A few updates to the video: Pseudoscorpions *are* venomous - with venom coming from their pincer-like palps. However they cannot sting or bite us - they're beneficial predators of smaller mites and insects. As for the criticism of the Brown Recluse range map - take a look at the observations map on inaturalist here - the sightings line up surprisingly close: www.inaturalist.org/taxa/50181-Loxosceles-reclusa

What I did to help my severe irrational fear of bees and wasps was I started photographing them. Nothing fancy, just a digital camera and now mostly my cell phone. I started out far away but I'd then be able to be close to them and not bothering them and they didn't bother me. Also, looking through a lens helped as a sort of "barrier" like watching it on TV which I *know* is safe and can't hurt me. I found myself enjoying their little quirks, movements, and interactions. And as they went about their tiny short little lives running their little bee or wasp errands I found myself feeling less and less paralyzed with fear and they were surprisingly *entertaining!* Don't get me wrong, I've been doing this process for about 15+ years and I still get a little shiver if one gets too near my ears (the buzz noise) but I am no longer having meltdowns or anxiety over them at all. I hope this helps!💜

When I was little, I had a love for spiders. I drew pictures of them every week, and even held a few. The weird thing was that if I didn't expect a spider to crawl or jump on me, I would utterly freak out. I knew I had nothing to be afraid of, but it was a common response of mine. I wonder if that the main reason people fear spiders is because it is hard wired into our system, almost an instinct.
@Theotherpersona3585 жыл бұрын

I actually used to have a spider in my bed room At first I thought, “he is not the first one I’m just gonna kill it once he comes out of the corner.” but then I noticed that he never did, He stayed in that corner. The next day, I noticed that he made a web. And if I got close, he hides behind the closet. I used to look at the corner every couple hours and he was always there chilling and then after a while, he goes behind the closet. After couple days, I was able to get very close to his web and he wouldn’t go behind the closet, Sometimes I pass right by him and both of us wouldn’t even care. He knew his space and I knew mine. I used to speak to him about my day. He was a good listener. Several months have passed And he no longer shows himself. I assumed he died. But then he started coming out again. I still think it was his child, it had to be. I am not sure entirely but he looked a bit smaller than before. But he and the old spider shared the same style of living in my room so maybe they were in fact just one spider. But I gave it a new name anyways. The scariest moment was when I came one day and the spider looked huge. I decided to carefully take a closer look. The I discovered that it was actually two spiders fighting. I started getting worried, I thought “ if my roommate loses I would probably find out about it the hard way when the other spider leaves the web and hides some where else in the room planning for his next attack with my name on the top of his target list” The next day, the first thing I did after I woke up was turning my head towards the corner. I slowly got close to the web, and I saw a cocoon, next to it was a spider. I wasn’t sure but I thought he was my spider. I mean he was there, he didn’t disappear or flee when I was getting close to the web. And the one inside the cocoon was the intruder. I was relieved. unfortunately, several weeks after that, he stopped showing up. Until one day I saw a spider next the web, I was shocked. “After all this time, is how you want it to end?!, by me?!” With little bit of disbelief I grabbed a broom and went for it but Before I strike him I realized.... he was already dead “What was it?!, was it hunger?!, or perhaps it was simply his time. Did he knew?!, and If he did know, then why leaving the web?!. Is it possible that he wanted to see the blue sky one last time before he dies?!. Or maybe see it for the first time and see if it is really like how his mom/ dad described it to him. (That is if we assumed that the first spider actually died during the first disappearance.), What if this dead spider just another outsider how died before he gets to the web?!” There is no telling on how those spiders used to think, but there is one thing I am certain of now and that is the fact that they do think.

I can't believe there are people out there that didn't like this video. I grew up with a fear of spiders but around 15 years ago I started getting over it. I have many different spiders around my yard ranging from Huntsmans through to things like Red Backes, Black House spiders, and Garden Orb spiders. I have been watching them closely now for over ten years and I have seen some amazing things with them. They all have their own character and personality and they are a hell of a lot smarter than you think. I have gained the trust of a couple of the Garden Orb spiders in my yard over the years and they will come over to me when I go out to talk to them and will hop off their webs and get on my hand. They are so interested in us and the fact that they will even get on my hand speaks volumes to me. I have also relocated a Red Back spider by hand without it biting me, but in saying that I have been bitten by a Red Back spider when one got into my shorts while I was sitting on a chare and the bite is like a really bad jock rash and really burns but I never got any other side effects until the night after around 24 hours later and it was like I had been hit by a car and every mussel in my body was aking. I took a couple of painkillers and slept it off. I was fine the next day.

Because there are so many Spiders out there that they mass consume insects that eat crops.

Thomas, Your voice, the music, the graphics, the information, the photography- they all compliment each other perfectly. You are true artist. I think if arachnophobes would see this and open the minds to it their lives would begin to change. As a spider lover, I couldn't have appreciated it more. The graphic of differing spider eyes was my favorite! Did you create that? I'd love to study it closer; do you have it on your website anywhere? I am living in CA currently but permanently reside in Omaha, NE. I'd love to meet you someday. Perhaps I'll attend a workshop (even though I don't have equipment). Your passion for spiders is so admirable; I feel the same way about them. I'd love to learn how to get out and find them. I totally see myself lying on the ground to check them out like I saw you do in another video. Again, great work. I am a new but HUGE fan. You will probably never stop hearing from me ;) Aubrey

Thanks Aubrey, I appreciate the kind words! Yes, I illustrated the graphic of spider eye-arrangements (and the rest of the material for this video). A higher res copy can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/panbasket/

Years ago a friend sat on a toilet that was in a garage and hadn't been used in months. A Black Widow bit him and he was in pain for weeks (I think, it has been a long time). Mostly he was embarrassed but from then on, none of us ever sat down on a toilet for years afterward, without first looking under the seat.

I think the biggest thing that makes people so afraid of them is the "spooky" factor of the way they look. I used to be absolutely terrified of them growing up, but once I took time to capture and release spiders that appeared in my homes, I took the time to watch them interact with me and other objeect and observed them without disturbing and it came to a point where they just became fascinating to me. Sometimes all it takes is just sitting back and looking at things from a different perspective to really change everything.
