Pseudo is an abbreviation for pseudoephedrine (Sudafed.) Back in the day Sudafed was sold on store shelves, but once the Federal Government realized that it can be used as an ingredient in meth production pharmacies started putting it behind the counter so they could limit how much people could buy. I had seasonal allergies as a kid, and remember when they started doing that.

@4:18 pseudo = pseudoephedrine (a decongestant). The ephedrine in pseudo is one of the main chemicals needed to make methamphetamine (by most of the most common methods anyway). Use of pseudo for this is one reason you now have to go to the pharmacy counter to buy it (instead of off the shelf like you used to), have to present ID, and are limited to a certain amount per month. I used to dismantle meth and other illicit type laboratories for the DEA. Now that pseudo is so much more tightly restricted in the US, almost all the large scale meth labs in the US moved back to Mexico quite a few years ago. All that remains (there are always exceptions of course) in the US are a plethora of users who now make a few grams at a time using something called the "one pot method." Essentially a tiny reaction in a single bottle. These can often ignite or explode like little molotov cocktails when the bottle melts or otherwise ruptures during the chemical reaction and the solvents inside ignite when exposed to oxygen. Search "one pot explosions" on YT and you will find plenty of videos of this for training purposes for police and fire departments.
@MotherofImps Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this info, it was really interesting! Question: BB often makes note of the smell from cooking meth...do meth labs really smell that bad?
@timothyhedrick5295 Жыл бұрын
@@MotherofImps Generally yes. There are many pathways (recipes which are unfortunately all over the Internet) for all the chemical reactions needed to make meth, but the most common in the US was the Red Phosphorus (or Red P) method. This method (and some others) uses a lot of solvent (acetone, camp fuel). All these generate a lot of “nail cleaner” type chemical smells that can be quite strong. In S1E2 Walt throws a bunch of red phosphorous into a flame to generate phosphine gas to try to kill Crazy-8 and his minion in the camper. In a later episode, Walt tells a guy buying solvents, chemicals, and matches in a hardware store (obviously making meth) that he needs to buy a different kind of matches if he wants to scrape red phosphorus off them. Later Walt moves onto a method called P2P which involves real precursors rather than a bunch of cr-p you buy at a hardware store that you concert into precursors. BB obviously had some good technical advisors.

1:11 everyone (should) know that short-circuiting a battery will heat up quickly and could result in a fire depending on what type of battery it is, don't even need to be a car guy much less a scientist to know that. how realistic that reaction was is debatable, to me it's exaggerated even with gasoline fumes it wouldn't explode like that. something like a lithium-ion battery used in electric cars might result in more violent fire if damaged but a regular lead-acid battery would probably just melt the squeegee assuming it stayed in place which in itself is doubtful.

Here's as short of an explanation as I can think of for the conversation at 4:09 The term used here is "pseudo" (from late Latin meaning essentially, "being apparently rather than actually as stated'). In this context I am assuming one of two things: 1) It could be that the guy is offering a simulated version of the product in question or 2) He is more likely offering to provide a "pseudo" version of one of the main chemical components used in making the product. Since the guy starts by *_asking_* for product, the second is much more likely as the actual ingredient has become more difficult to obtain than it was before its popularity escalated for illegal purposes. Wow! After that attempt to explain without triggering the KZbin algorithms I feel like I just wrote a short dissertation! 😅😆
@jflaugher Жыл бұрын
Asia, to answer your question, "What is pseudo?" Pseudo is short for "Pseudoephedrine" (PSE) - which is the main ingredient used to make methamphetamine. PSE is a nasal decongestant typically found in nonprescription cold, allergy, and sinus medications, making it an easy source for people who operate illegal meth labs to obtain this precursor chemical.

Better yet is what Werner Heisenberg is famous for: Uncertainty Principle-that while you can predict where a particle is, you can't predict, with certainty, how fast that particle is moving (and vice versa). This is what Walter is doing, you cant predict where he is going next, what he's going to do. He's a wild card at this point. And that is what makes a person dangerous. The most dangerous serial killers, for example, the ones that are the hardest to catch, are the ones that pick random people--as opposed to the ones who have a "type", like Ted Bundy (women with straight brown hair parted in the middle), for example.

It's not fancy with any jaw dropping moments, but there is a VERY important character personality trait that's discovered: Walt's pride. He has a choice, he could have taken the job with Elliott and Gretchen, but because his pride and ego won't let him, he takes the choice that will ultimately destroy him and his family. Another show that I love is Buffy the vampire slayer and theres an episode where one of her old friends is dying of cancer and wanted to be turned into a vampire and tells her he doesnt have a choice. She said "you have a choice, you dont have a good choice but you have a choice." As stupid as it sounds I always take that quote in life.

It really is a crazy sad story, and the acting in this by everybody is stellar.
