And yet we still have people questioning why we need unions, like any of these companies are going to just do the right thing without some outside force twisting their arm.
@dorpth
@dorpth 5 жыл бұрын
@Dissenting Tirade A union's whole purpose is to provide a net benefit to workers, and only fails when corruption sets in, as is the case with any system to have ever existed. A company's whole purpose *is to provide as little as possible to workers*. This is what they are supposed to do BY DESIGN. Worker exploitation is exactly what the company machine is set up to do. Saying that unions experience corruption, hence unions should be disbanded, is like saying that the solution to cheating in sports is to get rid of the refs.

Dissenting Tirade unions are what got us the weekend, overtime pay, the 8hr work days and anti child labor laws. Stop falling for the lies that unions are bad as if to say companies are perfect entities as they are now because they are not. A union would comprise of the workers themselves standing up in solidarity with one another for a decent wage and working conditions rather than competing against one another for mere breadcrumbs. HR isn’t there for you, they are there to protect the company.🏴

@@darkstar4494 at the time it was my only choice if I wanted to have any sort of income, was recently out of high school at the time and had been applying for jobs like crazy. Amazon had been the only one to contact me at the time. So it was either get treated like shit and have some money, or not have anything at all. Sometimes it's not so easy as just saying "fuck you" and quitting. Luckily it was only seasonal and I found something a few months after that but still. In all the jobs I've had, Amazon has 1000% been the absolute worst employer. And from what I've seen it's only gotten worse and no one seems to care. I currently work at Amazon fulfillment, and I don't know how I feel about this year's peak season. I mean, peak season doesn't officially start until mid November and we're already being hit so much mandatory OT. Not to mention my school accommodation is being denied because my classes don't interfere with the work schedule. Yet due to all of the fucking mandatory OT I can't keep up with the homework. So now I burnt through all of my UPT (Unpaid Time Off) to keep up one of my classes. Mind you, we only get 20 hours of UPT that is supposed to last for 3 months and then we get another 20 hours. So if anything happens, I'm screwed because I have no UPT to cover the times that I might show up late all because my school accommodation isn't approved. I need a better job then this fucking shit. Around the time when all of the good places I've worked started going to hell there was a buzz term that kept coming up "limiting liability" which initially meant running a safe workplace for the employees but transformed into figuring out ways to escape responsibility for corporate actions. 7-11 is using slave labor and is guilty of Human Trafficking in Long Island? Not so, those were franchised stores and even though 7-11 tracks every single metric of their businesses and micromanages it's franchise stores the corporate entity escaped any blame for human trafficking a.k.a. "slavery" because they were able to place the blame on the franchise owners. When Exxon bought Mobil they were heavy on "limiting liability" to the point where employees were not even allowed to change a light-bulb, they had to call in a work order for an outside vendor to change the light bulb and the employees were just expected to work in the dark until the "electrician" got there and it was often an actual licensed electrician they paid to literally change a light-bulb leading to a policy that you could not call in the work order unless 50% of your lights were out because they were only pretending to give a shit about worker safety when the reality was that the stores were getting dangerously run down and that invited a less desirable customer base to shop with us because the respectable customers went to the clean and well maintained stores. The human trafficking actually happens quite often in 7-11's where they will bring over immigrants on work visas, often from Bangladesh (look at the work conditions in Bangladesh and you'll understand why this seems a good deal for the immigrant) and force them to work 70-100 hours a week while paying a substandard wage. At the last 7-11 I worked at they circumvented overtime and labor laws by just making everyone a salaried "manager" earning $500 a week no matter how many hours they worked. This is "legal" despite the salaried workers earning far below minimum wage when the salary is converted to hourly earnings. The employees are responsible for covering any shortage in the drawer despite the fact they did not get to balance their own drawer and there were nothing preventing anyone else from logging in under a different employee's code and framing them for the theft; this drive their average hourly wage even further below state and federal legal minimum wage laws but no action is taken because they are "salaried employees". This drives wages down for everyone because it sets an industry standard.

Sadly its the same everywhere now, a relative of mine was overworked so hard in a factory role they had to take early retirement and live out the rest of their life in a wheelchair, the companies response was it was my relatives fault for working too hard and not bringing up their worries with their managers. I have had friends who worked in factories who work 12 hour a day shifts and come back with injuries from overwork and employers want them to sign disclaimers to agree to 60 hour work weeks (or more) the few people who last there smoke cannabis in their cars in their breaks to numb the pain, so they are working heavy machinery and stoned whilst doing so, the workers say if they query the workload they get one warning and if they query again they are fired, and all that for the minimum wage!

This is absolutely true!! I USE to be a driver for Amazon, I was let go last September when my delivery van had to stop on the highway due accident involving a semi truck. I was stuck in traffic for close to two hours. I was able to finish all my deliveries still by the end of the day. I was terminated the following morning. Even with picture proof from my phone, they still let me go. Thankfully i was able to obtain a better job within the weeks after.

To start off I’m a truck driver for a big company, professional drivers do have a lot more risk and rush in their jobs than people think. But most of what was covered in this video is already illegal. Even Uber has to shut down for 30 minutes after 8 hours of working forcing at least a lunch. But I can only blame amazon for the pressure, at the end of the day it’s up to the drivers to do their job safely. If they are being threatened with a firing unless they do something that they they KNOW is illegal then do it safe get fired and take legal action. Might be tough but it’s better killing someone or hurting yourself. PS I believe it’s a federal or state by state thing about paternal leave. Look into for your state since that’s who pays for it, but you should be legally aloud to so that the father has bonding time with the baby. California’s is 6 weeks I believe

Jake Wynne I doubt most are, but there are gray areas with class C cdl. But that being said, even companies like Uber and Lyft where your considered your own boss in a sense, are being forced to have their drivers shut down for a bit after 8 hours. People need to research their rights as an employee and stick to them that way they can safely do their job and if fires they could be in for a payday lol

My doctor asked me at my last check-up if I needed help getting out of my living situation because he thought the bruises and cuts from working as a driver for Amazon were from an abuser. If we get in a wreck, they send someone to take 20 stops off us and a new van to finish the route. What bottle is best to pee in is a daily topic of conversation before we get sent down to the launch pad. And to top it all off, Amazon has the gall to send us a blurb every single day about how safety and worker wellness is their top priority. Unfortunately, it's the only unskilled job in town that pays enough to afford an apartment and have enough left over to tuck some away for finishing my degree so I'm stuck with it until I go back to school next fall

As a former Amazon driver I can say with absolute certainty this is 100% true. From October to about March is considered a “blackout period” which means you cannot even request time off under ANY circumstance. They give you one day for Christmas off. That’s it. It’s disgusting and the way they treat you if you simply get sick is unacceptable.

I recently left my job as a delivery driver for a DSP at an Amazon warehouse. I can attest that all of these things that you have mentioned in this video are true. I got treated like absolute crap from my DSP. I was always compared to other drivers and got told that if I had to have any more rescues/help with my route that my position with the company would be re-evaluated. I was always sent on rural routes out in the country, up to an hour away from my station. Usually, I would have anywhere between 100-200 packages. Every morning my DSP had us clock in at 9:30 AM, but we wouldn't actually get loaded and on route to our delivery locations until around 10:30, sometimes 11:00 AM. That's if I didn't have to stop and get fuel first, then I wouldn't be on my way to the first stop until 11:30. We all had to get fuel at the same time until recently. With the time change, it gets dark so much earlier. My DSP tracked drivers through the mentor app. If a driver got phone calls, much like what you said about robocalls or even a dispatcher calling my phone, it would hurt my score. Speeding would also hurt my score as well as backing up too many times. Sometimes, backing up couldn't be avoided. If the vans sit for a period of more than a few minutes, the dispatchers would call and ask why I wasn't moving or what the problem with my route was. What took the most time was if I had to call driver support for something such as the GeoFence not working, not being able to find the address because the GPS sent me elsewhere, or to see if I couldn't get a hold of the customer when their dogs were out in the yard. This sometimes takes more than five minutes. As far as bathroom breaks and lunches, I didn't get to really take those either. If my route was out in the middle of no where and the nearest gas station was ten miles away, that eats into the delivery time. I am almost embarrassed to say it, but I have ended up urinating on myself because I couldn't get to a bathroom. I had to take a 30 minute break if I worked over 6 hours and again, its not like I can just stop and take this 30 minute break. So, I would constantly have to eat while driving. Sometimes I wouldn't be able to eat anything all day because I was so busy. Most of the time I was instructed to take my 30 minute break on the way back to the station when I was done with my route. This involved me clocking out on ADP and taking my lunch. So technically , I was driving while off the clock. My DSP didn't offer us any sort of protection from dogs. I was told just to put a package or one of the bags in between myself and a vicious dog. Like that was gonna stop the dog from ripping my throat out. Also, I was made to drive in dangerous weather conditions, especially in the dark. On my last route, I was instructed to drive over several flooded areas. It is especially dangerous to deliver in the dark out in the rural areas where I live because of the dogs, wild animals, and possibly getting a gun shoved in your face for being on someone's property after dark. I busted my ass on a daily basis for that DSP and tried my best every day, but apparently it wasn't good enough because I started getting my hours cut. To me that is like taking food off of my families table. Recently 12 or 13 of my coworkers left the DSP and went to work for another one because of the manager who runs the one that I worked at. Sorry this is such a long comment, but I wanted to share my insight and experience from this job. There is so much more that happened. Message me if you want to know more about this.

It's true. In our area drivers don't make that much doing a full route $15/hr is it. They force you to take breaks because its law but the workload is so much most drivers work through it. However, if you do take breaks, you won't be able to finish the route risking termination if you bring packages back. The hiring well is drying up because word has gotten out about how terrible the working conditions.

One thing that often gets overlooked when it comes to Amazon is how they stretch the truth about "creating jobs". I live in Seattle (amazon HQ) and I can tell you, a lot of these "jobs" being "created" in their corporate office are 1. DRASTICALLY underpaid and 2. INSANELY short contracts (we're talking 2-3 MONTHS!) Creating ultra short contracts is NOT job creation the same way a long term contract or permanent position is. Amazon treats its employees like disposable tissues whether they are working as drivers or in the corporate office.

update: sunday morning, I got a phone call from the owner of my dsp telling me im gonna be let go from the company.it was amazon's call on me. reason due to routes getting trimmed and my performance wasnt good enough to amazons standards am I bummed?? a little, but im relieved its over. I kept my score over 800 on mentor and the 5th efficent driver in my company. I only lasted 29 days there. the stress of delivering these packages are insane. I didnt have much average up to 200 but my routes were all over the map which made my days time consuming . only one day I had a good route which was last saturday which i finished early. I had all houses which was great. but I did have to rescue a fellow driver who was loaded with 300 packages. he did 100 deliveries leaving him with 200 packages plus overflow. I delivered some till my dispatch called me back to the station. when I came back I explained to the associates i had done this rescue I did what I could. thankfully I have an interview tomorrow morning for a new job. I kinda knew my days were gonna be numbered. amazon sucks horrible company. im not mad at the dsp they dont have a choice but listen to amazon or else the company will close . I will not spend another dime on them. I gotta get something. i'll go to a store around my way.

Worked as a driver for Amazon. It was awful! They paid a daily route pay with no overtime. The route was set at 10 hours a day not including drive time to and from the route, breaks, and sorting packages. I typically worked 13-14 hours a day and was usually one of the first 3 back. If you have a package that's not on your route and its within an hour drive you are expected to deliver it before returning. They track your scanner all day at dispatch and call you and tell you how far you are behind. Amazon employees will report you if you don't deliver all packages and at least the contractor i worked for would cut your days. They expect you to stay out until all packages are delivered even at night when you can't see anything. It's awful and would not recommend to anyone

I used to work at a warehouse, but I worked in the office building attached. I had many interactions with the warehouse workers and drivers through the course of my job. The differences between Amazon and where I worked is insane. The place I worked everyone had access to healthcare, working conditions were far less garbage, and the pay was much higher as well. What I don't understand is how the job I had could afford such luxuries and Amazon cannot? Aren't they a trillion-dollar company... you'd think the working conditions for a company worth that much would be outstanding. I was honestly in a state of shock when I heard that someone working at Amazon in similar positions didn't make even half of what the people made where I worked. So, to put it shortly, the warehouse workers/drivers at my previous job worked fewer hours, had fewer tasks to do, and were paid far more than Amazon workers in similar positions. Amazon is a garbage company that doesn't value its employees. I don't understand why anyone would support them.

The fact that Amazon dictates every aspect of the "3rd parties" actions means they can not legally be considered 3rd parties or independent contractors. For them to be considered not working for Amazon Amazon can do more than literally tell them "here pick up these packages, deliver the packages here, here is your money" and that is all they are allowed to do without considering them employed by Amazon.
