You have my deepest appreciation for your explanation. Such a simple basic math formula seems impossible to perform this repair without having this information. Yes. Time is worth money. Your time has a value. That time may be more valuable to you and hiring a professional seems logical. But knowledge is power and experience with knowledge is priceless. With KZbin filling peoples mind with crap to people videos like this is where the KZbin gold comes from. People who don't make a living from the views providing much more than entertainment. No regurgitated information they copied. Experienced passion with a talent for translating it to the average. Thank you thank you

Thank you for making these great series of video. I am a (technical) homeowner in the process of specifying my 12'x14' doors myself for DIY installation, and your series answer many of my questions, especially how the door will remain balance in the case of high lift. And I would point out I appreciate you videos have not distracting sound track but just calm and gathered narrations.

Thanks for clearing some of the fog in garage door engineering. Now I understand my problem is cable length.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it is very useful and greatly appreciated. I've worked on doors 24 by 24 ft. Train rail car overhead doors, wished I would have seen your videos earlier. GREAT JOB THANKS

@nathanrox88 Yes. The "hub" of the drum should be tight to the hub of the bearing (inner race). They both turn together. The bearings are made to tolerate thrust. You should watch some of the many "how to change a torsion spring" videos and pay attention to when they "set" the drums. There's a lot to it but its not hard. Quick and easy fixes only come about with lots of experience. Good luck!

@nathanrox88 Both drums should be tight to the bearings, as in the right side drum should be all the way to the right and the left drum all the way to the left. Some times the flimsy bearing brackets that support the shaft flex too much. If those bearing brackets don't have a flange for anchoring to the wall you may have to rig something up. Don't loosen any fasteners on the counterbalance without relieving the tension on the spring, which required doing all your homework.

It was 37.5 inch-pounds per turn, which at eight turns would be a total of 300 inch pounds for the application I was using. To figure out the spring size from scratch you need the door weight, height, drum size and amount of lift. But the formula is complicated so everyone uses a program to calculate it. Look up "torsion spring calculator"

Hormann sectional doors have not used "hybrid drums". So though they have standard lift doors their drums would indicate they have 0" lift. I rationalize this as wanting a perfect balance from the bottom to the point that it clears the opening. Whereas the normal "hybrid" drums make the door heavier for the first 8" or so inches before a perfect balance can be maintained. Your thoughts?

Very well put together series. I’m trying to determine a proper spring conversion for a 7’ door running on 5250-18 drums. Can you tell me what the cable drum multiplier is for those drums?

I have been installing doors for a couple years now, and i do have one question about the ippt on the spring. You say that your door, weighing 150 needs a 300 ippt spring. Now I have a spring rate book, and all my ippt numbers are when there is just 1 turn on the spring, so nothing is even close to 300ippt. That is when the spring is fully wound.. So how do i determine by weighing a door, what spring it needs, when my book only says ippt per 1 turn??

Are there devices that lock the door in place if the cable snaps on a vertical lift door?

Dear Sir, Thank you for the reply, Is it correct if the cable drum turns against the bearing? Because of its movement, the shaft will push on the right bearing bracket. So how can i stabelize the shaft? Thanks in advance,

Dear sir! You look like a proffesional. I have a question, my garage door has 1 spring, by moving up the door the shaft is moving to the right. How can i solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

Nathan Bernards make sure the cable drums are tight up against the bearing race on the headplate (where the shaft runs thru) the drums work to keep the shaft stable... It sounds like your single spring is on the left side of the shaft, as the door opens the spring wants to recoil in causing the shaft the shift to the right

Hi I'm new to this.. Thank you for your useful information. I'm very interested in being a garage door technician. I'm interested in opening my own company. Could you give me some advice?

I have advice. Work for someone else for many years until you have most of the fundamentals in place. Then consider starting your own business. I've been doing this for five years, as an employee, and the learning curve continues. So two years after your comment...did you get into the trade?
