Chill, Brandford. It's 4/20. All music is cool. You don't have to call it "jazz", you can "call it anything." Music is always in the ear of the listener, be they fellow players or members of an audience.

Man, what a great video. Can you imagine being around in the 50's and 60's and catching a video of the greats shooting the shit backstage? Would have been incredible; we are living in a golden age of humanity even if most of us fail to see it.

What Branford is saying here is true just like when Barry Harris talks about bebop. You've got to break a few rules to keep inventing but if you break all of them, it'll be devolution rather evolution. It's about balance.

Doesn’t Indian music have a consistent use of the minor third and flat seventh? I’m sure they use a lot of other notes too

Fan of his music but he says you can't explain jazz then proceeds to try to explain jazz.

He’s not really attempting to solely explain jazz in strictly technical terms and that’s his whole underlying point here which you obviously missed.

Creating unnecessary additions to the "definition" of jazz, placing boundaries and subcategories on what is essentially just a musical language...I don't see the point in his rhetoric but I enjoy his playing. If jazz doesn't evolve then it is stagnant. If anything is stagnant it will petrify and die. Jazz has evolved significantly through the decades which has allowed it to proliferate through various cultures outside of the US. Let us remember that.

Armov (with all due respect)by no means is what Mr.Marsalis saying rhetoric. It is simply a clear concise distinction between art forms, if you choose to ignore the difference then you will miss out on the beauty that each have apart from each other. Have you ever found that a dish is always best where it’s indigenous to??? Branford is from where the art form called jazz originated and comes from a line of people who were true to the sound. How can a person truly innovate in an art they have not mastered🤔

@@ericsearcy2567 first of all, our music isn’t called jazz, and who’s to say where it started? They say New Orleans, but this is white folk’s language since they control the narrative. It’s really just black classical music and it could’ve started anywhere not just New Orleans.

yeah.. nothing new. Branford is just jealous. Miles was too. Surprising for such masterful musicians. I guess they have a bit hard time accepting the fact that their traditional instrument has been totally revolutionized by the guy from "the other camp". Sad, but true. Yet it's a bit comical seeing this. what matters is what the young great bass players that came after him, have to say here: Marcus Miller, Victor Bailey or Mat Garrison (naming few that come in mind) - all devoted Jaco's disciples. And they recognize it every chance they have/had (RIP Mr Bailey).

Are you FOR REAL? Miles jealous?? Those younger cats that you mentioned, who groomed them? Wasn't it Miles who groomed a whole lotta Cats who went on to be successful in their own right? You're about say Mingus and Jameson were jealous of Jaco. Crickey, all Jaco did was to play Bebop lines on Bass, a nice thing, but he got it from Parker, Coltrane, Miles etc. Miles jealous? What the heck!!!
@vbassone

@@zdogg8 what is then? To the common music listener , when you hear jazz , it's a bunch of notes being played creatively , lots of solos from instruments etc ..

@@da11king We are agreeing that improv is an important distinguishing element in jazz, maybe it's most important, most prominent. Branford is not in disagreement, he's just arguing that jazz is different from other improv rich music styles, and it has a distinctiveness above and beyond just improv:, i.e., the rhythmic structure and the blues scale element, (flat 3rds and flat sevenths against a major chord).

Exactly. He is a great side man, talking shit. Living under his brother's shadow. Jaco was an innovator. One of a kind. That defined bass direction FOREVER. This guy just played some nice "Jazz" runs on other peoples record... LOL. rather listen to Joshua Redman than this dude. Music with substance.. Jazz ain't dead, it just smells funny...FZ

@@FunkyDigo It's great that you quote Zappa. Zappa was wonderful. And it's great that you love Jaco. Jaco is a well deserved and beautiful musical icon and legend. But if you actually think Branford is only a "great side man," who is "living under his brother's shadow," only "played some nice 'jazz' runs" and hasn't made any "music with substance," you clearly have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. But, hey... It's the internet, right? Enjoy...
