this episode really shows who walt and jesse are at the core. one is kind, the other is ice cold. when they're together it can be extremely entertaining and even warm, or just sickening. it's a twisted father-son relationship. jesse never stood a chance against walt's manipulation, his big heart was always used against him. this episode really shows their true colors when they're not around each other, no masks

Jessie knows what drugs do to people. Jessie is an addict and lets face it. He is a drug dealer. He isn't a good guy, but he is also not evil and the character has legitimate empathy. Jessie has strong feelings about children. It is part of his character probably because he is being cut out from the life of his little brother.

I think Jesse's perspective is a bit off because he's clearly not as susceptible to addiction as some. He quits cold turkey a few times through the series and is able to generally manage it, which is not something a lot of others can do.

I think you're the only reactor to think Gretchen and Elliot did nothing wrong. Creator of the the show, Vince Gilligan says, that everyone assumes they must have wronged Walt, but Walt left Gretchen and sold his share of the company because he couldn't handle being around Gretchen's ultra wealthy family. They didn't cut him out, Elliot didn't steal Gretchen, Walt is bitter and regretful for what he gave up.

Since you asked for related spoilers (but without being too specific)… Jesse’s empathy for children will be a central theme to this show. That is to say there will be other scenes where we see children in awful life circumstances. But personally I think this episode is the toughest one to watch in that vein. Most of the other scenes that come to mind are difficult but not drawn out through the entire episode or shown in such a painful way. To avoid them you would miss a significant amount of very important content in the show.

When that kid turns to Jesse (random stranger) and says "I'm hungry", I am filled with such a mix of rage and sorrow. Just a reminder to always try to be helpful and kind to little kids, because we don't know what they're going through. I say this as a father to a small child, people mistreating children should be ashamed, except they are apparently incapable of shame. Makes me mad 😡

This is an episode that has always haunted me...because of that kid. And it's an episode that gets it right by stripping anyway any notions that there's anything noble about what Walt is doing. He's helping perpetuate all this sadness and madness by getting into this business. It's something the series is not always consistent on, since at times they make Walt feel like a total anti-hero.
@ankhtahr1401

I THRIVE on the spite you have for Walter, it's so satisfying to watch you see right through him. Many people adopt Walt's view of himself as the poor genius who just always got the bad end of the deal, while the show is making it pretty clear that his pride and his protectiveness around his work have always been his downfall, even in the Gray Matter days.
@thedarkemissary

Nah. That couch speech will always be his definition of himself. Being Heisenberg is what truly lets him be free and find fulfillment. And it's his pride and protectiveness that allows him to succeed as much as he does. He's just very poor at spontaneous adaptation.

It's a compelling contrast to see the veneers of both Jesse and Walt start to slip away. Jesse is shown to be much more than his flunkie "Captain Cook" personae, while simultaneously its becoming clear that Walter the dedicated teacher and family man has merely been a convenient disguise for the cold, calculating and egotistical monster underneath.
@SuzakuX
@SuzakuX 10 ай бұрын
I think something a lot of people overlook about this episode, and uniquely this season overall, is that it shows a lot of the otherwise unseen victims of Walt and Jesse's trade. _This_ is Walt's contribution to the world. Now, you can maybe make a libertarian argument that they're just giving people what they want, but what they're giving people is poison, and a point is made that Walt's product is more potent, more addictive, and more expensive than the competition.

Vince Gilligan has talked about what led to Walt and Gretchen splitting up. Walt was brilliant but deeply insecure. He came from nothing while Gretchen came from a rich family. He felt inferior because of this and eventually he broke off their engagement while on vacation with her family. He then decided to sell his shares in Gray Matter to Elliot for around $5000. It was after he left that the company became successful and he became bitter and felt they were making money off his stolen ideas, though he remained friendly with them. But remember this, Walt sold his shares on his own because he felt insecure about his fiance's wealth. Nobody forced him out or tried to talk him into it or even made him feel unwelcome. And from what Vince has said Gretchen's family was nothing but nice to Walt. The decision was fueled purely by his own ego and pride yet he acts like he was intentionally slighted

Regarding Walt & Gretchen's history, nothing more is said about it on the show, but in an interview, one of the writers, either Vince GIlligan or Peter Gould, said that while they were dating in the early days of Grey Matter, Walt & Gretchen went to visit her family, who were super rich and had a home in someplace fancy on the East coast, like Martha's Vinyard or the Hamptons, and Walt felt uncomfortable and ashamed and out of place, and resented Gretchen for it, and blew up the relationship afterward, and that resulted in him selling his stake in Grey Matter to Elliot and Gretchen, which was not worthy very much at the time, and the work they started together, eventually bore fruit and they got rich, while Walt worked at another lab, met Skyler, and then things never quite took off financially for them.

This episode in particular is my favorite. Not in any good way, but as far as character growth. I believe the writers were planning to kill off Jesse after season 1, but the fan base in general liked Jesse as a character. So the writers went back to the writing room and changed the story to make it so Jesse didn’t die when they were originally planning. They then wanted to build Jesse’s storyline to get more people to like him. They hit the target perfectly with this episode.

real warning - this show does involve kids being hurt. I would say they do not linger on it as much as this episode. but take care of yourselves. I am sure there a warnings somewhere on the web for each episode, maybe read ahead to prepare/know when you're in the right head space to watch (if ever).

This shows the reality of meth: as much as I like Jessie (and I really dislike Walter) they're preying on this type of people to make money. When you think about it it's just awful how many lives Jessie and Walt are willing to destroy for money. The difference between Jessie and Walt is that Jessie has to face the reality while Walter never truly does and he has this "romantic" vision about what he is creating. In other words: Walter is doing everything to save his family, including sinking other's families

I guess I'm done with movie/show reactors, I don't understand these reactions, saw quite a few like this recently. Sure the episode is brutal and isn't fun to watch but it's fictitious. If you are that distressed watching a story, how do you even cope with reality, knowing that such events, and worse, happen to real people all the time. I'm not jaded, it hurts seeing this kid living in such conditions but again it's actors in a show. So either it's faked reactions, or it's real but then it's overreaction over a few scenes, which means either can't deal with real life or in complete denial and thus no point watching. Emotional response should be proportionate, if made-up stories and good performances fire up your brain or heart that much, how will you be able to handle things properly when bad stuff will happen to you or to someone you know/love ?

It's called immersion. How do they cry at the end of The Last Samurai? It's fictitious. It ain't real. So, how do they cry? How do people cry at the beginning of The Last of Us? It's fictitious. It ain't real. So, how do people cry? Maybe you don't have the ability to immerse. Or maybe you are desensitized. Sounds like a you problem either way.

One of the traits that defines humans is our ability to engage in storytelling. At its best, storytelling requires the audience to willingly suspend its disbelief. We know that we're looking at actors on a stage, shadows on a movie screen, or pixels on a monitor, but we intentionally set aside that reality so that we can experience the story on a personal level - that's the magic of storytelling - and when the storyteller and the audience make this kind of connection, it can generate real emotion and passion. When a person reacts emotionally to a well-told story, it doesn't mean that the person is too dumb to understand that it's just a story, and it doesn't (necessarily) mean that the person is faking the emotion. It means that the person has entered into a contract with the storyteller to suspend disbelief and actually engage with the story. That's what I'm seeing here.

@@thedarkemissary I know it's a me problem considering many people seem to think it's the normal way to react to things. I'm not saying people shouldn't have reaction because it's fictitious, that wasn't my point. I get emotional too watching some stuff. My point was how much should a story move someone compared to how real life stuff does. It feels to me that people are way more emotional to what happens to characters in shows than what happens to real people.
@lonebear6779
@lonebear6779 10 ай бұрын
@@jameskaten8291 I understand but in some ways, I probably can't completely relate to that. I can't set aside reality completely (so yes a me problem). I don't see being manipulated blindly by a storyteller to feel emotions so strongly as a good contract. Getting some levels of emotions, some thoughts about the situation, how it can relate to my life is all good, but getting so worked up, so sad, so angry and all, that affects you for a while after the scene is done or the show has ended, no thanks. I want to feel and think at the same time, not being so overwhelmed by emotions that you can't process stuff while it's happening.
@deltoidable

@@lonebear6779 Yeah, that's true in the sense that we're exposed to real world horrors mostly through sanitized new's stories that leave out a human perspective. When we are exposed to real world horrors through a detailed first hand account, people are much more emotionally responsive to that reading statistic. Also, characters in shows often are based of real people, or represent the experience of many people. Child abuse is real, and depictions of it can remind of that it's reality, which can be upsetting. Stories really force you to engage with something in a way that the real world can't. People who are that sensitive don't usually seek out detailed real world horrors, because they find it even more upsetting.

The exact situation of how Walter left is always a bit ambiguous but my personal interpretation has always been that Walt has always had that chip on his shoulder and felt out of place around her family's wealth and left. Maybe there was faul on her side as well, but Walt strikes me as someone who has continually sabotaged himself out of pride. He worked on Nobel-winning research and he couldn't find work beyond high school chemistry? Nothing against it, but the pay isn't great and it doesn't seem like Walt is there for the love of inspiring young minds. No, there's a pattern to this guy.

This episode has always been the hardest to watch for me. Other episodes are not this hard to watch. After watching this episode for the first time, I had to take a break from the show for a little bit. Later I realized it's an important episode, it shows that their crime is not victimless. There are layers and layers of victims coming out of them selling meth. I have skipped this episode on some rewatches of the show.
