The Water level isn't new or uncommon it's used thru out the construction industry . In situations like Yaba a laser level wouldn't have been practical and a water level is much cheaper and takes no batteries . These shipwrights look rough and tumble but are very talented carpenters . It's been a pleasure watching the progress thanks !

Being in my seventies I really enjoy watching the senior builders working on boat! Has anyone else noticed that they are usually the ones laying out the boards for the cutting? That’s what having experience gives you.

It's amazing to watch this wooden boat rebuild that while using modern tools, is also using methods and techniques that are likely hundreds of years old. I'll bet that when you bought this boat you did not expect that you'd end up documenting traditional boat building techniques and broadcasting them to the world! In any case, I'm glad you did because its fascinating to watch!

um...the workmen...I am around these guys' age range and in no way, could I do the physical requirements that are needed. I am guessing that a few of these guys are in their 60's. I have had mixed emotions about this refit. It's really all about money. This story is just Act 1 not yet completed. There are at least 4 more Acts to start...and to finish. Each of the following Acts, I think, are going to be as mind-bending as getting rid of the rot. This is going to be a long ride folks. Buckle up!!!

I'm still in good shape BUT the last year of confinement is hitting hard, I lost my stamina, doing nothing but watching YT vids like this one. I'll have to do works out to regain strenght. Maybe you should do the same David !! These gentlemen never stopped so they presumably are in top shape. As for your other comment about the actual state of their boat and the rot, don't you believe they know ALL about it ?? No need to remind our young couple here the rest of the work coming. It sounds so negative. 🙄

@@marcryvon Thanks for your comments. Regarding the work that is coming for those two, they know what's ahead. They first had to...must... survive Act 1 of the play. We know Act 1 is named Removing All the Rot. No idea what Act 2 is going to be. Could be the engine, could be the electronics, or any number of things. By me just stating facts is not negative. It is reality. It only costs money. And in that shipyard, they look really busy and their knowledge and skill level is pretty remarkable. No laptops here!

I agree with you, but it is a bit sad to see that they are not taking care of their own health. We are now in the year 2021, and they are not using any protective gear, eye protection, hearing protection and sometimes the are climbing around in flip-flops.

The ancient Greek used Water Levels, we still use them today in heavy engineering, when we want to set components to gravity and the distances are too far to use a spirit level. The modern alternative is to use a theodolite, but the simplest ideas are always the best.

the "hose" is often used in the building industry ("in den bouw", as we call it in Flanders) ... It is only useful when the boat itself (the keel) is standing straight up, in an angle of 90 degrees. ... Keep up the fantastic work !!!

That hose trick is absolutely ingenious, and I wonder how far back it goes? Were ancient builders using stitched-together pig intestines filled with water? When I get my time machine I'll go back and find the first cat to use a hose in that way, and give him or her a bunch of gold. (I'll get the gold from the future where it's cheap.)

It's called a water level in English. Boatyards everywhere use them and in building construction they're precisely accurate over as long a distance as you have hose.

"windmill1965" That trick was used daily in house construction to level the footer and or the, slab. Then the laser came along and was easier to get the height correct in the middle of a floor. A common garden water hose was used most often.

@@Ra-zor its like using a level to build shelves in a trailer home while on a slope! i told them from the getgo to use laser levels and markers to make sure the whole frame stays where it was meant to be. i cannot imagine the torques against the frames to their planks. should have used hex bolts that ran through and were torqued! also- what is the moisture content of the wood? should have been taking massive tests and records,

A clear pipe full of water is the simplest very accurate level tool, truly international and used in so many industries. It's foolproof. The water in the pipe will always find it's level, no matter how long the pipe or where it is routed.

Love the RNLI T-shirt. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a charity in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is a 24/7 search and rescue lifeboat service run, where possible, by volunteers and funded by voluntary donations. It would be great to see more institions around the world, not just insurance based services.

The tarp looks nice an tight, but it needs a lot more attachment points. If the wind picks up, it will just rip it off. Use some long, narrow strips of planking to nail it to the hull instead of small blocks. And maybe roll the tarp one or to times around the strips of plank before you naiI it. I grew up in some windy islands in Norway, Lofoten. So I have seen what’s the wind is capable of doing.

Esa manguera es muy utilizada en la construcción de casas y es muy antigua, es vaso comunicante y actúa por gravedad, solo hay que tener la precaución de que no este pinchada, estrangulada o que alguien la pise, de este modo daría errores ya que es un nivel. Me gustaría que alguna vez puedas contestarme algunas de mis preguntas Ep.24, 28 y este, talvez le he escrito en algún otro. No me pierdo un Ep. ya que este arte se esta perdiendo y muy gratificante ver como trabajan en el Yaba!!!!

Tarp idea is👍🏻. Collect off cut scraps of wood for battens and screw on wherever possible to secure tarps.

Water levels have been around forever. They are awesome because you find level over very large distances only limited by the amount of tubing you have.

I should think that screws are more secure than nails, especially nowadays, having such good materials that don't rust so easily in seawater. I'd love to hear about this. All the best, guys!!!

The use of the tube only works if the hull is also level. Otherwise the plank alignments will not be the same. I hope a reference to the frames/decks/etc. was taken.

I have been following Tally Ho, Acorn to Arabella, Sail Cargo and various other projects for years and am amazed by the speed and seeming ease these guys are building at. Although I love the perfection and care displayed by Leo, Steve and Alix, I can sincerely appreciate the natural abilities of your team, The pipe level is really the oldest tool for leveling used and comes from the construction industry. Butting the planks before running the saw through the joint insures a perfect fit which is an ingenious method. Love your channel!

Seeing the size of those planks makes you wonder where all this wood is coming from. How old was the tree for that sheer plank? Was it rain forest sourced?

The wood is being sourced from a farm that specifically grows and harvests fast growth wood for these boat yards,
