Even if the five were guilty of the other assaults the reason they vacated everything was because the rape carried so much more time. I don't just mean time at prison. They had to do stuff after prison. They couldn't move on with their lives after they got out. Because the laws back in the day like they illustrate with Raymond's character you can't have an association with another felon which means you can't even work together so your jobs are limited. Where you live is limited. You have to register as a sex offender and be subject to those laws. Especially with a long parole. Our system isn't structured to reform people it's structured for recidivism. I've heard several stories of people that have been in prison and they say on the way out of the prison guards look at them and say "see you next time" or "can't wait till you're back." So completely vacating all the other convictions even if they are true is the least they can do for that top-level conviction. Because that carries so much more weight than anything else. Being juveniles with those charges most likely they would have gotten a year in juvie or they would have gotten community service. even the internal investigation into the prosecution of the Central Park five says they were glaring misrepresentations and ignoring evidence.

I taught American Government in Maryland. The curriculum has a strong unit focused on Due Process, officers come in and walk students through their rights if arrested or accused as a crime. I never had one student absent during these lessons. It's so important to educate students of their rights in the legal system. I always thought this was the most important lesson for students.
