You know, when James brings up the bit about the book cover saying "pick me up" and Chris says this is the job - I think another great analogy is album cover art. These days, you don't really surf the art - the way you used to at a record store. I think the last physical surface we saw that on - was the CD, which was even more fun - because so many times I'd buy what turned out to be not a great album - but a great experience thanks to the art on the front, back and then how the booklet was put together.

I disagree about Kia, The new logo is better and more visually appealing, so i like the logo but I am a graphic designer. Non designer people had no idea what the logo said and they have done studies on this. Maybe that was their goal…I think many graphic designers struggle to see design from the eyes of their audience who arent designers. Kia is a perfect example of this. So Kia logo is ok overall. To me ok is a huge improvement from their previous logo , the original was probably the most boring logo to exist in automotive industry.

Agree. First time I saw the logo was as large scale signage on TV at the Australian Open. They’re the usual sponsors. Great way to showcase a brand change however it was it was so challenging to read. KN.. KM.. I’m sure there’s method to its madness but it felt like they didn’t even consider large format to me, which felt bizarre at the time!

@Kaze919 Жыл бұрын
Yeah you can literally see the google trends spike for “KN car” since they rolled out the new logo. I do like it but convention has always taught me you need to be clear with your design. I suppose for an automaker it’s slightly different because of the prevalence of the brand globally but for most working designers who follow a channel like this I would argue for most of their client work this would not be a good logo to emulate.

It’s a beautiful logo. The problem isn’t the logo, I think the problem is no one knew the change from what they were used to and so everyone (including myself) thought it was a completely different company altogether. But I think they figured people would catch up and NOW we all recognize it and can appreciate it. Dis the launch if anything, but not the logo cause it’s nice 👍

5:58 This is so validating for the way that I want to create ads and environmental graphics. I work with clients in live entertainment who just want everything to be as big and loud as possible, no personality, no regard to hierarchy. It’s crazy how much of a struggle it can be to sell them on thinking about these things a little more critically. I’ve designed for teaser promos and this concept works beautifully, it’s so different than just trying to shove ticket sales in everyone’s face. I see lot of concern over immediate legibility directly affecting sales.

Similar thing with Zara's redesigned logo, people freaked out on the internet. Even I, when i first saw it, thought like it was rather a brave move. But seeing that logo on clothes, on bags and their webshop, after 2-3 weeks I was like this is smart. Only after seeing their old logo above the store entrance - that's when I saw that the new logo was amazing. The designer(s) who did the redesign was very brave, not many would pull off such kerning. But it fitted perfectly. Kia? After the redesign I really started to call that company KN. But the cars that they put the new logo on - offer one of the best designs out there (at that price range). The overly dynamic logo sits perfectly on their overly dynamic exteriors. Who cares if I call them KN, they sell like crazy here where I live, but you could rarely see a Kia 10-15 years ago on our streets.
@thomasjaviez2336 ай бұрын
To me graphic design is so boring nowadays. There is a trend towards minimalism and oversimplification. Sure, we need it to be clear and not overly ornate, but people have gone to the opposite extreme end of the spectrum, where oversimplification has started to become an issue & other graphic designers are noticing as well. I really appreciate this video. I have always felt that graphic design is about balance. You need to balance the form with the functionality. Balance artistry with practicality. Oversimplification does not find the right balance. It leans too far to one end of the spectrum. Thus causing an imbalance in how the audience and viewers receive the massage, & they often receive the message incorrectly because of this. I think James Victores work is at other end of the extreme, where he sometimes sacrifices legibility for expressiveness, as he states himself in the video. But it seems the goals for his work are different. To me the perfect balance would always be somewhere in between. Not at either end of the extreme. But it untimately depends on the goals of your project as well.

Let me tell you why I have a different take on this. "WE RECOGNISE THE SHAPE" is a key concept, I am a photographer and graphic designer, I have a past as a graffiti artist where a lot of times letters where written mirrored, so to my eye a backward N is still a N and it doesn't become an A. I have to admit the very first time I've the new kia logo I was watching the sport news, it was completely Isolated, on the Wall of the US Open and there were no clue of automotive whatsoever and I wasn't actually interested about who sponsored the tournament that year. I have to admit I have read it as KN myself, it took me a few minutes to realise it was the new KIA logo. True that you're driving the car not the logo, but if I have to say this was the smartest move they made, I won't.

I agree with the greater message of the video but I don't agree with some of the examples you've used to illustrate that message. Menu typography should primarily be legible, I don't care if it has any color or anything fancy, a menu is supposed to give me a lot of information in a clean quick way, if it fails at that then whoever designed it WASN'T thinking of the greater picture and most importantly wasn't thinking of the people using it. Same for the KIA logo, if most of your business' audience thinks it sucks then obviously you weren't thinking of the customers again. If they wanted to create a barely legible icon for the brand's futuristic 100 year vision, then they should have done it better.
@hullstar242 Жыл бұрын
