As someone from Venezuela, this movie wrecked me (more likely it destryed me), becasue it is something so close to our current reality... I almost had to walk out of the theater, but in the end I'm glad I watched it until the end. I recommend it to everyone, no matter the political ideology they might have... 💔💔💔💔

Hi! I'm going to add a little more context to the film: All of of the songs that the family listens at the house are musics from musicians that got censured during the dictarshiop and the songs that we listen on the radios are popular songs, but from artists that were complict with the regime. When the military comes to kidnap Rubens you can see them lurking around, looking at their vinyl collection and books, they were actually looking for "subversive" material. Also: the helicopter thar flies by them at the beach, were used to drop bodies at the sea. We only found about that about that decades later. Walter was very clever about that, but again: you have to be brazillian to know that I really dont know why it didnt got nominated for adapted screanplay :( And Director for Walter, bc the music, our art, is really important for us, and he was able to show that in the movie. Also: millions of milleniuns and Gen X grew up reading Marcelo rubens paiva books, and his family. We all love him, and we are really happy that they are getting this level of recognition. NOT SO FUN FACT: Rubens has a statue in Brasilia, and at the day of the inauguration, Bolsonaro spit at the statue, and said that he deserved to die. Yes, he is that low

I am a Brazilian guy in my late sixties and I can tell you that my parents always asked us do not tell anyone what was said or spoken in our house. This recommendation was to protect us. I understand that Eunice Paiva was trying to preserve her family. More than two decades of silencing people, among my friends there was a now deceased lady that her husband was taken by the government and nothing was explained for decades. Unfortunately, it was something that happened more than we realized at that time. I will try to see the movie because I have no courage at this moment, still hurts to think about people that I knew and disappeared in strange circumstances.

I hope you find the courage to overcome this difficulty. I knew many of the people mentioned in the film. For me, it was especially difficult to go to the cinema and relive that story, told by relatives with so much sadness. It is truly a distressing and sorrowful experience, but at the same time, a relieving one. No one leaves this film the same as they entered; I felt like I was in a time machine. Hearing the silence in the cinema throughout the entire session and, at the end, the tears of the people made me feel grateful for having the opportunity to reconnect with this story.

Another Brazilian fan here! I'm so glad you guys got to see this one. Here, we are rooting for this Oscars like it's the World Cup. This movie is incredibly important for us, especially with the resurgence of the extreme right around the world (history definitely rhymes). The boy in the film, the youngest of the children, grew up to become an important Brazilian writer and wrote the book on which the movie is based. He began writing it when his mother, Eunice, was losing her memory to Alzheimer’s. He said that, just like his mother, he felt the country was forgetting its own history, and that we must remember it so we don’t repeat the past. Also, director Walter Salles was childhood friends with one of the girls, which is why the house feels so vivid and full of life-he experienced it firsthand.

Fernanda Torres’ performance in the ice cream shop scene in I’m Still Here is nothing short of breathtaking-an Oscar-worthy moment of pure, raw emotion. Without needing grand monologues, she conveys an overwhelming mix of frustration, exhaustion, and heartbreak through the subtlest yet most powerful expressions. Her eyes, filled with unspoken pain, dart between her children and the situation unfolding around her, silently pleading for control, for relief, for a moment to just breathe. The way her lips tremble, the deep sighs she takes as if trying to suppress an emotional collapse-each micro-expression tells a story more devastating than words ever could. Then comes that desperate attempt to maintain composure. She forces a smile, nodding slightly, as if convincing herself and those around her that everything is fine. But it’s not. Her hands fidget, her posture stiffens, and in that brief moment where she looks down, it’s as if the weight of the entire world crashes onto her shoulders. The moment the tension becomes unbearable, she lets out a restrained yet gut-wrenching sigh-half a breath, half a sob-before gathering herself just enough to push through. It’s the kind of acting that doesn’t need words; her silence is louder than any scream, her restraint more painful than an outburst. Few scenes in cinema achieve this level of emotional depth. It’s not just acting-it’s lived experience, it’s truth, it’s heartbreak in its purest form. You don’t just watch this scene; you feel it. It’s unparalleled . this touching scene we will NEVER EVER forget it. 🎬 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Fernanda Torres delivers an extraordinary performance in I’m Still Here, demonstrating her mastery of nuance, depth, and emotional intensity. With every scene, she captivates the audience, balancing raw vulnerability with a quiet strength that lingers long after the credits roll. Her ability to convey complex emotions with subtle expressions and precise timing is a testament to her artistic maturity and deep understanding of the craft. What makes her portrayal truly remarkable is the authenticity she brings to the role-every gesture, every silence, every glance feels deeply lived-in, as if she is not merely performing but embodying the very essence of the character. This level of commitment transforms the film into an immersive experience, making it impossible to look away. Her Golden Globe recognition is well deserved, not just as an acknowledgment of this singular performance but as a celebration of a career defined by excellence, fearlessness, and an unwavering dedication to storytelling. Fernanda Torres is magnificent and phenomenal. Hats off to Torres. Congrats Brazil for this masterpiece. "I'm Still Here" and Fernanda Torres deserve Oscars! With the alarming rise of authoritarianism globally, this film's powerful story of resistance against dictatorship is more critically relevant than ever. It serves as a vital reminder of democracy's fragility and the urgent need to defend human rights and justice. The film boasts an exceptional script, crafting a compelling narrative that resonates deeply. The masterful direction brings this story to life with impactful visuals and a palpable emotional core. Fernanda Torres delivers a nuanced and truly masterful performance, embodying the strength, vulnerability, and unwavering resolve of a woman confronting unimaginable adversity. Her portrayal is both captivating and deeply moving, connecting with audiences on a profound level. "I'm Still Here" transcends mere entertainment; it's a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a potent call to action against oppression, making it an essential and compelling cinematic experience worthy of the highest accolades.

The beauty of this movie is it’s humanity. How it’s about life, family, love, resilience, motherhood, finding joy, perseverance, moving on, and, above all, how important is to defend our rights and our democracy. How important is not take our rights to vote and choose our leaders for granted because it will affect us - right now is so relevant and a movie everyone should watch and think how our voices and the fight for freedom are more important than the stock market and the price of bacon! Freedom is not about having the right of carrying a gun or saying whatever comes to mind in social media. Freedom is about living with respect and dignity. Eunice never lost her dignity and, with respect and integrity, raised her family with love, not hate, and still managed 4:55 to became one of the biggest advocates for minorities. This movie is fantastic. That woman is fantastic.

For me, one of the most interesting aspects of this film is how the Paiva residence is essentially treated as its own character. It’s through the house that we get to know the family - not just through what they do inside it (the parties, dinners, music, dancing), but also through the set itself, the lighting, the ever-open doors and windows… Then, later in the film, that changes. It becomes darker, more closed off, until, inevitably, it’s completely empty when the credits roll. Brilliant direction by Walter Salles. And fun fact: The house used in the film is a real residence, very similar to the one where the Paiva family actually lived (which has since been demolished). Walter Salles insisted on using a real location, and during the film’s preparation, the cast essentially lived there -cooking, spending time together, and rehearsing scenes. The actors playing the children were even encouraged to decorate their own bedrooms. All these details contribute to making the film and their connection as a family feel even more authentic.

💎 Fernanda Torres was the fourth brazilian actor nominated to Golden Globe, but the second with a Portuguese-spoken performance. The first one was her mother. The other nominees were Sônia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador and The Burning Season) and Wagner Moura (Narcos).

💎 Fernanda Torres, aged 20, won the award for Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival by the movie Love Me Forever or Never (tied with Barbara Sukowa, by Rosa Luxemburg). She was the first brazilian actress (of two) to win an award in Cannes. The second one was Sandra Corveloni that, coincidentally, was directed by Walter Salles.

A film that addresses emptiness and absence. A photograph that reminds us of a documentary because the situations presented are so realistic and explicit. In addition, of course, to Fernanda Torres' interpretation, which prepares her children for years of mourning. She played many mothers in this beautiful film.

walter salles was friends with one of the paivas girls and spent a lot of his time as a teenager in that very house. he saw it bubble and he saw it getting shut down. so, this is personnal for him as well. and the author of the book in which this sotry is based on is marcelo, the boy of the family. he started writing im stil here - the book when he saw his mother losing her memory. this film is also about memory and its importance to everyone and to the society as well. great reaction! love it.❤

I'm silent a Brazilian viewer and have been watching since the Young Turks days, probably over a decade ago now. You guys have been with me through all of my 20's and I'm now 31 lol it's lovely watching you talk about a Brazilian film. We're really hoping the success of this film allows for much needed changes in our movie industry so that more gems like this one can be made and shared with the world.

Be careful, this comment contains spoilers. Thank you for the review, this film is very important for us Brazilians, a film that rescues a memory that was being lost, a memory that shows us what we should never return to. Eunice Paiva was an extraordinary woman who made her difference in the world, graduating as a lawyer at the age of over 45, fighting for human rights and the rights of the indigenous peoples of Brazil, Brazilian indigenous people owe a lot to Eunice who helped create several reserves that today protect the Amazon and the forests of Brazil that still remain. Fernanda performs in her gesture, her gaze and her contained pain. It shows the strength of this woman who, despite everything she went through, remained standing and raised her children and formed them with dignity and resilience. Fernanda didn't need to dishevel her hair to convey the feelings she wanted and that for a performance is something complex. Eunice died with Alzheimer's, her memory in life is gone, but in history her memory will remain alive forever.

That's a really trenchant remark that Alonso makes about tumultuous times boiling down to the lived realities of individual families. Whether we're watching CNN or ABC or Bloomberg or Fox News, you can get so immersed in the same hyped-up narratives that you might neglect your own everyday life, your own soul, start tuning out from your quiet deep wisdom. You might get so hopelessly inured to applying the narratives you've been fed that you alienate your very friends and family. I've heard countless stories of these family rifts, shared online. No bueno, no bueno at all! It's like that classic Nietzsche aphorism, when you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you. When you commit your mind to whatever mass media is feeding you, you might miss opportunities in your local life to really make a difference, connect to people in enriching but more modest, ordinary, sustainable ways.

and may I just remark that while your vocabulary and rhythmic deployment has always been top of the line Christy, it's leveled up even further since you got completely sober, your mind is just so great! the human equivalent of the Hope diamond! 🤓

Wish this movie talked about the past... It talks about the present. Leaders who attempted coup dʼetats were elected both in Brazil (Bolsonaro) and the US (Trump). Trump was even elected again, and is already violating human rights like thereʼs no tomorrow.
