the one with the o/s piston. I also have a fair amount of scoring on the start board bank and hit 120 psi but loss abt 3mph on the top end with inefficient combustion rough idle cuz of the excessive friction @ the damage wall oil coating.

Could I drill and tap into the outer cover in the location that this motor has its tell-tale? Could I possibly swap covers from a different year motor with it already installed?

Enjoy your troubleshooting. I’m curious why you steer towards the power pack before checking coils. It is more likely that power packs go first? Thanks for sharing
@BrandonsGarage8 ай бұрын
Well, they usually don't fail; They just leak and send sparks elsewhere. Coils usually improve running/idling, but 99 times out of 100, a no spark isn't the coils.

Where are you located? I’d like to pick your brain for a second I’m stumped. I have a newly (November last year took it out once and then today) aquired 1986 Johnson 90hp on a VIP Fish and Ski. I changed plugs, drained old gas added new, changed lower unit gear oil. I took it out today for first run of the season and it fired up, and idled fine. We spent 4-5 hours on the lake. Then when it’s time to go dock and load onto trailer it wants to die as soon as you put in forwards or reverse gear. It will fire right up with the choke lever and will idle after you slowly lower lever. But as soon as you move throttle handle forward or reverse it dies. It did the same thing last November when we first got the boat. It’s weird it seems to not do it at the start of the day but at the end it does it every time. I know hardly anything about outboards so thanks in advance. 1986 Johnson 90hp Model # J90TLCDC
