Will Paterson - some video suggestions if you haven't already made them - rather than a critique, how about discussing sort of key points on what you look for that makes a logo good vs bad? Also, how about a video discussing the challenges of clients that challenge you? (as in don't have a trained eye but want to dissect your work). Just things I think would be interesting to hear your perspective on.

I really love these kind of "abstract" or geometric logo's. Even making them is so much fun, but its actually not easy to make them to be usefull. I mean, they still have to somehow point to the topic, or company, or feeling it wants to express and i have to tell you a LOT of people and costumers dont see what they should in them, (and lets skip the part where you say "make it better you are just bad", that can be a part of it yes) . And thats just 1 thing, the other is : They dont believe in them, or how much skill it requires to make a good one. So they are going to be reluctant to buy it...especially from a beginner designer....any tips on this? Should i just keep making non abstract ones for years, just because it sells better?

My first thought was a UK three-pin plug, at a jaunty angle with the live and neutral pins representing the upper and lower bars of the 'E' and the earth pin representing the centre bar of the 'E'. The body of the plug represents the back of the 'E'... The jaunty angle allows the middle bar to be a bit shorter than the other two bars. Also, everyone knows what a plug looks like and associates it immediately with electricity. A second plug rotated through 90 deg could represent an 'M' for the metering part. Great video, it's always important to emphasise the importance of drawing (no pun intended) from the words and associated terms and phrases of the company.

So your process is to scribble the letter E because the company starts with E. And THEN after scanning your favorite E you decide what it could represent? ...Well... How about thinking before drawing? In my opinion the first and most important thing with a logo is a good idea that represents the company's business/ the main topic they are dealing with etc. This should take a good chunk of the time invested into a logo designing process. Everything else comes thereafter ...otherwise it's nothing more than a pretty E.
@damnphotoshop6 жыл бұрын
the designer takes the brief into consideration throughout the whole process, if you haven't realized he literally sketches logos that pertain to the brief, starting with the letter 'E' is one of many ways you can start so I don't understand why you can't accept this process... furthermore if you don't agree with the process that isn't an issue, designing is about iterative processes and as long as everyone has a thorough process that benefits their workflow and outcome, it shouldn't matter. the way I see it, he's explaining his own process which in fact relates to mine a lot, I've interpreted some parts of the video for myself and I'm now taking these skills and applying them to my practice because that's what the purpose of a tutorial is.
@tiffanypersad46036 жыл бұрын
Even so the whole idea and point he was trying to make is to be rough. So yes you think of things that represent the company and their values/vision then write them down. Based on this you will have a better idea when sketching ideas on paper.
