the pilot's armor reminds me of kicker's from transformers energon, which was probably my first foray into the mecha genre. 0:49 feels especially transformers.

You wouldn't be wrong to draw this comparison The Brave series (the franchise that this is parodying) was a decade spanning series that was loosely based on Transformers. The robots in the franchise are sentient and can turn into vehicles. A lot of the Brave series shows reuse old Transformers designs. There's always a bumblebee or prowl clone in there somewhere. If this sort of thing interests you I suggest giving one of the shows a shot. J-Decker's pretty good, Mightgaine's pretty good, GaoGaiGar is probably the best one and is also the most recent one finishing in 2001ish.
