The most amazing singing of the 20th Century.
@nkteinert15 жыл бұрын
My vocal instructor told me to look her up, since I'm a soprano and, like Ms. Norman, I don't have that tiny tinkling soprano voice, either. (As my teacher would say, my voice will never be a tiny bird fart of a sound.) =) I've never heard her before tonight, and I'm in awe. She's beautiful and her voice is divine. If I only end up with half that talent, I will be content. She's amazing.

The only one who gives the aria the delicacy of a young girl. Perfect rendition. Many singers can't make the simple melody sparkle and give a dull performance with too much force.

Both Jessye Norman's version and Enya's version are beautiful in different ways. Miss Norman's diction is so crystal clear that you can easily understand every word. A great artiste.

How 30 people (at the time of writing this) can dislike this performance beggars belief! Rant over.. Wow, Miss Norman's performance here is exceptional and as near to perfection, as you will hear. Power, combined with wonderful control, diction and the most amazing technique make this recording exceptional. Please Lord, make the angelic host sound as good as this!!!

I've never ever heard any other rendition of this beautiful song than Joan Sutherland's as I grew up with it playing in my home. This one is also beautiful and very pure and her enunciation is easier to understand. I think it's ok to love more than one rendition of something so beautiful for different qualities.

+Stellamarie Kruize But Enya's? How has she got the cheek to attempt an operatic aria? She can't sing!!!
@Stellamarie1238 жыл бұрын
I come from a long line of music teachers, singers, dancers, dance teachers and fine artists etc. My personal feeling when it comes to any kind of art, is there is such a wide range of personal taste and ability that really, as long as someone likes it, it's art. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Like wine. It could be vinegar, but if someone calls it wine, then to them ... it is. Personally, the cheaper and sweeter the wine, the more I like it. ;-) I like amateur art because not everyone gets to that high point in their lives and if we all had to wait until then, there would be no art. If I didn't enjoy amateur art, I would have to quit my job as a ballet teacher because I would be so hard on my students, they would completely lose the love of it. Enya isn't my cup of tea, but apparently many others love her. Joan Sutherland is mine
@tessgregory9878 жыл бұрын
And Cecilia Bartoli is mine. And Jessye Norman. And Angela Brown etc etc etc but not, never, ever, Enya or people like Enya who attempt to sing operatic arias. It's an insult to the composer.
@Stellamarie1238 жыл бұрын
No problem. Each to his own. Maybe I just have a higher pain threshold especially since I have a son studying a Music degree and I have had to endure a lot more "pain" in this regard. He's also a fabulous tapper but while he was learning it was a nightmare to listen to. The composer is dead. He doesn't care who sings his stuff. I'm just happy when I hear people trying to sing instead of not singing because there are better voices than theirs.
@tessgregory9878 жыл бұрын
Crumbs! I have four musical children and I've suffered, too! Nobody can like exactly the same music as another person, but I really do think that operatic arias should be left to trained singers. Enya, indeed! It's as ludicrous as Nina Simone singing 'My Man's Gone Now' from Porgy and Bess, which obviously you will know is one of the REALLY difficult arias. But, nothing loath, Ms. Simone did indeed record a frightful version of this. OOOOOOH you listen to it and then listen to Angela Brown or Audra McDonald singing. You know what I mean. LOL

Until I discovered this song by Jessye and Elina - Joan Sutherland is the only other person I had heard sing it. I loved the music and Joan's trills but I couldn't understand the words. Now that I have heard Jessye, Elina and Enya - it is now my second favorite aria. Naturally Jessye singing Delilah's aria from Samson and Delilah is my favorite.

I just LOVE this aria and Ms Norman is sublime in this rendition and encapsulates all that the composer was trying to create. Her diction is perfect and every word can be clearly heard. I love Dame Joanie in this too, but you really need to have a libretto to follow the words if you don't want to just listen to the glorious sound she makes. But BOTH these incredible divas move me to tears when they sing this beautiful music. Brava Ms Norman.
