The woman at the party is "Gretchen" who was in the flashback scenes with Walt in Grad school. The party scene was to allow you to see just how wealthy Gretchen and her husband Elliot became with their "Gray Matter" company. But also to let you see what Walt was involved in before and how he was part of their initial research as the guys said "Walt is the White in Gray Matter". That is all I can tell you since it's what they showed.

Pseudo is an abbreviation for pseudoephedrine (Sudafed.) Back in the day Sudafed was sold on store shelves, but once the Federal Government realized that it can be used as an ingredient in meth production pharmacies started putting it behind the counter so they could limit how much people could buy. I had seasonal allergies as a kid, and remember when they started doing that.

During his chemistry class scene, Walt talks about "explosive reactions" when using the right compounds. Again, this show has a lot of intricate details in every other scene that you might miss. The last scene after the explosion at Tuco's compound was the birth of "Heinsenberg" which is Walt's alter ego.

@4:18 pseudo = pseudoephedrine (a decongestant). The ephedrine in pseudo is one of the main chemicals needed to make methamphetamine (by most of the most common methods anyway). Use of pseudo for this is one reason you now have to go to the pharmacy counter to buy it (instead of off the shelf like you used to), have to present ID, and are limited to a certain amount per month. I used to dismantle meth and other illicit type laboratories for the DEA. Now that pseudo is so much more tightly restricted in the US, almost all the large scale meth labs in the US moved back to Mexico quite a few years ago. All that remains (there are always exceptions of course) in the US are a plethora of users who now make a few grams at a time using something called the "one pot method." Essentially a tiny reaction in a single bottle. These can often ignite or explode like little molotov cocktails when the bottle melts or otherwise ruptures during the chemical reaction and the solvents inside ignite when exposed to oxygen. Search "one pot explosions" on YT and you will find plenty of videos of this for training purposes for police and fire departments.
@MotherofImps
@MotherofImps Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this info, it was really interesting! Question: BB often makes note of the smell from cooking meth...do meth labs really smell that bad?
@timothyhedrick5295
@timothyhedrick5295 Жыл бұрын
@@MotherofImps Generally yes. There are many pathways (recipes which are unfortunately all over the Internet) for all the chemical reactions needed to make meth, but the most common in the US was the Red Phosphorus (or Red P) method. This method (and some others) uses a lot of solvent (acetone, camp fuel). All these generate a lot of “nail cleaner” type chemical smells that can be quite strong. In S1E2 Walt throws a bunch of red phosphorous into a flame to generate phosphine gas to try to kill Crazy-8 and his minion in the camper. In a later episode, Walt tells a guy buying solvents, chemicals, and matches in a hardware store (obviously making meth) that he needs to buy a different kind of matches if he wants to scrape red phosphorus off them. Later Walt moves onto a method called P2P which involves real precursors rather than a bunch of cr-p you buy at a hardware store that you concert into precursors. BB obviously had some good technical advisors.

The greatness of him being a chemistry genius is that he is fascinated by the reaction that occurs when chemicals come face to face with each other. Which in turn is a metaphor for what is happening to him. What changes within him by reacting to what he has to come face to face with. Just like the chemistry he is a metamorphosis of his environment.

1:11 everyone (should) know that short-circuiting a battery will heat up quickly and could result in a fire depending on what type of battery it is, don't even need to be a car guy much less a scientist to know that. how realistic that reaction was is debatable, to me it's exaggerated even with gasoline fumes it wouldn't explode like that. something like a lithium-ion battery used in electric cars might result in more violent fire if damaged but a regular lead-acid battery would probably just melt the squeegee assuming it stayed in place which in itself is doubtful.

This is, the best show... I've ever seen or maybe will ever see. When it's over, yall will never look at tv the same. You'll sit there and ask yourselves, "well what do we do with life now? What's the purpose even, what can I possibly watch now?..." and you'll contemplate these flooding questions for a long while, and in the end you'll find the answer; there is nothing else. Nothing we watch from this day forward, will come close to comparing.. and then you'll be depressed for a few months. And then a year goes by. And then, like I am now (THANKS 😊) YOU'LL be sitting there, mindlessly scrolling through the endless choices of shows and movies to try and quench that thirtmst it left ya with, and you'll see it pop up under "watch again" and realize, it's the only show worth watching. 😉

Here's as short of an explanation as I can think of for the conversation at 4:09 The term used here is "pseudo" (from late Latin meaning essentially, "being apparently rather than actually as stated'). In this context I am assuming one of two things: 1) It could be that the guy is offering a simulated version of the product in question or 2) He is more likely offering to provide a "pseudo" version of one of the main chemical components used in making the product. Since the guy starts by *_asking_* for product, the second is much more likely as the actual ingredient has become more difficult to obtain than it was before its popularity escalated for illegal purposes. Wow! After that attempt to explain without triggering the KZbin algorithms I feel like I just wrote a short dissertation! 😅😆
@jflaugher
@jflaugher Жыл бұрын
Asia, to answer your question, "What is pseudo?" Pseudo is short for "Pseudoephedrine" (PSE) - which is the main ingredient used to make methamphetamine. PSE is a nasal decongestant typically found in nonprescription cold, allergy, and sinus medications, making it an easy source for people who operate illegal meth labs to obtain this precursor chemical.

Better yet is what Werner Heisenberg is famous for: Uncertainty Principle-that while you can predict where a particle is, you can't predict, with certainty, how fast that particle is moving (and vice versa). This is what Walter is doing, you cant predict where he is going next, what he's going to do. He's a wild card at this point. And that is what makes a person dangerous. The most dangerous serial killers, for example, the ones that are the hardest to catch, are the ones that pick random people--as opposed to the ones who have a "type", like Ted Bundy (women with straight brown hair parted in the middle), for example.

I always felt this is such an important episode that got overlooked. It's not fancy with any jaw dropping moments, but there is a VERY important character personality trait that's discovered: Walt's pride. He has a choice, he could have taken the job with Elliott and Gretchen, but because his pride and ego won't let him, he takes the choice that will ultimately destroy him and his family. Another show that I love is Buffy the vampire slayer and theres an episode where one of her old friends is dying of cancer and wanted to be turned into a vampire and tells her he doesnt have a choice. She said "you have a choice, you dont have a good choice but you have a choice." As stupid as it sounds I always take that quote in life.

Jesse was supposed to die in season 1, but thanks to the popularity of his character and fun magnetic charisma of Aaron Paul, he stayed past that. How much though? well that i wont spoil but i know you guys are ahead already.

Omg y'all understood he just wanted to keep some dignity. Ty. He didn't want pity from Elliot, or anyone. I wouldn't either. And I love how y'all sped up Skylar making excuses for sharing info that wasn't hers to share. 8:10 Cool editing.

I can't possibly imagine what it must feel like to get a death sentence diagnosis, but that intervention scene... Bryan Cranston nailed that scene. What does it feel like to fear death while everyone is telling you what you are supposed to do? Amazing scene. And Marie... this was the first episode I started to like her character more. Justice for Hugo, he's a goddamn saint! Also, welcome to the party, Heisenberg!

I mean TBF I'd do anything to try to keep hubby alive, even if it means I get charity for him. I know its not ideal but if my insurance couldn't cover and we struggled, I was pregnant, etc. I'd do whatever I could think of, I need my husband, the father of my child. I'm not mad at her..

“Leave a message at the BOOM!” 😂😂 This is such an amazing show. Every episode you think it can’t possibly get any worse. And somehow they just keep topping what already happened. But it never feels like a stretch, like they just added it for the drama. Everything makes sense and it’s believable. I feel like that’s so rare for show writers to get right. And they nailed it!

I'm not sure if someone mentioned it or not, but there's only 7 episodes in the first season because of the writer's strike at the time. The second episode of Season 2 was supposed to be the finale of Season 1.

connecting the pos and neg terminals of the battery would short out the electric circuits of the car I guess in theory. idk if would cause the car to explode but maybe the fuel pump in the gas tank might spark and then boom...

Great job recognizing Gretchen is the same woman from that flashback also you all said previously would’ve been nice to know Hank before I did this crime stuff but I’m sure you realize now Walt’s pride refuses to accept any charity he wants to earn it himself and be the man also HEISENBERG IS BORN

Before I forget: you guys have to watch "El Camino" when you're done with the series. It's a Breaking Bad spin-off. Great movie.

I wouldn’t call it a spin off, it’s just a continuation of the ending because everyone wanted to see where Jesse ended up. They did a great job with it. Didn’t feel any different from the series. Just a really long final episode.

It traumatized me. I'm an optimist and this is a realistic/pessimistic show. It's easier watching with reactors and especially these two😬😂
