What should you know about the Brazilian wandering spider, the world's deadliest, after it was recently found in a bunch of bananas in south London? Guinness World Records in 2010 named it as the world's most venomous spider. Its bite is apparently thirty times more deadly than that of the rattlesnake. Its scientific name is Phoneutria, the Greek for murderess. It gets its name from its habit of wandering across the jungle floor at night, while other spiders are in their lairs or on their webs. It is sometimes called the banana spider as it likes to hide in the plants during the day. They very rarely reach Britain, from their natural habitat in tropical Central and Southern America. Report by Jeremy Barnes.

Haha. I live in Brazil and when I was a kid I used to live in a island called Boipeba, in Bahia state. Several mornings I woke up with a wandering spider in the ceiling above. If u don't threaten them, they don't attack. Later, when I was like 16 yo, me and my friend found a 12 cm wandering spider in my grandpa farm while searching for spiders, scorpions and snakes. It was just huge.

What I've noticed about this species is that it only becomes aggressive in defence. It doesn't take much to become an annoyance to this species. When coming across this species it's best to avoid it or simply not bother it. I've seen a fair few people handle this species which can make them come across being docile. But being the #1 deadliest spider it's gave people the impression that it's out to get you.

By the way, in Brazil, so far, there have been 7000 reported Phoneutria accidents and only 10 deaths. Also, only about 2% of all bites are deemed serious enough to require antivenom. It doesn't kill in 2 hours (quickest I've see reported is 9hours and it was in an elderly person) end most serious accidents happen with children (since they are smaller)
@mariotime448
@mariotime448 3 жыл бұрын
There are no 10, but 15, 5 adults and and 10 children, most bites are mild because it occurs in the winter while in the summer is extremely rare, These spiders seem to produce a smaller amount during cold months (June to September) a minimum amount of 0.03 mg, an average of 0.44 mg and a maximum of 1.84 mg, during the summer months the maximum amount of individuals was 3.10 mg (October 26), 4 mg (November 3), 5 mg (November 4) and 8 mg (October 31), the fastest death been reported was 30 minutes in a 10-year-old boy, in another case a man had cardiorespiratory failure in 10 minutes (fortunately he survived), but the most bizarre case happened in São Paulo, the spider bit two children, one by one and both died in the same night, everything depends on the amount injected, of 1.84 mg, they inject around 0.4-0.7 mg, it is estimated that in the summer they can inject 3-5 mg.

@@pulguinha682 Yes, there are, for exemple, from 1925 to 1945 there were 415 cases, 400 required antivenom, I know a case of a healthy man who was the first to receive the antidote, he was bitten on his toe, he immediately had visual disturbances and difficulties walking and speaking, cramps, nasal hyper-secretion, salivation, profuse sweat, hypothermia and persistently accelerated heart, this case occurred in 1926, in fact, this spider has the potential to kill very quickly, if you are bitten in summer, but in winter the bites are more dangerous for children and the elderly, which is incredible, because the maximum amount it produces was 8 mg (and it often injects less than 8 mg, so as not to ''waste'' the venom), and it's still capable of causing all this.
@pulguinha682
@pulguinha682 3 жыл бұрын
@@mariotime448 I know nowadays cases seldom require antivenin and actually a lot of spider accidents in general are actually not spiders, simply misreporting (confirmed spider envenomation is much more rare and nearly never fatal) I also read that Phonrutria sp are capable of inflicting dry bites (without any venom) and do that in over a third of the cases
@mariotime448
@mariotime448 3 жыл бұрын
@@pulguinha682 Yes you're right, but in my opinion the most venomous isn't the Phoneutria, but the chilean recluse spider, it has only 4 mg of venom and a protein content around 50 to 100 micrograms, and even with this tiny amount they have severe envenomation rates higher than phoneutria and funnel webs.

Interestingly, Guiness World Records 2019 has named Atrax robustus the most venomous spider again. However, toxicity of Hadronyche formidabilis is as strong, if not possibly stronger, than the Sydney Funnel-web. At one point, Hadronyche infensa was thought to be worse still, but I believe that's not the case now.

Probably per volume, Because the Atrax/Hadronyche injects too much more venom than Phoneutria. A male Atrax can injects 176 mg, while a female Phoneutria injects Just 1.07 mg.

Good thing I'm allergic to bananas, cause that's a big NOPE from me! 🕷🍌☠ Although, I do wonder. You dont really hear of a bunch of deaths in Brazil by spiderbite. So, either they are keeping it underwraps for unsuspecting tourists, or Brazillians are spider whisperers...just kidding... They must have a respect for it so as to not actively look for it, do very good at pest control, and know how to spider proof their houses as best they can.(not sure how one would even begin to spiderproof though lol) I also have seen videos of them being very aggressive while in captivity. These spiders have large territories, as they do crawl across the jungle floor. So you have to imagine how cooped up and probably "hangry" they are. However, this is not to say that there have been videos of them being aggressive in other situations, like being caught in someone's house (wich is not it's natural habitat), and being just startled by being passed by on a trail, so...conclusion...don't mess with them...and if you come across one, back away slowly. Because, I can imagine one of these things actually running at you or jumping... And for real, who wants to die with a boner without being satisfied?!😂😂😂
