The support system surrounding a speciality arguably is a bigger determining factor of which specialty you choose than anything else. The purpose of my 73Q series has been to showcase personalities in hopes that you would find one that fits you the best. Unfortunately, some fields have harsh stereotypes built over years of misconceptions and mistreatment that deters some of the brightest medical students away. Females in surgeon come across some of the most severe of those challenges and Dr. Yang is a wonderful example of how mentorship and community can be the weapons to break all the surgery stereotypes.

Everyone in my program and everyone I know from other programs vehemently argues that Ob/Gyn has the worst culture. (Toxic femininity, perhaps.) Women are not disproportionately targeted by belligerant male surgeons. In fact, the opposite is generally true. Don't forget that women in all domains tend to work fewer hours than men. They also tend to select careers on the basis of work/life balance. There's nothing wrong with the fact that most surgeons are men, just as there's nothing wrong with the fact that most students going into Ob/Gyn are women.
