Wow, that’s a wild story. I also played the role of Mame and cannot imagine doing it with an injury that severe. Of course my production wasn’t on Broadway but either way, that’s unbelievable.

She was amazing in that production-- I never would have known. I've never seen a production of Mame where the audience erupts into laughter every time Mame simply calls out, "Ito!"

lucy ball broke her leg when making movie verson of Mame

Actually, Ball broke her leg while skiing in December, 1971, before filming began for Mame. They delayed filming for over a year for her to recuperate, during which time she continued to film her series "Here's Lucy" with her leg in a cast. It is a weird coincidence, though, that broken legs figured into both Christine's and Lucy's Mame experience.
