Episode 120 of "That Synth Show" ‪@behringer‬ CLONES KORGS ICONIC MINI POPS 7 AND MORE MAYBE
The Korg (Keio) Mini-Pops 7 released in 1966, featured 15 drums sounds and 20 patterns. This machine is one of the defining drum machines in the history of electronic music.
Jean-Michel Jarre used it throughout his breakthrough album, Oxygene. Some rhythms were achieved by overlaying two of the presets in a manner not intended by the machine's original design. Équinoxe Part V, VI and VII featured the Rock 1 pattern.
Aphex Twin used it on his album Syro, and in homage named a single "minipops 67 [120.2]". Echo and the Bunnymen also used the Mini-Pops 7 drum machine.

The trouble with Behringer clones is that they often save money by making them smaller than the original. Can be difficult to use those knobs, switches amd buttons.

My, admittedly uninformed, opinion is that designing something from scratch is as difficult as recreating something that already existed in the past, for the discerning ears of the fans and critics. Shoehorning existing chips into the circuitry, to behave and sound exactly like old, discontinued chips is not easy. While I personally have little interest in the Mini Pops 7 (albeit, the JMJ vibe does feel awesome), the Linn Drum clone looks like a purchase to me. And, I already have the great Roland TR-8s drum machine. I’d think these both would complement each other rather well. The new firmware upgrade of the TR-8s includes the CR-78 sounds so that scratches the Mini-Pops itch.

Man, I'm seriously burning through my budget right now, just grabbed Hermod+ and that's gonna slow me down for a while but damned if some of these bits of gear don't leave me GASing in some kinda bad way! Pair up that Mini Pops with a Solina, and add in a VCS3 and 2600 for extra fun? Yes, please! Jarre-esque all day long! Might have to go listen to Oxygene again now... Man, I have been holding off on buying a drum machine, hoping Behringer would release any of the ones they promised. I would GAS anytime for a Behringer drum box but they are not releasing them yet. Tough. I now have gas retention syndrome and it is painful. 😢

There are free sample of all of these old drum machines online. Unless you really love the built in patterns, and don’t know how to program, I don’t see any reason to own the originals or a clone. You can just make a kit in an MPC and do everything the original machine could do and much more. Am I missing something?
