Grerat video, very comprehensive and informative. It's nice to see an update to the honorable mentions list as it's been a while since the last iteration was presented in its entirety. Were there any particular reasons the Pentel Twist Erase GT fell off the honorable mentions list? As I recall it was very feature rich, had a sturdy clip, and wrote comfortably. Also, I was wondering about the TWSBI Precision, I've noticed some customer reviews complain of frequent lead breakage within the housing and eraser issues, have you noticed anything similar in your time owning it? If you have the patience to answer one more question, what would you recommend as the best pocket safe pencil with an large/extendable eraser for extended writing and note taking sessions?
@ClutchSituation7 жыл бұрын
First off, you just got "always approve" status from such a spectacular comment. As a teacher, you better believe I have the patience to answer questions. ;P 1) It comes down to quality. I just don't feel like the Twist Erase GT can be recommended to people now that, in the same store, you can get a Sharp instead. I do think that the Twist Erase GT is one of the best economy pencils Pentel offers, but it is still an economy pencil with the same quality issues of anything that is more cheaply manufactured. 2) The Precision's big issue is that whenever you have more metal parts in a pencil, it increases the chance that the lead will break. Metal parts are more durable, but their tolerances are also smaller, resulting in more breakage. Metal clutches are great, but if you take apart a lot of pencils, you'll notice that there will be a small plastic/rubber piece that the lead feeds through as well. This is deliberate to provide a little "stretch" to improve lead breakage. 3) I can't answer that without hearing more about what you like. Thicker or thinner grip? Textured or untextured grip? Hard or soft grip? Do you love the TE GT? Because if you do, my subtle changing opinions shouldn't influence you.

Thanks so much for the thorough response. I see your point about the Twist Erase, completely understandable given your preferred personal criteria. Although, I was surprised to see it supplanted by the TUL as they are close in price, but it had yet to be seen in the honorable mentions list and your initial review of it years ago wasn't as enthusiastic. What do you think influenced your recent evaluation of it? As for your questions regarding the recommendation, I can't really say myself. I've only recently been turned onto the writing instrument hobby and was previously just using cheapo disposable pencils. As such, the most concrete factors I have for preference are the features rather than personal stylistic choices. I was looking to dip my feet into a more expensive purchase, but don't have the funds to try out a lot of them immediately. Though I suppose as it was for you, it will be a process of discovery to find my perfect set of traits in a pencil. Thankfully I have the fantastic resources you've provided to help everyone make an informed choice.

The fact that it came down in price. Biggest factor. I would recommend any of those Faber Castell's to you if you are focused on features.

OMG, I love the Pentel Quicker Clicker. That was my mechanical pencil of choice throughout HS / College. But a friend lost it when I let him borrow it temporarily. That teaches me a hard lesson. Don't let friends borrow your stuff. And keep a set of cheapo Ikea Pencils for loaners.

I was so glad to wake up to this video, I was starting to get withdrawals. I always wanted to try a multi pen, I have only used a very cheap one to get a feel for them. I love the look of the skillcraft, I'm going to have to go back and watch your review of it and maybe pick one up. The Lamy 2000 is another pencil that I have always wanted to try out, but it's a little pricy for me.

I have, the exact opposite experience with Faber Castell leads. They are always way harder and at least 1 hardness level lower, in coparison with other brands. For example, their 4B is closer to Pentel Ain stein 2B in terms of blackness, however still harder than 2B which translates, to a great lead for writing!!! That being said, I got their most underated mode, which is the Executive and to my suprise, even though it wasn't bad for writing, actually very comfortable, however, it performed way better on drawing!!! I have a ver unique and extensive way to test pencils, for both writing but even more for drawing and even though, it doesn't surpass the Pentel P207 on precsion, still I did way more beatiful and precise drawings with the Faber Castell Executive 0.7mm! When it comes to mechancal pencils, German made ones, perform better for drawing and Japanese are far better for writing.

I absolutely love the Pilot Mr Grip. Unfortunately I lost the two I had, (or they were liberated by someone with sticky fingers). When I went to purchase a third one, they were no longer carried by our town's office supply store so I have been trying other brands while continuing to pine for my Dr Grips

To correct the slippery grip on the TWSBI take use the rubber grip section from a Pentel R.S.V.P. ballpoint.

I'd rather buy a Lamy Safari fountain pen over a mechanical pencil. Metal grips are definitely my thing with mechanical pencils. Buy the way, rotring is selling their 600s on Amazon for 18-19$

A pencil to check out is the Pilot Automac. Jet Pens has it, but if you don't mind waiting, much lower $$$ on Amazon when ordering from Japan. A really nice tool that I think you will appreciate.

I love the TUL mechanical pencil. Best current economy pencil in my opinion. If you're interested in adding to your TUL collection, Office Max/Depot currently has limited edition colors. You can get them in packs of pink/purple and green/blue.

From what I've seen with the Metal Grip Orenz, I would not recommend that variant of the Orenz because the plastic is less thick and I believe the clutch is a lower quality as well.

We have a mechanical pencil in India called the Camlin KlickPro. It's somewhat cheaply constructed, made of fairly cheap plastic, has a small plastic eraser, and has a removable metal clip (not very flimsy). The lead offered is 0.5/0.7mm B, 60mm length (5 free leads supplied), which is fairly smooth. It is refillable, not disposable, and can last one to two years if cared for properly. Now it costs Rs 17 in India, which is around US $ 0.24 (25 cents!)... What is your opinion about such a pencil?
@ClutchSituation7 жыл бұрын
Sounds interesting. Shipping would likely kill it's value for someone in the States. Post your own review!

Clutch Situation Thanks for your response. What is the difference between a Kuru Toga standard pencil (plastic body) made in Japan and one made in China? I have one which says Made in China and works great (Cost Rs 125). The US import piece (starter pack) which is Japan made costs over Rs 1000. It is the very same pencil what I can see in the pictures at Amazon India.
@ClutchSituation7 жыл бұрын
I've had both and haven't noticed a difference. Fancier models are all made in Japan.

Faber TK seems to have some great looking fancy colors, but the design at my eyes looks like something missing, maybe its the part than looking it from a bit far all part looks like from different pencils puted all together hahaha and also having a exposed rubber makes me feel like it could easily get stained with hand pH or dirt, idk
