In Breakdown! Narrowboat Journey across The Lancaster Canal and the Lune Aqueduct, our canal narrowboat diaries see us leaving Aldcliffe as we continue exploring Britain by Narrowboat on the Lancaster Canal, through the city until we cross the spectacular Lune Aqueduct, engineered by John Rennie, and make our way to Hest Bank. We find a lovely morning spot with views of Morecambe Bay and the Furness Mountains.
During the recording of this vlog, Colin had a meltdown. His autism creates chronic anxiety, stress and depression that gradually builds up and causes these breakdowns. After a lot of thought and discussion, we decided to include footage of his breakdown and we talk about Colin's mental health in this vlog.
Catch-up on every vlog, from the beginning, in order, as we explore Britain by Narrowboat:

Colin, i have to tell you i cried when i saw Shaun talking about how you took off down the towpath and no shoes on. I did watch another video when you were talking about mental health. I am so glad Shaun showed the raw part because i truly think there are so many people that don't talk about mental health and i believe that there just might be someone that will see this and it will help them. You are truly blessed to have Shaun as he to have you. Truly soul mates. I will be always keeping you in my prayers now. I hope you do not mind. Just know your friend from Las Vegas cares.

It is many years since I called Lancashire home and these videos are like a trip down memory lane. I have fond memories of walks along the canal through Chorley and of visiting Glasson Dock especially. Colin you have a gift for bringing these places to life rather than just showing us a scenic tour. My great aunt was blind since birth and lived in Leeds; she was very independent and always carried her white cane - usually folded up in her bag - not because she was ashamed but because she did not want it to define her. I hope you can find ways to let the wonky wiring in your brain just be without defining you and without needing to hide it. You make great vlogs and undoubtedly people will be watching who are inspired by you. By allowing us a glimpse of how your mental health affects you, you provide hope and encouragement to others. Be kind to yourself.

We are no robots and we are allowed to have these moments. Shaun talking about you, Colin, with so much love and understanding was great. I know what it's like taking care of someone with a mental health issue. My advice to you is don't neglect yourself. I'm still on my Foxes Afloat binge; I commented on a previous vlog about Colin's openness about his struggles with mental health. This is a powerful vlog; it documents the abyss those of us who suffer these meltdowns can get to. I, too, have my rock in my husband Mark. He's gone to hell and back with my journey and, honestly, I don't know where I'd be today without his love & never-ending support. Where I differ is my take on medication. The meltdowns, for me, are completely exhausting. It takes me days to recover; meanwhile, Mark is in a constant state of despair during those episodes because he feels helpless. He's had to take off from his job to fly home to be with me (he travels extensively for his job). Because of our particular circumstances, exploring medication was a good idea. I'm on a very low dose of mild medication and it has helped immensely. It was another journey to get to the right med & dosage but it's evened out. Medication is an extremely personal choice; I know it doesn't work for everyone. Again, thanks Colin for sharing this powerful message. xo - Derek, CT USA

@@FoxesAfloat Colin, *NEVER* ever worry about Trolls/negative people 💕 I was born with a cleft lip/palate - to understand, I once had a passport for 10yrs that described me as ‘Facially Disfigured’ under ‘Distinguishing marks’. Imagine the joy of showing that at Passport Control! 😂. Because of this, my face was/is a *magnet* for bullies and trolls. My amazing mum taught me something important about them: she asked me “why do you care what they say? They give you a gift to be able to see horrible people in life straight away, and so you can dismiss them immediately. Why is what they say of any value if that’s what they do to people? Just ignore them’. You have something on Social Media that is stronger than that ... you just block them 😉👍. The saying is ‘never feed the Trolls’ and that is true because their aim is never to understand/be enlightened, their sole aim is to hurt. Don’t give them that power ... just block them, don’t engage with them, and don’t waste any more brain cells worrying about them. By speaking out about mental health you are helping the people who matter *far* more in life; keep doing that and never allow others to silence you. This was so brave and a wonderful thing for you and Shaun to do as you showed both sides of mental health issues - the person who suffers, and that there is impact to the person who supports (that is currently *way* down the agenda of getting mental health issues out in a public arena). Love you guys ... and remember: just ‘block’ 😉💕 xxx

My goodness, no wonder I love this channel so much! I'm autistic, suffer from anxiety and depression, and I feel that same way so often... Thankyou sooooo much for talking about it, honestly and a little bluntly. It really does help to know we aren't alone, and we should change the conversation so it's just as normal as talking about a broken bone. Big, socially distanced hugs from Australia! Maybe one day when the world isn't shut down I'll get to the UK and see some river boats for real. Looks so lovely!

It hurts to see you suffer the way you do. As I had mentioned before, I'm a Vietnam Vet and suffered with PTSD. I can relate to some of what your going thru and I can tell you torment like that is devastating and almost indescribable. One thing that I did learn over the years of suffering was that I am in control. Basically it's your brain and it's up to you what thought you allow your brain to think. Of course this is much harder that it sounds but it is possible. Over the years I learned what thoughts were helpful and what thoughts to avoid. Thoughts could lead to anxiety or even panic attacks. It took me years to train my mind, but I did it. I don't suffer the way I used to and I'm so thankful for what I went through because it has brought me to now. I know that your condition is different, but I hope this helps in some way.

Amazing! When I read breakdown, I thought some technical difficulty involving the boat. I was swept away by the brutal honesty of showing this ASD episode. Words are one thing, you can tell what's going on. But to have it documented in the direct and loving way Shaun did, really bolt. Thank you, makes me appreciate your channel even more. Lovely Lune aqueduct footage anyway, breathtaking indeed, even made my 18-yo daughter look away from her own screens (Inkmaster and phone) in appreciation. Well done!

I genuinely believe this is the best vlog of all. The emotional rollercoaster it’s provoked in me has been amazing. The high of the drone shots of the Lune Aqueduct to the low of the foetal bed shot (brought back some sad memories, did that). Allied to that the wonderful shots of your handsome dude Dillon and Shaun being a complete hero, this one has it all. Love and respect to you both.

Colin, you are not alone with your struggles with Mental Health. As a sufferer of anxiety and depression mostly balanced with medication many people still don't understand when I just can't go to a party or get together or have a breakdown. The one grateful thing is that I now understand how I feel and process. And for me and those closest to me that is a comfort. Take care of yourself in your own time. Sending you some positive energy from Canada. Btw, my husband and I live aboard a sailboat, 6 years now. Thanks goes out to Shaun and all those partners who do their best to support us.

This has been years ago, but those drone shots... I can't imagine how that Lune aqueduct didn't become a tourist attraction way back then! So gorgeous. It's lovely to see you two work thru the mental health issues and the breakdowns in such a positive way. No recriminations, just loving support and acceptance from both of you that shit happens and then you move on together. Really lovely and I could just feel the care coming thru the camera via expressions, tone, body language etc. Also, speaking of s**t (lol!) when I was caravaning about Australia, a friend of my friend there referred to the cassette toilet jokingly as the 'porcelain god', even tho it's not porcelain like a house toilet and gotten from the American expression of what drunks do when the bed spins hit - praying to the porcelain god. He did so because he liked to talk about emptying it as 'servicing the porcelain god'! and made jokes about my servicing the porcelain god during my road trip. ;-) I do think others Guzzunder to be the best as it rolls off the tongue nicely during convo. Gotta go, guzzunder time or the guzzunders over there....

You get my respect and compassion. I lost mates in Orlando, and one amazing officer who responded was going through hell just months prior to retirement. It was pure bull, and his colleague who was in Nam said what went down was that level and he simply needed help. Minus details, I and others requested his case be redone,my role was doing this with both town he worked for and his force, and we did it. He and his family would have been financially destroyed, not in any way a hero just wanted to respect him for helping my mates.

Colin, you have a beautiful soul and it shines through in these video's. You are who you are and if other people do not like some aspects of you THAT IS THEIR PROBLEM NOT YOURS. Nobody is perfect and if anyone thinks they are then they are fooling themselves. Mental health is not discussed enough, it harks back to people being locked in lunatic asylums when out of sight out of mind was the order of the day. We have come a long way since then but, as a society, we need to work harder to accept everyone for who they are, the good and the bad, without judgement. I think you are both fantastic and I look forward to that little bell telling me you have uploaded something new. Enjoy the rest of the Lancaster, some amazing scenery awaits you :)

Colin & Shaun - thank you for sharing this - you are so right when you say that mental illness isn’t talked about! I don’t understand why there is so much taboo about it! The brain is just another part of the body, when it doesn’t function as perhaps it should, then just like any other illness, support, love and kindness go a long way. One in three people will suffer from some form of mental health problem during their lifetime - everyone will know someone who suffers! We all need to talk about it, and ensure that there is help out there to help cope with the dark times. Too many people think it’s possible to just snap out of it, or think more positively. But when things are bad, then this just isn’t going to help. My wife has suffered with periods of acute mental illness over the years. Her breakdowns have been awful, but she has always managed to get help and those of us that love her are there to support her through the bad times. Thank you for sharing and highlighting these issues! Keep up the good work - your videos are eagerly awaited each week - the quality is absolutely breathtaking! Best wishes to you both! David x

Hi Daryle. Thanks for a lovely comment. Unfortunately, positive thoughts don't come close. Anxiety and breakdowns caused by autism related stress can't be overcome by positive thinking. There are no medications or therapies to stop it happening. This is why I want to raise awareness of it. All mental health is important, and there are literally thousands of variations. I hope that by talking about it people might understand that it's not as easy as looking on the bright side. Much love to you! x

First I’d like to say that I’m new to this channel so I haven’t seen a whole lot of the videos. But I think it’s good that mental health is being discussed by the two of you. Because some people may see your videos and think “they got the life” ride around in a boat all day and no cares in the world. But nobody can see how hard it is being in our own head at times, and we are far too hard on ourselves. This is not just mental, it’s also chemical in balance in us. And I think there’s two things that we really need, one being a good supporter to talk with, because this gives us acceptance, and maybe some guidance. And to find ourselves a good affirmation to use over and over in our head. I know there’s more to all this, but I wasn’t trying to write a book on my little knowledge. Good video.

When I saw the title, I thought I hope it’s the boat and not Colin! I suppose you just have to be positive and appreciate the fact it’s happening much less now. Sadly I don’t think anything in this life is stress free but you are immersed in nature so that’s about as good as it gets. I’m glad you shared it and that you’re feeling much better now. I certainly don’t want you to feel you need to be anything other than yourself because not one of us is perfect! The video was wonderful and I think suffering the Ribble link was definitely worth it. The Lune aqueduct was amazing and the drone footage was excellent. I loved the ripples on the river and canal travelling at right angles and catching the sunlight, that was really beautiful. Dylan (I bet I’ve spelt it wrong again!) is gorgeous and my number one boat-tube dog. He reminds me a little of my oldest cockapoo, Jethro, he’s also a little on the chunky side and pulls like mad on the lead but he’s a beautiful, intelligent and loving companion. Thanks as always for a fabulous video. I can’t wait for you to get to Morecambe. Oops I almost forget! The pot must be called Jerry. My granny always called the chamber pot Jerry so I googled and it said an alternative name for the pot is Jerry or sometimes Jordan but I’ve never heard that!
