Yeah I felt the lighting wasn’t as bad as some were saying based on trailers and stuff, but it definitely needed a bit of adjusting, especially when it came to light overexposure in some scenes. I saw Wicked last night in Dolby, and I absolutely loved it. I thought it was spectacular. The performances were amazing (especially Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo), the musical numbers were grand and the costumes were exquisite. I had very little complaints about this. One of my biggest concerns going in was the movie being split into two parts, but I thought Part One felt satisfyingly complete. Great review, however, I'm now questioning your rating system. I can't comprehend Alonso rating Wicked lower than Red One.

I acknowledge where both of you are coming from. The movie dazzles as a spectacle while also generating a bit of empathy. There's the star-crossed romantic angle, with both Elphaba and Glinda having eyes for Fiyero, while Boq has eyes for Glinda, who's fobbed him on Elphaba's poor sister. Then there's malevolent, villainous aspect, the unexplained harnessing of their animal professor and other animals. Erivo and Grande make for credible allies despite their contrasting characters. When it's apparent that the Wizard is a shyster, thus crushing Elphaba's hopes and dreams--that begs the question as to what ARE her hopes and dreams? Becoming accepted by society? Therein lies a bit of a disconnect....and the big secret as to the identity of Elphaba's real father. Hmmm, one is of two minds. Christy points out the impressive production design, choreography, costuming etc But bottom line, do we really care about Elphaba, given her ultimate tragic fate? Alonso has me mulling over the true emotional aspect. Certainly worth a look.

Am now definitely seeing this with The Wife From Another Life. She loved the stage show, which I admired more than loved, "The Wizard of Oz" is my favorite film -- you never forget your first-- and the message of both Mr. Maguire's novel and the original show was already topical; in the wake of what's about to happen in this nation and by extension the globe, it's downright trenchant. Act (Part) 2 is not remotely reprise-ridden, nor predictable, and actually has the single best number in the score, Elphaba and Galinda's climactic "For Good." There's a reason it's run so long, and, in our previous career w/LAT, when we commiserated with interviewee Stephen Schwartz over it losing the Tony, he was hilarious in saying the last laugh was on "Avenue Q," and proceeded to cite "Wicked's" global grosses. Another great review. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso. ❤❤

I think part of the issue of only seeing part 1 and not knowing what happens in part 2 is there are really unexpected plot twists that come together when the musical wraps up, truly elevating the experience of the show. The movie makes you wait until the next movie to elevate the unexpected. Alonso seemed to know the general idea of the part one “prequel” concept, so came in thinking he would not be surprised by it, and has not been yet. If you enjoy music detail, though, listening for Wizard of Oz themes inside of the orchestration of Wicked is pretty cool to find, and the music has become pretty darn “popular”. I am very much looking forward to taking my kids who are big fans of the musical to see the movie.

@@BreakfastAllDay my interpretation of The Wizard in Wicked is that he's kind of a cowardly fascist dictator, which is linked to the "something bad happening in Oz", the animals having their voices silenced; I absolutely love this musical for being about otherness, colour, disability, queerness, transness; there are literally soldiers (Nazis?) in the classroom at the beginning, and animals tryjng to learn are put in cages meanwhile you have Elphaba, who is literally Assigned Green At Birth ("green" is her only descriptor in that scene), and Wicked is her coming out story ("something has changed within me, something is not the same; I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game; too late for second guesses, too late to go back to sleep; it's time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap") it's also the story of how losing people she loves will be inevitable when Elphaba is finally true to herself, an experience I've had as a trans woman more than once, the knowledge that "I love you but I can no longer be myself when I'm with you, we aren't alligned morally anymore" lastly, it's a tragedy: she is ultimately called a villain by society, hunted down, and killed, the fate of too many queer and trans people in our society

People really need to stop focusing on the fact that they made this into two movies. Anyone who knows the book and broadway broadway production knows that the two halves can be standalones. If you only end up watching Part 1, you honestly don't need to continue if you don't want to. You'll be satisfied with where the storyline goes and ends. Personally, I think the broadway production rushes through Act 2. Probably in an attempt to get people out of there at a decent hour but also because the first Act is much longer. But as someone who has read the book, there's so much more to be told in Act 2. For that very reason, I actually hope the Part 2 of the movie is also 2hr40mins long. Agree with pretty much everything Christy said. Alonso, OTOH, meh.

As a massive die hard fan of Wicked i didn’t enjoy this movie: the vocals of esp. Cynthia were too pop/R&B sounding-she sang w less vibrato & brightness than ive heard her do on Broadway. Likewise the songs had an annoying electronic pop beat behind them that i hated. There were too many interludes/ interruptions in the songs that killed the emotional build & tension. The songs felt lackluster & subdued. The costumes lacked storytelling. The practical sets looked like CGI. The CGI animals looked horrendously bad. As for the story, the broadway show is kinda lackluster in terms of story. Now mind you, i had read the novel before seeing the show, so that does give a different perspective & adds a lot to the show’s story but i do understand that for ppl not having read the novel, the plot & story can come off as weak. However the bombastic thrill of seeing this show live in theater w live singing & smoke & the puppet dragon-the amazing spectacle of it all-more than makes up for that. However seeing the story play out on screen, the storytelling weaknesses do become even more blatant.

Won't someone cover the perspective of "people who only know Wicked because of that Broadway Bro-Down South Park episode??"

Why is it in 2 parts… I hate when movies like The Hobbit, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows went into two parts… it’s ruins the continuity, and it suckers people to buy more tickets… I get it … it’s a business…. It’s a turn off

I knew it was part 1 because defying gravity is the theme song for trailers and they showed Dorothy Toto scarecrow tin man and the cowardly lion in the glass globe I’ll call it they start at the end of wizard of oz and go backwards like Tarantino is known for it is it’s own movie genre and then part 2 is when we get the full Judy garland movie but from the povs of the witch’s like how the 300 sequel does when you watch 300 the rise of Rome your watching a prequel a sequel and the first movie again that is all wicked is then return to oz that Disney made is what happens to Dorothy after the wizard of oz that Judy garland did

This was the first review of you guys that I've watched and I have to say ...this guys take on this film is just sooo off to me, that I doubt I can watch anymore 🤷🏻♂️. I mean art is subjective and we all have our opinions but somethings are just evident. I went in fully expecting for this movie to let me down, for it to be soulless, overly glossy and all the things he basically says it is... It was NOTHING like that. It was so grounded and tangible, the songs didn't feel overproduced, the voices were authentic and not processed, they built incredible sets, had great costume design, the cinematography, the intricate choreo and camera work, the cast, their performances, the film was dazzling. He agreed with most of her points and his critiques lack foundation for me. I also don't get what the issue of the shift of tone was. I mean that serious authoritarian part, is really what the story is about. That the truth was manipulated and the story that we know of the Wicked witch isn't the real story. The book is much darker. I'm just not seeing how this critique adds up.

No spoilers yet Alonso kinda spoils the whole first act and initial set up of the movie.
