Wow, exactly exactly what I needed. I thought I’d never find a video on this because it was too specific.Your channel is amazing.

Thanks! I love watching these science type videos every now and then. Nice digging deeper into this hobby, and who better to learn from than a pencil fanatic who happens to be a scientist.

Excellent mini series on the science and care of mechanical pencils. Thank you so much. I love your channel. I’ve been binge watching for the last week or so. Looking forward to more.

When colouring in it is always better to lean over the top with your nose just above the end of the pencil and the tongue should be firmly pressed against the top lip. This will allow you to keep within the lines. All the best.

Thanks. There are plenty of Science Channels out there that do it well. I'm doing this to get away from something that I think about all day long. ;)

My Faber-Castell Grip Plus 0.7mm can advance the lead pointing upwards. As can my Pentel Graphgear 1000s in 0.9, 0.7 and 0.5mm, my Hex-o-matic, Rotring 800, Rotring Tikky, Zebra Tect 2way, Platinum ZeroShin, Uni Kuru Toga ... I can't find an example of a pencil that will not advance the lead upside-down ...

The Kura Toga Advance cannot do this weirdly, whereas the Kura Toga (Rolette) has no problem.

by the way, i want to recommend a pencil named minion(i believe it's a Korean word, not that yellow little guy lol) MP-101. It's a Korean brand, i'm not sure if it's available in your location. The Tip is metal, the sleeve is tight, and every thing that seem to be wear-able are made of brass(screw that connects the tip and body, clutch, etc). The balance is great, feel like writing a sturdy wood pencil if i remove the clip. And it provides a function that if you push the button half way, the lead will advance, but if you push the button hard, it will retract the lead. So i don't need to push the lead against anything if i want to retract the lead into the pencil.

+1 on quality of brass over plastic in pencils and on this video also KUDOS FOR The explanation. almost nobody likes plastic stuff anyway :P

Excellent tutorial. Could you now analyse the Orenz Nero clutch which is a 2 part design - like 2 horizontally extended letter 'Z's. I have had such trouble feeding the lead that I eventually gave up...the body of the pencil is now in my "pencil sadness museum" and the mechanism plastic tube, clutch etc is in my scientific research department trying the hell to work out how this thing works.

thank you for such a informative video! I'm a mechanical pencil enthusiast. I only buy pencil with brass clutch. But how long will a well made plastic clutch pencil last(assuming only leads of good quality are used)? I modified a vintage ball point pen(twist action) and managed to put the internals of a cheap double knock pencil(Made in Japan) into it. The result is an elegant looking twist action mechanical pencil, but the clutch is made of plastic. Since this is probably the only bottleneck may cause the pencil to die soon(and its hard to find other integrated pencil internals that fit this purpose. The only alternative i know is a cheap MUJI pencil with integrated internals, and the hidden clutch is made of brass, i used them to made series ballpoint-looking pencils but this model was discontinued by the manufacturer.)

Thank you for the video it was very informative. I want to ask a question from you regarding the knock of the mechanical pencil. I have a fabercastle grip 1345 and and it has a function which is called lead cushioning if im not mistaken. The thing that happens is that when i push the pencil on the paper and the lead cushions anferwards when I knock the pencil the first knock has much more resistance that the following knocks. Is this the same thing with all mechanical pencils?

If you feel much more comfortable sitting to the side (like the right side in most videos), then why not make the audio mono instead of stereo :D

Because I do this mostly for me. Which means I'm not that interested in fiddling with a bunch of settings. Nobody is forcing you to watch! :)

Oh sorry if I stated my opinion in a over-critical way :D I do not mean so and really like your reviews, just some feedback. And I don't really think you have to fiddle with a bunch of settings (which if it was, I wouldn't have suggested you to). In my case, I only need to tick a box when exporting and voila, mono-ed :D
