Brazil’s new president, Jair Bolsonaro, signed a temporary decree on Tuesday fulfilling a campaign promise to tackle the country’s epidemic of violence by making it easier for Brazilians to buy guns.
“I signed this decree, created by many upstanding people, so that at this first moment, upstanding citizens can have peace inside their homes,” Bolsonaro said at the signing ceremony in the country’s capital, Brasília.
Bolsonaro, a conservative former Army captain, was sworn in as president on Jan. 1 after sweeping to power last year on a hard-line law-and-order platform, pledging to reduce the countrys record murder rate and booming trade in illegal drugs that fuels it.
On the main highway leading into Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s Federal Highway Patrol or PRF say they’re confiscating record numbers of illegal guns and drugs. The officers patrolling the road seized 18 tons of drugs last year - a more than a 300-percent increase from the year before.
“It's a traditional route for drug traffickers - not just for drugs, but also heavy arms,” Alcino Galvao da Silva, Unit Leader of the Federal Highway Patrol, told VICE News. “Machine guns, bullets, marijuana, and cocaine… It has grown quite a bit, especially in Rio de Janeiro.”
“Johnny,” as he asked VICE News to call him, has been dealing drugs for the Third Command drug gang since he was 16 years-old. Now at 28 he manages all the drugs corners in the neighborhood and isn’t afraid to defend them by force.
“I can tell you that today I've got 35 homicides,” “Johnny” told VICE News. “Fear? We don't have fear. That's what we're here for. To kill and die. We'll die, but die fighting. It's our war motto: Die fighting.”
Bolsonaros plan to “give guns to good people,” and ramp up the military’s role by giving security forces more power to shoot and kill armed criminals isn’t getting the drug gangs to drop their guns. Third Command says their stockpilling weapons of war.
“He’s going to take the world into an urban war,” “Johnny” told VICE News. “Instead of us killing the Red Command we’re going to go after the guy who is in the police who listened to one of Bolsonaro's orders.”

I used to live in a favela in Rio de Janeiro. it's very impactful to see the gang members holding heavy weaponry, but, these gang members rarely step outside the favela. The favela doesn't produce guns, the favela doesn't produce drugs, the favela is a sympton. The favela is a scapegoat for something much bigger.

Not a big deal, the criminals tend not to kill civilians or police officers inside the favelas because they know if they do the police will most likelly invade the favela and that is not good for business... And also the police tend not to invade the favelas (They rather let other criminal factions do it, because it's easier to let the criminals kill themselves) Normally what happens is: A faction invade the territory of other faction, they kill themselves and some hours after the firefight stops the police/military forces steps in and get the ones left... (If you think about it it's understandable, I mean, you saw what those criminals have, if you step in recklessly you might end up dead)

@J WOO When the life of someone don't matter to you anymore, you don't need a reason to kill someone, they kill just like in GTA, because they don't care, it's just it. They can, and don't care. A bad day and you're in the bad place and bad time? it's over. Life is meaningless, this is why people in Brazil got Killed even when they got robbed and comply. Just because, they fucking can.
@User71956
@User71956 3 жыл бұрын
@@Balrov1 It's not so much "rules" but rather common sense. Killing a journalist or a cop brings attention and then the law (which is essentially just another gang down there) has to put on a show to demonstrate that they are still in charge which in turn affects business for the gangs in the favela.

I am Brazilian. Seeing Brazil through American eyes is very much different from reality somehow. For those who played MW2, it is the same feeling - you can catch a glimpse of Brazil as a far away violent drug empire, a distant reality. But when you live anywhere here, the sensation is different. You feel suffocated, you feel like there's no future, and that reality will someday swallow you whole...

It is a more complicated matter really, because we are speaking of Brazil here. The country also has very corrupt politiicans and a very corrupt police force. For instance, many of the guns apprehended or handed in with the anti-gun law were just handed over right to gangs in Brazil by the police themselves. In some cases the gangs have better weaponry than the police itself. Brazil is like a real-life GTA.

6:52 No. Bolsonaro made it easier Brazilians to OWN a gun, not to CARRY one. Gun laws are very strict here, and what here made was passing a executive decree giving "strict sense" in the current gun law why someone would need to own a gun. The current law says, if you want to own a gun you must: 1) 25 years or older 2) no criminal record 3) no criminal process 4) stable job 5) pass the physiological test; 7) know how to use a gun; and here's the decree catch 8) the necessity of the gun, approved by a Federal Police delegate, the decree give changed the subjective "necessity" to an objective one, buy giving basically everyone the "necessity" approval. Gun enthusiast were pissed after this decree, because it is too little, but they forgot the President simply dosen't have the power, Congress does, and guess who have the majority of the house? Not Bolsonaro party, the PSL, but their enemy PT, the former 13 years government party. We're a multiparty democracy, PSL can't run the government without a coalition, that garatied the majority of the house but maybe not all the allied votes to change controversial laws, some deputies will disobey their own party and maybe vote against Bolsonaro wishes, they have the old rival of PT, (the PSDB) in their coalition and they did everything to compare than to PT calling than from corrupt to communists, everyone is a socialist/communist to the PSL. So I can't wait MMA in our "C-SPAN" tv channel.

Finally an intelligent informed analysis of the Bolsonaro gun decree. I hope that the PSL can make a deal with some of the PT and PSDB to make a political deal on this gun matter so the Brazilian people will have the same gun rights that Americans have in our Bill of Rights.

Those are all high trust societies with civilized populations. Brazil has neither. Secondly in Italy they are about to loosen gun laws over there now too! Also Switzerland has extremely high gun ownership, exceeds 50%, but doesn’t have the same gun crime problems as the USA. Why? Could it because in Switzerland you are dealing with a homogenous civilized white population? Hmmm?

Just adding here, Brazil its a hell of a big country, the biggest country of south america, what they showed here its a tiny piece of Rio de Janeiro, Rio has lot of problems with it, but then são paulo, rio grande do sul, mato grosso, bahia, and a lot of other states are really chill, literally nothing compared to rio de janeiro, its surreal even for me to see those things that happens there.

The problem of Rio I know because I lived there two years, is that about 70% of the inhabitants use drugs, sporadically or continuously. It is the porter of the building, the nanny, the waiter, the bus driver, the millionaire, the middle class. There are a lot of people sustaining traffic. Where demand is huge the supply will appear.

5:09 Why is Rio so violent ? The right answer is: there's no proper education, there isn't any kind of assistance from the government to the poorest, so the only way of putting food on the table is by getting involved with the trafic. The solution is not increasing the penalty, but investing on education, health and culture.
