I'm glad you don't give a crap about telling people to use a walkthrough and admit that JRPG random encounter rates were stupid.

Oh man, that random encounter rate is insane. Looks like a fun game but man, That is a killer

Another good vid!I love the colors and the enemy sprites in the Breath Of Fire games. I got stuck halfway through the 1st game and never went back but I keep meaning to. I’m at the end of Final Fantasy Legend so once I finally beat that one I should check these off my backlog.

I loved 2 much more than 1 One of my favorite part is the town building aspect.

I like this video, it was like sitting with a friend that you have not spoke in a while and he starts telling you about this game his playing. Very nice :)

I have beat 1 and 2..but not until I got them in the virtual console. Played it way back in the mid 90s and never beat it. I never beat 3. I owned it 4 times. The first 3 times was the same game. I'd trade it after frustration, and I got my same game back due to stuff I wrote in the manual.

I’ve literal owned this game for like ten years and never fired it up

I'm here to hear your opinions and thoughts on games Tony! Presentation is good, but I'm here for you first, editing a distant second. My first time playing BoF 1 and 2 was on the GBA too, I beat them and loved them. BoF 3 was incredible, I've had BoF 4 for so many years and never played it :P

Awesome review, Tony. I'm playing through the first BOF right now. I'm loving it and can't wait to get to this one. Thankfully, I don't mind grind fests!

I've had the first Breath of Fire since the late 90's and love the series. Great review Tony!

Breath of Fire 3 was my favorite and first one i played. I went back and eventually beat 1 and 2 as well. BoF4 was where i turned away from the series, didn't care for that one at all

BoF2 was ahead of its time in many ways. Back in the 90s, "Religion is bad" was very rare, especially for a Nintendo game (which usually censored anything religious.) This game got away with blood, death and sacrifice. I wonder if some of it was due to the bad localization: Maybe NoA just didn't care.

I think the biggest flaw that BoF1 has is the lack of description of items. I would collect items and then when I try to figure out what they are, there's no description that i could find. And the names are shortened so half of them don't make sense. I heard this was fixed on the GBA rerelease but the music isn't as good on that version so it's kinda of a trade off. Either way, this game looks way better. Eventually I'll get around to playing this series.

That's a great point. I think I still kind of knew what some stuff did because they were named similarly to the first game and because I was using a walkthrough. Didn't think of that.

I keep starting and stopping this one too. I could fire it up on Switch Online, but lord knows how long it will be up for. :-/ I think being able to play Breath of Fire II on either my GBA or SNES is going to be the best way for me to complete it. But then again, I also haven't played 1 or 4 yet either. :-D

When I hear retro reviewers complain about "grinding" I wonder why they play retro RPGs at all. Chrono trigger and Mario rpg created a new genre of "story driven power fantasy" which is cool and all but I prefer games that stick with the dragon quest model

I think the first game is better and you know why? Because in the first game in the battles characters jump out of their spots to attack the enemies. In this game they just stand in place and swing their weapons like those super old Final Fantasy games. Laaaaaazy Capcom.
