He's broken. He's beaten. His son hates him. He threatened his wife over the phone so that she wouldn't get a hard time from the police. His brother in law is dead. His money, everything he worked for, is stolen or sitting uselessly in a barrel in the middle of nowhere. Everything he's worked for is for nothing. He's finally done. And then... Elliot appears on TV and publicly rubbishes his intelligence, his genius, his accomplishments. And suddenly, that pride, that ego, that ruthlessness, is back. He's Heisenberg again, one last time. I absolutely love this scene. Using the main theme as a the background music was perfect. Gretchen is literally describing how Walt broke bad and has ceased to exist past that point. The show was literally about to end with Walt getting arrested and giving up. A rather anticlimactic ending for such a complex villain. Gretchens little speech reminded him that there is no Walter White left, only Heizenberg...and Heizenberg goes out on his own terms. It's in this moment that he comes up with the idea for the final episode. He realizes how he actually wants to end this nightmare he started.

Walt fucked up, and Gretchen and Elliot didn't remind him of what was taken from him, but rather what he impulsively threw away. Walt didn't like being reminded if he fucked up, just ask Mike. Oh wait, you can't. Also, Walt, at that point, was a wanted man who was suspected for serious charges so are we really going to blame Gretchen and Elliot for not saying they used to work with a criminal on live TV? This is the guy whose a genius at chemistry and can rigged together random things in order to make poison and homemade turrets, and yet is incapable of checking his own limitations? Seriously. Let’s also remember that they destroyed 3 cartels and Gus’s cartel only consisted of some random Hispanic dude, one black guy and mike and his 9 informants? The entirety of a 100,000,000 dollar meth operation. (Not including whatever other drugs they were selling.) and by simply killing Gus Walter got away with it? A lot of the story is just bullshit and makes little sense from a in world perspective. So many people want to lick the asshole of breaking bad because everyone else does it without standing to question it.

0:37 I genuinely felt so bad for him. This wasn't Heisenberg. He had literally called the cops to turn himself in and just seemed content in what he viewed as his final moments to enjoy a drink and watch his old friends talk about the good old times, back when they set up Grey Matter together. And then even that is denied to him once he hears that. They deny everything he did for them to keep their cash flow going. Walt might've sold out because of his own insecurities, sure, but nobody had the right to deny him the credit of his contributions. When he looks at them and hears it, it's almost like he was entranced. He was just happy drifting into the past, happy to remember what they achieved together and see it brought to light so that the world might have some small measure of what Walter White was worth, and then they rip him out of it and deny him everything again by saying his contribution to their billion Dollar industry ends with his last name. Those kinds of actions created 'Heisenberg' in the first place. Those actions did it again here.

Reminds me of that animated sketch about the IPhone 4. Didn't matter what the rest could do. "I want the iPhone 4." The whole point is that people like Elliot and Gretchen made Walt who he is. Be nicer to your peers. Try and recognise the good in them. Because with your mindset, odds are you've got a Heisenberg brewing in your own life.
@tamonekicofi2 жыл бұрын
What really hurt Walter in this scene wasn't Eliot saying he only contributed the company name (which is obviously false) it was Gretchen saying how he changed and isn't the same man she used to know (which Walter deep down knows is true). Walter didn't leave Gray Matter because they scammed him, he left because he couldn't stand working with people equal to him, he has a pathological need to be superior to the people in his environment. He declines their help later on for the same reasons - he'd rather make drugs with his former not so bright student than accept help from people that are on par with him. It all comes down solely to his pride, cowardice and ego.
@TheStraightestWhitest2 жыл бұрын
@@tamonekicofi I have to disagree. His bearing changed when they denied his contributions, not when Gretchen said the kind man she knew was gone. Yes it clearly agitated him, but it was more the final drop. The heartbreak was clearly them saying that the extent of his contributions was the name of the company. I think you're making this far too black and white again. I remember back in 2013 people praised him as a hero. Now we're in 2022, which seems like a different era, like the world flipped itself upside down, and everyone is suddenly a psychologist overusing the word "ego" to describe him as a supervillain as though it's that easy. As I said before to InhaleMusic, it's truly fascinating that everyone loves a show this much for essentially only featuring grey characters, but are themselves far too imbalanced to see both sides and instead use that grey area to project whatever color they want onto so they can have their good VS evil. It's either someone is a hero like Hank, or literally Hitler like Walt. Incredible. I'm tempted to blame the MCU. People didn't need their heroes and villains cut so clearly before it went so big. You're like children.

For some reason, Vince Gilligan massively underused music in the 'Breaking Bad' series and preferred to use colors to signal emotional states except in this specific scene. The way the main theme is used there is so good, it gives me the goose bumps even after all these years. @@riotrecker8978 You can't use music in every scene for any series but they could easily have used it 3 to 4 times more often in Breaking Bad and good musical choices would have considerably improved the final result. I can think of another scene where music did improve the result and that's when they used the super large magnet to destroy Gus Fring's laptop. A somber type of music could also have been used for the 'this is not meth' scene. Perhaps something like The Portal by Origami Pigeon (here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2bbn353oJx_mZo) Two series where a lot of music is used and it lends very well to the experience are The Alienist and The Expanse.

Gretchen was the catalyst for the entire story. She was Walter's lab assistant at Gray Matter, they fell in love, got engaged, and everything was fine, but she inadvertently triggered Walter's massive inferiority complex simply because her family was wealthier than his. Consequently, he dumped her, sold his share in Gray Matter, and cast himself into financial and professional ruin. I picture maybe at like the third to last episode or something we see Saul walk into an unknown building and as the camera slowly pans out, we see it’s the famous office from BB and the theme is playing right as we realize what it is.

When I finished in 2014, after that I tried to watch many series but quit watching halfway through untill recently in December 2019 i started watching Money Heist (La Casa De Papel). After breaking bad it truly amazed me. So anyone want to watch a new series then try Money Heist. A must watch. If you have never loved your professor you gonna love the one in it for sure.

The fact that they used the theme song in this moment as if it says “yes, this is what it had all been about.” His pride and his feelings of being unappreciated for his genius, it was what led him to do everything he did. He wanted to become the best at something, and he got what he wanted at a steep cost.

Breaking bad is the rarest case of master TV. Not only is Vince Gilligan responsible for the existence of this great show, but also the people who directed, wrote, and produced the elements for each episode. The music, symbolism, storytelling, and connection with the audience are all because of everyone who contributed to this creation. Congratulations.

This show had the dark ending it needed to have. Gretchen and Elliot go from offering to pay for Walt’s treatment to lying about his contribution to Gray Matter Technologies on national TV. Naturally, Walt threatens to murder both of them and forces them to give his drug money to his kids. The only happy ending was Walt freeing Jesse, which is exactly how it should be. This show had possibly the best ending of any show I’ve ever seen.

Walt was ready to turn himself in just as Saul told him so but seeing Elliot and Gretchen undermining him reminded him he's got unfinished bussiness to deal with. This scene is awesome, showcasing the theme as a "one last ride" for Heisenberg.
