Depends on their expansion strategy. If they don't open too many at once, there will be enough demand just as how Jollibee and Chick-fil-a are maintaining their customer base in Toronto.

With the average McDonalds meal already costing $15, most people will just dump fast foot and go to a casual dinning restaurant instead. Shake Shack is sorta an in-between fast food and a casual dinning restaurant. If I can get casual dinning quality food that's close to fast foot prices then Shake Shack might have a winning strategy. Think of it like someone wanting Business Class but Premium Economy is available which offers almost the same thing at a lower price.
