@@Zickafoose2024 ...Yes. And food is where much of the inflation is occurring...hmm...maybe the two are connected. Just maybe, if farmers can't sell crop at a market rate, but are still effected by market pricing for production, they produce less crop. Which means the supply of that crop in the super market contracts, which in turn causes an increase in the price of that good. Which inceases the cost of farming, which further disincentivizes the production of more crops, which further shrinks supply, which further increases food inflation. It is almost as if the price controls that already exists are the source of the food inflation that is already happening, and if not managed can causes a negative feed back loop. But never-mind I am sure more price controls will solve the problem.

One of the key reasons people, prefer working from home, is that you don’t get paid, when you are driving, which does not sound like a lot, but assuming it’s that if you spend 45 minutes, getting ready for work, driving their and back that adds up 7 and half hours a week. Which is almost a whole days worth of wages, that is not even factoring in transportation costs, like Gas, insurance, and the damage driving does to your car. If you care about maximizing your income in the short term since you don’t see a relationship with this company and you think it’s going to fail, or don’t care about the future then most people would be willing to take a five or ten percent pay cut, in exchange for 20 percent less labour time, which they could spend elsewhere. As they said in this podcast show me the incentives and I will show you the outcome. Notice how I did not mention office space costs, or the benefits companies could in theory get from having people work from home, because I was doing a simple analysis on why people, don’t want to return to work. how productive they are is IRELEVENT IN THIS CASE since they don’t care.
@jellojiei60612 ай бұрын
@@CM-zl2jw me thinks you missed the point of what I am saying, not everyone cares about the future, and about the companies success, this was a basic Analysis based on what I have heard from people. Currently a lot of companies are failing to get people back to work I am explaining why they don’t want to go back. A lot of skilled people do want to go back to the officer yes but there are also a lot of skilled workers who refuse to go back to the office, and firing let’s say a quarter of your work force is off the table if you have any sense. I am not saying they are more productive at home, I am not saying they are more productive at the office, I am saying they don’t want to go to the office and many of them know the things that were talked about in the pod and simply don’t care. Firing everyone who stays online is also moronic because of the variance of skill level I have a friend who ran a start up, and in their company was a guy who refused to go back into the office, and the company despite forcing everyone back, did not punish him once, because he so good at his job not only was he the most productive in his department but he had better results than the next second to fifth people combined, now is this inductive of the average online worker no but the point is when one fourth or more of your highly skilled work force says I am not coming back to the office full time and are willing to not get promoted then you as a company are going to have to find a way around it. One thing I was mentioning here was maybe offering pay increases to the people that come into the office since they are more productive it won’t motivate most of them, but it might get a few. Another thing me and some friends were talking about, was VR this way you can build a headquarters that has a lot of the benefits, of working in the office with all the benefits of working at home, I know Nvidia spent a huge amount of money on their headquarters to have people run into each other I was honestly surprised they did not bring up Nvidia, when talking about office spaces but maybe it’s design is not that major compared to the other companies.

I'm in the FIRE movement so let me explain how most of us think about this because I don't think it got captured in this conversation. Let's say that you just make an Average Salary of 60k per year and work from home. Now, if you work from home, there are no transportation costs, no starbucks, no expensive lunch at the office, no after work beer and most importantly you can live far away from the city where home prices are 1/4th of what they are where your work is in the city. So even though 60k might not seem like much it's actually a lot if you then invest most of that capital each year into NSDQ100 or any other high performing index. If you start working in your mid 20's and keep at it you'll be retired in your mid 40's as a multi millionaire.

As an employee, why should one work more than 40 hours when one is paid for only 40 hours? One can be ambitious and plan to spend the rest of their time on other side hustles. Employers can fire you in a beat without thinking. So, I do not agree with the notion that if folks opt for work-life balance, they lack ambition. It’s simply that they’ve realized the nature of companies. A similar argument can be made for working from home (WFH). By WFH, I save 2-3 hours in traffic and avoid the frustration that comes with it. Also, in California, housing is very expensive. Isn’t it better to WFH from a place where housing is cheaper and schools are better? My advice to companies that want employees to work from the office: Provide good/affordable housing with good schools near the office to have a level playing choice. Also this podcast was done remotely and not in person from an office :) and proves wfh is not only possible but more convenient hence more productive.

I dont understand these comments on working remote. Chamath in a previous episode said his company is remote and doesnt see why he would go back only to increase Opex, lives in Italy for the summer, and does a poscast via zoom every week. They talk about how AI is similar to industrial revolution and where people were able to use technology to create efficiency instead of horse and carriage. How people are afraid of AI because they can't yet conceptualize how much value it will bring with new jobs, reduction in cost, etc. But, ironically, these guys can't see the same thing with remote work. The upside in efficiency, reduction in useless meetings, being able to work with team memebers in different time zones, reduction in living expenses, etc. I built my first start-up and exited it fully remote. Don't demonizie remote work and make it seem, "yeah if you want to break even, or just be a freelancer then it's fine" But, if you want to make it big go to the office. Atlassian is also a great example....

I think you shouldn’t hire people who can’t handle being top performers or reaching out to chat about the things you do in person. No one wants to drive an hour each way to work and waste that time. Maybe if you founders put businesses in better locations, sure, but that’s not reasonable for the normal working people.

Fascinating discussion about work culture!! I think you should explore the reverse premise of people who have worked 80 hour plus weeks and maybe not seen the success you are talking about. Of the people who put in the hours, there are a small proportion people who actually reap the benefits ( i.e. all the besties) and perhaps this move towards working fewer hours is a result of people who may not have achieved success working long hours , now seemingly finding they can achieve similar production working remotely with a new found benefit of more free time or flexibility that they otherwise did not have. I think the starbucks CEOs comments are a recognition of this. Capitlism only benefits those at the top - thats why billionaires exist. It does not attribute fair value to the countless employees on whom that success has been built.

I work for a large company that has 5 US offices. Everyone I work with is in different offices, none are in mine. The company has said, everyone needs to come in 3 days per week, but given that I am going to an office to work remote with a distributed team, it feels like there is no value add for me to be in. There's a lot of these kind of nuances at play around the remote work question. I don't think its as simple as coming in is better.

@frizzyrowlock96982 ай бұрын
@pindapy1596 - Yeah I agree, but also companies are large and beaurocratic and have a lot of areas to focus on, of which office space seems pretty low on the list. There is a bit of a transition period right now where people were hired in different locations. From the company perspective, everyone should be at least some of the time in office to collaborate. From employee perspective, they are being asked to sit in an office and “collaborate” with people via zoom. The end result is the same as if that collaboration happened from a home office. I can see why both sides feel the way they feel but it doesn’t change there is a pointlessness to this particular situation in reality.

I think there's a pretty big difference between being a wage slave and being one of the driving forces within a company attempting greatness. Nobody reasonably expects the wage slave to go the extra mile----or achieve anything meaningful with their career. It's expected daily from people at the top because they're compensated accordingly and it is required for both individual and corporate success for that handful of people. It's merely another face of the competition that is intrinsic to capitalism.
