Great video , and great idea pining the cam bearings , there’s a lot of speculation out there why the Ls motor spins cam bearings but no solid reason why. I was just looking at a LS oiling system diagram, and I see the oil galley that feeds oil to the cam bearings runs along side the cam bearing journal and then to the mains ,, and not directly to the cam bearings like a Gen 1 sbc. say you have a high milage LS with loose main and rod bearings, it looks to me the oil would leak out the loose rods and mains and preventing it from building enough pressure to feed oil to the cam bearings ?? I could be wrong , what’s your opinion why they tear up cam bearings ??

If you continue to use the same fixtures for locating and drilling the holes in the block the fixture itself will start to wear out. I'd suggest the use of a hardened drill bushing inserted into your fixture to maintain and protect the original location, available from tool and die supply houses such as McMaster-Carr or Carr Lane Mfg. Nice idea to mechanically hold the bearing in place.

Mr Brand if you have the time, can you explain why LS engines have can bearing problems. I’m obviously not a machinist or engine builder. But the cam spins exactly half the speed of the crank with a lighter load. My experience with small block ford and chevy was you can rebuild the bottom end and not touch the cam bearings and everything will be fine. But I constantly hear about LS cam bearings. Thank you sir. I truly enjoy watching your channel.

Hi, Great information about the cam bearings,, I bought a gen3 5.3 ls motor and tore it down and the middle cam bearing just came uot with the cam and I had to use my dremel to cut the bearing in half ,, the journal looks ok and figured the bearing hadn't spun but the cam looks like its been heated ,, not scored just discolored at the center cam bearing .. I watched your video and thought this would be good insurance for the rebuild but this motor has knock sensors and look like its impossible to do # 2 and 4 bearings ,, am I right ? and would it be ok to do this just do the center bearing and #1 and 5?

@@BrandRacingEngines Thanks Mr Brand iam 60 yrs old and have owned a Automotive Repair shop for 37 yrs , i have a couple 64 Novas one pro street and the other is still stock chassis both have 434 SBC strokers and it blows me away back when i cruised out of high school a 400hp engine was the rage today if your not showing up with a 800 -1000 hp your not going very far... I have great respect for You and all the old school mentors i have been blessed to learn from , High school Auto shop and Machine shop were so much of what you put on your content which proves corp owned Race engine shops may not treat every engine like a person like you that said have been a fan of Damon since i learned he was running Matt's Big 9 set up combined with your skill set that BBC made 51 runs , Damon released a vid Thursday while pulling the engine hoping it did not Window the block or mess the crank up beyhond repair, would love to see you show the repairs or rebuild its to me so impressive that a small home town machine shop and engine builder has built a engine combo that is beating up on engines that cost 3-4 times a BBC . Again thank you for all the educational Vids on Engine machine processes. Sound like Damon will be sticking to replacing the Aluim Rods on a maint basis from now on..Fred

So as far as I know all V8 engines small block Big Blocks LS is and so on all use a cam bearing. Hawaiian small-displacement engines like 4 cylinders in overhead cam engine like a 2JZ Toyota they don't run cam bearings. Now I know at times the cam cap and the head need to be line hone but that's pretty rare. Normally you can just drop a set of cams in torque it down and you're all good then you have a steel cam on an aluminum head or sometimes a Billet aluminum cam on aluminum head no bearings but absolutely no scoring
@Pyle81

So let me be clear on this, You pre drill your holes and then install the bearings? Or do you drill the hole completely threw the bearing and then just use the washer to get the depth of the set screw so it doesn't go all the way threw? And where can I get one of these tools to align everything for the hole getting drilled threw the block? And the other tool for the end bearing??

Ive been asking others about doing this to save a OEM Aluminum Block engine. It seems that if you spin a cam bearing in a cast block that 99% of the time you can get away with replacing the bad bearings. But the Aluminum blocks are another story. Ive got a LY6 (6.0 Iron block) In my 09 Silverado 2500HD that we're 99% sure just spun the center cam bearing last week. And I can tell you this, Its not going back together with out getting this procedure done. And why wasn't GM doing this to start with??? Now I just need to find someone here in Northern Ohio that knows how to do this and has the gig/tool to do this.
