Reasons why Coyote Peterson is one of the best KZbinrs out there: 1. Not clickbait at all 2. Very informational and interesting videos 3. Never swears no matter how bad he gets hurt, he didn't even swear when stung by the bullet ant. 4. You can tell he has great passion and loves what he's doing 5. I had 2 of them, great pets, feeding them isn't too expensive. They will eat just about anything. I fed mine mostly scrambled eggs with other supplements mixed in. Fortunately I have a local vet who is really good with these critters and he helped us keep them in great health even into old age. Biggest challenge is space. They need a lot of it. We actually converted a room in the house to a tegu house...

I just got my first Argentine Black and White tegu (Carlos) and he's awesome. He's already super chill and after the first week of having him, was totally comfortable with being handled. Just a got 125g tank for him but will be building an 8x4x4 enclosure in about a year probably depending on how fast he grows. Out of all the reptiles I own, I would have to say he's already become my favorite.

They don't even need to be raised from babies- my tegu's a former Florida feral (actually from the Homestead ag land breeding population, the one featured in this video) who lived wild for about a year before I adopted her. She's a total sweetheart- eats out of my hand, likes to be held, is super chill and seems to appreciate snuggling, and follows me around the house. She's never tried to bite me or any other human. I love how information Coyotes videos are, as a reptile enthusiast and owner I love this video. It makes me so upset, because I want an Argentinian tegu so bad and people who are releasing these animals cause the surrounding community to hate them, which this tegu or other invasive species don't deserve, they didn't want to be brought into an unfamiliar environment, but irresponsible people who don't research pets cause them to be hated and destroy the community.

its not that tegus are bad pets because that isnt the case. from what i read, they make wonderful household companions. the issue with owning these reptiles is the humans. the new pet owner buys the tegu and doesnt do their reading so when it ends up getting too big, they release it into the wild. funny thing is, they could just as easily give the reptile to a zoo or research group where the tegu could be properly cared for, taken off their hands, and one less invasive species in the wild.

Thank you so much for not releasing the animal back into the wild. Sometimes it takes a bigger/better heart to get rid of invasive species than it does to let them go. Don't get me started on cats... 'house' cats are so bad for the environment it's unbelievable.
@CoyotePeterson7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that... yes doing invasive animal episodes is tough because they do not belong in the environment...so we always make sure to find a place that will take the animals in without destroying them, ultimately they become educational ambassadors.
@acephantom9037 жыл бұрын
At least the tegu out competes the cats. One of the most popular explanations for why the tegu are here is the same as the burmese pythons: Hurricane Andrew leveled several warehouses filled with exotic animals for the pet trade. How many are there? We think more than there are pythons -- they were not as common in the early 90's so the number released was rather low but they have the ability to travel long distances and actively hunt for food and they can brumate which means the winter doesn't kill off good chunks of the population like with the pythons. Experts that I've listened to believe that the python population has leveled out because the winters are too rough on them and native predators are figuring out how to eat more babies -- everything eats snakes in south florida. The biggest problem with the tegu is just how much food they eat. A python will eat once every few weeks if it is lucky where as a tegu will eat an entire nest of eggs every couple days. One tegu can wipe out a whole generation of wading birds or alligators in a week. But nobody talks about tegu because they aren't "scary" like snakes.
@Davidjohnson-o6g7 жыл бұрын
Mitochondriac the animal was already in the wild i don't get why he didn't just let it go back we're it was he only held it for a few minutes
@TheHMinnow7 жыл бұрын
Samuel Martin it's because the Tegu is an invasive species. They don't belong in South Florida and are damaging the ecosystem, endangering the indigenous species. Yes, the lizard was already there and out in the wild, but it shouldn't be, and so they relocate it to research. It'd better then what some people do, which is kill invasive species because they are invasive. What they do is good for the ecosystem and I will not say they are doing wrong but is just rather saddening to think about.
@Davidjohnson-o6g7 жыл бұрын

Tegus actually make great pets if you're willing to take good care of them. They're more active than your regular lizards and incredibly smart. Like scaly dogs. They do require a good, abundant and balanced diet to grow properly, but they will eat just about anything. I wouldn't have them in a small apartment and they cannot be caged like other lizards. They're goofballs, though, very affectionate.

i disagree with that they arent good for pets. Maybe educate the people on why NOT TO RELEASE them into the wild.

Like large iguanas - it seems the key to good pet status is regular handling.
@oneyedthing6 жыл бұрын
Ever see the population of iguana's in South Florida? Like the iguana, they make good pets until people get tired of them and there is a point that no shelter wants to take them. Which will be put down by the shelter anyway. And owners are afraid to put them down so they release them instead. Tegu and Iguana's can live up to 2 decades, and there are a few owners committed to that. Why not ban it like they did with snakeheads
@mikemendez37786 жыл бұрын
Lavar's Balls Well its pretty much like a dog, but then again so many people don't take propercare of dogs or cats and still own them leading to a ridiculous number of them being put down every year.
@ryanmadaris69405 жыл бұрын
They aren't good pets unless the one buying them is an experienced reptile keeper. They get larger than most people think they will, and that's usually what leads to their release into the wild.

I live in FL, and I’ve heard about these guys. We also have an incredible amount of pythons and even boas down south. Most of our exotic wildlife is south of Martin county on the east coast. So Palm Beach county, Broward and Dade. The Everglades are definitely a site to see in your lifetime, all kinds of wild life down there like panthers, wild boar, alligators, crocs (rare), Ocelots (very rare), coral snakes, pythons, boas, rattlesnakes, water moccasins, all types of lizards and iguanas and of course great fishing on and off the coast (and in the glades) if you’re into that.

I have a red tegu that actually comes to me for some good scratches and a long nap on my lap. You see people who have a pet be it dog/cat/bird/reptiles/fish, you need to be a responsible owner. I have raised my tegu to be friendly to everyone since young and she’s 5 years old and I bring her to pet smart to the reptile area so she can test out some log homes. I let people come up to me and Mia my tegu and get to Understand that the outcome of there behavior is dependent on there fear and if they are scared they will defend themselves. When my tegu gets uncomfortable she looks for someone she knows or a place that makes her feel safe. She knows my smell and comes to me whenever she wants or when she’s uncomfortable with something. Can she inflict harm yes but so can anyone’s dogs and cats. Some pet dogs can even be more aggressive than a wild animal. It just depends on the owner of the pet. I’m saying this because I find it ashamed of the lack of knowledge some people have and for those people that are scared of everything and don’t respect life. We share this planet we are not alone and we shouldn’t push them away. We should respect and understand or neighbors and there will to live. And love our pets

It's common for people to kill invasive species, especially when they're large in numbers (I believe they kill many constrictors in the everglades whenever possible as to try and control the population since they don't belong)

I had a B&W Argentine Tegu. One of the best lizards I've owned. Got him when he was 14" and had him for 7 years and was about 4' long. He was basically a big puppy and needed attention all the time, followed me almost everywhere around the house and on walks outside and even slept on the end of my bed with me. Very awesome reptiles and are great as pets if raised right. I dont guarantee buying one more than 6 months old if you do plan to buy one. Purchasing a hatchling or small juvenile and taking good care of him will give you one of the best pets ever. I've had all sorts of Iguanas, Lizards and Monitors and the Black and White Argentine Tegu has to be my No. 2 favorite pet reptile, with the Savannah Monitor being No. 1.
