Why is it that every white person retelling a story about a black person has to fix their voice to sound like Styles P? I used to co-manage a Madden league that was about 50% black, 20% white, 20% Mexican and the rest a combination of Samoan, Japanese, British, Jamaican, etc., and for some strange reason every time a white member would be in conversation (or trash talking during a game) with one of the league's black members it was always in that voice -- the one Ellen Pompeo uses for Denzel. Speaking as a white person, I would always find myself feeling hugely embarrassed on their behalf. Mind you, I was born in New Hampshire and have lived here all my life. I sound distinctly, unmistakably and undeniably white every time I open my mouth to speak, yet no part of me has ever thought to change my voice when I'm in conversation with black people. For starters, how could anyone not see through the disguise? And how could they then respect anything I had to say from that point on as honest or sincere? But even more so, what about me altering my voice to fit some fictional version of blackness could in any way assist me in relating to black people in a way that I couldn't better do through being my actual self, paying actual mind to these conversations and speaking to my own actual experience? It goes without saying, but black people are not a monolith and none I have ever heard speak sound anything like Ellen Pompeo's version in this video. It's like she thinks she can shortcut all social, cultural, economic and historical barriers by cheapening her own voice to sound (in her mind) as undignified as she imagines most black people to sound. Personally, I find that to be extremely disgraceful... Especially since she's using terms like "Motherf**ker" in a way that suggests all arguments between black people are won through aggression and degradation and not through principle. Something which, in itself, is quite racist.

There is no way that this story is true. Denzel doesn’t seem like the kind of person to go back and forth with somebody, especially not a woman. But more importantly…I feel like Denzel was and is a big enough presence that even as a guest director he could get her fired from her show. People don’t “yell” at Denzel. I haven’t watched movies for many years and the first time I saw Denzel was in Philadelphia. At that time a good friend had just died of AIDS and it was a moving and powerful reminder of the early times of the epidemic. To me the best scene was he and his wife at the Halloween party: their discomfort, their moral judgements being challenged by watching “them” in a large crowd having a great time. The camera focuses on Tom Hanks and his partner slow dancing, holding each other close and in their own world. The camera moves in on Denzel’s face. You can see him watching and examining and thinking hard about the live he is seeing. We can’t stream anything in our rural area but are soon moving the big city. I’m looking forward to catching up on the remarkable stories he portrays.

I was recently investigated over the phone by a white Italian special agent. He began to use foul language to me immediately, throwing in a couple of curse words and a forced tone that he assumed I was accustomed to, I guess, and it was very weird and odd and I found myself feeling oddly uncomfortable and frustrated that he would just come out and talk to me that way as a professional. He was bombarding me with all this tough-talk and curse-words that no woman's ears should be bothered with, especially from a man, a professional man at that. The whole time he tried to be comical and tried to get me to agree and engage in his rude behavior. I explicity let him know that it was completely unacceptable and wrong that he would assume that he could discriminate and stereotype me in anyway, especially since he has never seen me, or met me and it was his first time ever talking to me. Due to his investigation of me, I figured he probably knew how I looked but not sure if he has ever heard my voice. The fact is he didn't know me. Case in point, when you think you may be familiar with someones ethnicity and culture you're allowed to carry yourself with respect towards it, you allowed to assume that everyone in that ethnic group is of class and dignity and are to be treated with respect until proven otherwise, something like innocent until proven guilty, you know, that sensible thing, and you get to judge them not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

In the TV there is a different director every week because TV is a producer's medium. In film,. there is one director over the entire project so film is a director's medium. Ellen is used to directors coming and going on the Grey's set and she probably can say or do whatever she wants in a scene because they are TV directors. They defer to the star of the show. Denzel is a movie star and he is from the world where the director rules. When she got out of line and ad libbed, he checked her. That being said, I am sure she didn't call him a MF when he did. She was probably in shock because TV directors never check her but Denzel is a mega movie star and an artist. He would also never allow anyone to call him a MF in front of the entire crew - a crew that he also needs to have the respect of since he is the director of that episode. I think she is embellishing the story for her podcast. And, as the host of this show said,. it happened five years ago. We would have heard about it back then if she had actually called him a MF. That would have leaked to TMZ.
