Tom Holland is known for the engaging podcast series "The rest is History" and acclaimed works about the Persians and Greeks, the Roman Empire, the rise of Islam, and the Christian Middle Ages. He attracted attention when he, as an atheist in 2019, published "Dominion - How The Christian Revolution Remade World", about the Christian revolution that continues to shape our modern intuitions and reflexes.
Holland does not hide the tension between the church's power and Jesus' message, while at the same time pointing out how crucial the latter became. History does not follow straight lines - but the belief that the almighty God chose to be born poor and defenseless, and died abandoned and despised on a cross, has shaped us for almost two thousand years. Instead of cultivating strength, power and honour, the last should be the first. The weak and powerless, the miserable, have intrinsic value.
