Very powerful story, unfortunately many of us share the same experiences. As a motherless and fatherless child, I don't think people understand how it effects every aspect of your life... no matter how successful you are, you can't replace the cracks in your foundation.

I second this❣️ It’s like having a hole in soul and no matter how hard you try to fill it up with things like relationships, clothes, drugs, alcohol, being a workaholic, purses, makeup, hair and or shoes just to name a few. You still feel that void aka hole in your soul. With the help of therapy or not, the only thing you can do is acknowledge how it affects your life and manage that your traumatic pain so that it doesn’t consume you. Once you acknowledge and manage it, you have to learn how accept it And that’s the biggest pill to swallow.

Kirk's experience is what made him who he is today. As unfortunate as it is, Kirk turned his pain into prayer that in turn became his music. Had Mr Rick been a present figure in Kirk's life, he may have never become a messenger for Christ. What the enemy intended for evil, God used for good. 🙌🏼🙏🏼🙌🏼

I’m sure he would trade it all to have been loved by a family as a child and now. The pain made you who you are is a myth that black people tell themselves to make things feel better. It’s simply NOT true! How many children who have had his experience are working for Christ??? I assure you more are working for the other side and struggling because of their terrible upbringing. This man's documentary was so RAW!!! I feel for him. I grew up with my biological parents and felt loved by none of them. I was nobody's apple's in nobody's eyes. I quickly thought: "oh well, so be it, maybe I'm not lovable by others, but I love myself". I later understood my parents lacked self love, so they couldn't give it to me. I just learned to rely on myself. They're older now, and they heavily rely on me. I've managed to heal myself with all the help I could see and receive and I'm happy to give them money, logistical and admin support. I'm trying to give them love but I've so learned to protect myself that it's work in progress. I'm grateful for all they gave me and don't blame for what they were not capable of doing.

This is a powerful conversation and so much to unpack. As Black men, we’re witnessing another black man show up broken and vulnerable. This isn’t easy for any human but especially Black men as no one holds space for us to be in this state. The one thing that I hope everyone takes away from this that no one owes you anything rather it’s our responsibility to recognize and heal the traumas in our life. Our parents have their own traumas that show up in their ability to parent. Life is about capacity which is limited or abundant based on who we are. Kirk’s trauma is also directly connected to his success… he wouldn’t be Kirk Franklin without it. A huge part of healing is forgiveness and releasing fear. True forgiveness sets us free and gives us back our power. The longer he waits on his mother to acknowledge and admit that she’s wrong the longer he’s going to give up his power. Authentic Love and forgiveness allow us to move forward without expectations but understanding our parents have a past and can only give what they have.

True for unbelievers, but Christians owe God to love the broken and wounded. As Christians, we're called to persevere, to be patient, and simply be available to the unloved and outcasts. We simply shouldn't just lookout to our own interests.

@@Anointed1s_TV how can one truly love if there’s no forgiveness regardless of one’s religious belief? Self love allows us to love others. Fear and trauma rob us of these things. Kirk has not forgiven his mother and hated a man that he perceived as his father for decades. There’s a lot of work and healing necessary on his part.
@Anointed1s_TV Жыл бұрын
@@dlj8694 self love without recognizing how much God loves us unconditionally is fickle. Anyone that has self love without a relationship with God cannot truly love themselves or others. A person may think he/she love themselves, but if they are on drugs, a smoker, or promiscuous, then they truly don't love themselves. Drugs destroy the body, cigarettes destroy the lungs with cancer, and being promiscuous puts the body at risk to catch aids and possibly infect a spouse. Self love is dangerous if it's not properly inherited. Kirk does need to forgive his mother, but his mother should reach out to Kirk and apologize and seek forgiveness. Until that happens, Kirk will always struggle emotionally and even God understands that.

07:47 My father walked out of my life when I was 2. He left my mother & went to a woman who was pregnant with my brother, who passed away in 2021 at age 50. This year, 2023, I was searching online to see if I could find out more about my father's military experience, he served in Vietnam. That's when I learned my younger brother had passed away. I was then connected to an older sister I lost contact with 20 years ago. We didn't grow up together, so we had only met 20 years ago. Through this sister I finally got pictures of my father. And they were pictures of him with the deceased brother as a baby and the woman he left my mother for. All very happy pictures. I have NO pictures of my father holding me. NONE. It evoked feelings in me that I never knew I had. My father passed away in 1990 at age 50. I found out in 1994. I am 55 years old and still those wounds, that I thought had healed, are still raw. My father did pop back into my life when I was 14 until age 17, So in total I knew him 5 years, FIVE. Queen Latifah is my 4th cousin. The Owens' in VA are a huge family - and I didn't have the opportunity to grow up with them, to know them, to learn my family's history. And now many folks are passed - and that just shatters me. I am grateful for Ancestry.com and the DNA that opened up a whole window to my family, one that was a black hole.

I love my mom with all my heart. I forgive her becaus she was very young and going through some trauma, but it still hurts every single moment of my life not knowing who the other part of me is. Just so people understand that in the 60's and 70's people were doing crazy things like " running trains" where a group of guys were having sex with one girl. I believe she had no idea who the father is and cannot not come to terms with this. She will never admit what happened. There are so many men and women born from this atrocity now in their 50's and 60's who will never know who their father's were. I believe Kirk is asking her for something she can't do.

@@MamaDee737 I think she is living in shame, I really can't speculate on what the reason is. It could be what you are saying, but we really don't know. But, if she does know who Kirk 's father is, he does have the right to know. I'm hoping one day that Kirk 's mother can come forward to tell her story. Maybe it will free her from some type of ugly secret. I don't see him pressuring her to do so at any point. Maybe Kirk, will never get the truth he wants from his mother...then, again maybe he will.

I know how it feels to be in a state of lost and confusion. My mother passed away in February 2022 and we had not had a relationship for over 20 years. I’ve never known my father and have lived my life wanting to get the answers but knowing they would never come. To have the questions and knowing there is only one person who holds the truth is traumatizing. Throughout my life I’ve had to build a love of self because I walked my path alone. My faith brought me through many hard times as I served in the Army and later contracted overseas. When you have to walk the path alone it is hard but faith and many blessing from the man above helped me to overcome. I have built a relationship with my adult children that no matter if we don’t see eye to eye and can’t agree I’m still here for them.

Once when we first saw him with his aunt in the SUV, again when he saw his father, and in that room with his mom discussing the second paternity test. I felt like he went along with the second test because he was seeking her to give him the acknowledgment he so very badly needed to bring so closure to this. I wonder if his mother suffers from mental health issues and who knows what trauma she could have had growing up. Glad to see Kirk doing the work to break the cycle.

What bums me out is if a black man abandoned his child for 20+ years and refused to tell his daughter who her real mother was most of y'all ladies would NEVER say "l wonder if he has mental health issues and who knows what traumas he could have had growing up."... Most of y'all ladies would call him a no-good deadbeat father, and some would use him to say black men aint ish. This hypocritical double standard is quite sickening to me. Nevertheless, l pose this to y'all who give women like Kirk's mother every excuse in the book to avoid holding them accountable... What does a black woman have to do to her kids for you to say they are a deadbeat mother? (Nota Bene: You can't name none of what Kirk's mother did since y'all haven't called her a deadbeat for her behaviour.) I'll wait...

Dr Berry . and this is the very reason why its important that no matter what beef we have with the other half . we do not cut half of the gene pool. Black americans have double grief , being forcibly removed from the african continent and denying their african heritage in modern time. and add to that the fact that easy 80% of household are lead by females only. Identity is key its the building block of ones own existence. Black americans MUST speak at least one african language and ensure fathers or paternal side of the family are present in the upbringing of kids.

Love to see this healing conversation amongst brothas!! Cheers to Charlemagne and Envy for creating such a safe space for Kirk to share his story.

Thank you for sharing. My Dad held on to the truth until he was diagnosed with cancer and terminally ill. He told me about another sister that I didn't know about. I met my sister when I was almost 40. So, we missed out on all those years of sisterhood. People STOP hiding whole children. You create other issues that can be difficult to reconcile.

A trauma bond is when a person forms a deep emotional attachment with someone that causes them harm. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable, uncovered, and transparent is ministry. Our enemy loves to paint a distorted picture of our lives. He visits us in the midst of intense pain and isolation to drive home the lie that only you are experiencing what you are experiencing. It's one of his weapons against the hearts and minds of broken people. God is using Mr. Franklin's life to heal a generation of people. His story reminds me of Joseph. In the documentary, he asked who am I well. Every struggle, mistake, lonely day and sleepless night. Every unanswered question and even lack shaped the man we see today. Only in the heart and mind of a sovereign God. May The Lord continue to heal, cover, and protect your family.

The story with his mom is sad but unfortunately many in our community have similar stories. Our women would rather a child grow up fatherless than introduce them because of a situation between them two. It shouldn’t involve the child no matter how bad y’all at odds.

This is powerful, and I thank Kirk for being vulnerable, while still giving others hope. Charlemagne asked him if it’s trauma bonding with those of us that listen, I don’t think it is, I will say that his music has helped, and pushed me to keep going when I wanted to stop, and give up. And I appreciate it so much. And I thank God for allowing him to be a vessel for all of us. 💜

It’s hard to know Gods love as a father when you’ve never had one. I felt that in my soul. As someone who was abandoned and rejected by both my parents and who has never met her mother…I truly understand his pain. Prayers and blessings to all of us who are part of this unfortunate club.

I'll say it transcends nationality. Being Puerto Rican is a nationality not a color or race. I'm sure Puerto Ricans of African descent exist.

Thank you Kirk! The reality is no one escapes this side of eternity without trauma, adversity, pain, and hurt. But Kirk what you are talking about is giving people what they need for the journey. Sometimes pain, hurt, adversity, and trauma can distort our vision and distract us from our purpose. But what you are doing is giving us reason to keep moving on. To keep pressing in to the call lead before us. Most folks don’t know how to navigate our stuff (hurt/pain). So we this message is timely. God Bless you friend.

I have a great amount of respect for Kirk Franklin. He had it very difficult and made so much of himself. He also comes across as very evolved and enlightened, as well as a really caring and sincere human being. I know he has a lot of pain within him, and I really wish him love and peace. I'm also very proud of the man he grew to become. I'm very inspired by him because I had a very challenging family and early life.

I was adopted my aunt. I grew up down the street from my mom, but we had a relationship, and I found my dad at 40yr. It's been a beautiful thing. Not knowing a parent when you know they are there does damage you, but you have to put that work in to heal yourself.

@theodoremccall7077 Жыл бұрын
@@PHlophe down south it happens a lot. It's not a legal adoption, they just give you your family members last name and it goes from there. I had a lot of homeboys who were given to aunts and grandparents. Kinda like 50 Cents with his grandparents and his mom stayed in the same house. Mine was just down the street and not on drugs.
