After watching your videos and buying my 1st brand new used boat I mustered the courage to attempt my own water pump repair on a '93 evinrude 90hp. Removed the lower and old pump which looked still very good. Put new one back on anyway of course and reassembled but no joy. IT WOULDN'T PUMP A DROP! So back off it came, checked everything and even recruited the wife just to make sure the copper tube aligned correctly. Nothing can go wrong right? Wrong still no water so being frustrated to no ends I pulled it again and just put the old one back on. Again no luck...almost in tears literally I threw my hands up and just went to bed. HINT TO OTHERS: Make sure your muffs/flusher water supply is enough to supply the pump. Thats right my supply water hose was kinked with a garbage can sitting on top so I didn't notice it. Glad to say I woke up and thought about just checking with another water hose and it worked. Sometimes the dumbest things happen to me but I ain't the brightest bulb either lol

Oh! That happened to me in one of my videos. Water pump stopped pumping, couldn't figure out why, turn out as the engine steered itself from vibration, it cut the hose off. ...also, while testing one of the high dollar side scan trolling motor mounted sonar systems, the spinning propeller of the trolling motor cut through the $400 transducer wire. Sometimes you just need to walk away and give it time, and it comes to you later.

Same thing just happened to me. Put the muffs on, fired up the boat, wife parked on the hose, there went the impeller and pump. Killed them in about 30 seconds.

When I saw you break out the C-Clamp to add pressure to the lower unit oil screw...I knew unequivocally that you were my go to outboard guy. 🙏🏻

Use a popsicle stick to hold the key in place when you slide the impeller housing down. Right after you line it up, push the housing down and pull the stick out. Works every time.

I like the g clamp on the nut/ bolt to hold socket on tight.. ..It just shows U can learn new stuff every day

thanks mr brandon for another learning lesson as i was installing a new impellar on my 87 75hp rude but i put the impellar on the shaft first den struggled to get the housing over it-i have done this for 40+ yr-i tried ur way w the impellar inside the top and wala-easy peasy

Mine has no power tilt/trim but I would like to put it on it...getting tougher to manually lift it in my older age these days...The water pressure thing is a great idea too...I'll look into it for my engine as well. I have a question for you about applying the oil to the water pump, instead of using WD-40 or PB Blaster, couldn't you use something like Vaseline to help prevent the rubber from degrading?

Permatex Black Rubber Sealant (orange tube) might be a good option as well. Non-hardening and waterproof.

Beware. At 3:15 into this video the VRO Pump is magically removed within 1 Second. In reality this will take at least 30 to 45 minutes. In my case, only 2 of the 3 VRO Pump mounting screws were accessible. I had to remove the air intake covers all the way to the naked carb barrels. The VRO Pump had so many hoses attached, (that I did not want to remove) I ended up also removing the starter to get the visibility I needed to reattach the shift rod. Not as easy as the video would have you believe.

if it takes you that long to remove a vro you must be severely mentally handicapped. did you make sure to wear your helmet and water wings while taking the vro off?

According to the service manual, you don't need to take off the VRO pump. Brandon removed it to show what's happening. Just push the shift lever in toward the powerhead and it will release.

You don’t remove it, you unplug the oil pump senor and just mix your oil in your gas, problem solved

You said the tapered part for the water tube to slide into faces up. Yet it looked like you put the thinner side up with the tapered part closest to the pump?

I just replaced my water pump and when I opened up the thermostat housing I noticed my thermostat is a big plastic assembly not the metal one as in the video, is the metal version a newer style? Is one better than the other?

Well it's easy to figure out; the engine turns clockwise, so looking at the pump from the top its clockwise - but from underneath its counterclockwise.
