The flaw with your analysis is that Shogo Akiyama played only briefly practically only 1 season 142 games in the Majors and came to the MLB at 32 years old. He never quite made an adjustment. That had always been the problem with many of the players coming to MLB. By the time the hit full free agency, they are already around 30 years old, in the waning years of peak performance. Even Hideki Matsui was 29, having played 10 seasons in NPB. Shogo never really assimilated to the new environment. At 32 years, when he came to MLB, he could not make the adjustment. Even when he returned to NPB, his numbers went down significantly. Yoshida was already 30 years old but managed to readjust to MLB, hitting .280, 40 points higher than league average. In Shohei's case. It's different. He came to the US at 23 years old. He had 3 years to adjust, accumulating to 3 MVPs, only missing 1 when Aaron Judge won in 2023. Ichiro was also an exception. He came to the MLB at 27, but still 2 years on average than previous NPB players. He became one of the best hitters ever. This may have something do with the torturous training regiments NPB coaches installs in their team. Players exhaust their prime there. Shintaro Sasaki, projected to be number 1 in the NPB draft, foregoed the draft and decided to play directly to College in the US. Sasaki's dad is Shohei's former coach. It is very difficult to access Asian players going to MLB because they are either passing their prime or had already reached their peak. Shogo had already reached his peak and since he did so, making adjustments was difficult. Seiya Suzuki has a hard time adjusting to the many dimensions in MLB ballpark. In Japan, they are all practically the same. The closest to compare them, I guess, would be like they are comparable to Yankee stadium. Infielders are easier to access in terms of how they will do as dimension factors won't be an issue. There arent many infielders who come from NPB or KBO to make the waves to MLB. They have mostly been Outfielders. Ha-seong Kim is the first I could think of. He won an MLB gold glove and even bested Juan Soto in terms of overall value to the Padres, batting .260 in that same year. 2024 was different because of a torn labrum. Hye-Seong is a step better than Ha-Seong, no relations. He is also only 25, going 26, so there is room to make an adjustment. Kim Hye-Seong is easily the fastest Dodger right now. His hitting projection, in my estimation, is .260- 270, over 45 SBs. But, the Dodgers got more flexible. He is as good as any in SS and Second base. He could be a bottom half hitter who can provide RBIs opportunities for Shohei and Mookie. As good as Shohei is a leadoff, Mookie should still be the leadoff hitter. In moments when in an inning, the 8-9th hitter is leading off, he will fit in harmoniously. I think highly of Kim because of his still growing plate discipline(he actually lowered his strikeout rate to 5 percentage points) and impossible plays, which he appears to make with ease.
@koreanBaseballNerd2 күн бұрын
3:30 You have to consider that in the KBO or the NPB, 'Gold Glove' is NOT given to the player with the best defense abilities like the MLB. Rather, Gold Gloves in these countries are given to the best overall player in a certain position, basically, an award that combines MLB's gold gloves and silver slugger.
@titusk12892 күн бұрын
I’d say that baseball needs to implement a system where each team has to spend a set amount of money that is much higher than what it is currently. So it’s not creating a salary cap, instead teams can still spend as much as they want but the teams that usually pinch pennies are forced to go make moves regardless. As a Twins fan I have dreamt of the day when we are willing to pay a healthy superstar to come play in MN.
@skyygoro2 күн бұрын
The problem with baseball is no salary cap. There needs to be a salary cap and a salary floor. That way, larger markets can't overspend, and small markets have to spend a certain amount. Punishments of breaking rules can include losing draft picks for either side. The bad thing about my Reds is that if they sell, they probably relocate. Which would be devastating.

As a Dodgers AND Guardians fan, there are a lot of similarities between the organizations, terrific at developing talent and loading up the farm for prospective trades, however, the Dodgers ownership group is willing to shell out whatever it takes to maintain a winning environment on and off the field, where as the Guardians and their FO/Development staff are handicapped by an owner unwilling to spend because of the times they missed when they did (Edwin Encarnacion, Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher, Kerry Wood, Mike Zunino are some examples) Cleveland is undoubtedly one of the best baseball cities in the US, evidenced by how Progressive Field looks in the postseason, but as long as the Dolans are running the show, expect more buy low, sell high situations and pray the farm can make a serious run in the playoffs. I've been teased with a Guardians/Dodgers possible world series so many times now, and I want it to happen so bad.

The Dodgers are doing what teams are supposed to do. Improve their team. It's not their fault that other owners of teams in different cities are being cheapskates. They have more money that can be spent on the onfield product that they refuse to use. I keep hearing the argument that they can't compete because of market size and that's Oscar Mayer Bologna. They just refuse to do it. Apparently, they have never heard the saying, You have to spend money, to make money.
@Chinchuchwei_srКүн бұрын
What if you’re willing to spend money, you have the money, but in a world without a paycap as long as the dodgers want him too you’re toast. That’s what a paycap serves to do. Every player in every other league would go to the largest markets for the best off field deals ect but you can’t do that because what’s happening here with baseball would happen. It’s great the dodgers can spend but the system is broken if any one team can commit to $2B in a single calendar year. Dodgers fans pretend like other teams don’t even try to buy dudes. News flash bro… plenty of teams are trying to spend money. If you don’t want BOTH a floor and cap you’re just a dodgers fan who wants to stay spoiled.

I think with all the TV money going around the price of the seat ticket should be cheaper. True, I live in Los Angeles and Dodgers games are EXPENSIVE. I go to the Angels and the prices are back to earth a little. I just think that if your making all this money on TV deals the price of the ticket should be cheaper for the fan but that also should mean owners should be able to afford to pay their players more competitively. Teams like the Pirates get on my nerves because they have players but never invest in cohorts to surround those players and give them a chance to make the playoffs. If you own a team, put the money into the team or sell them to someone or group that will.

Biggest issue I think is owners/front offices that don't put any passion into their players and far-and-away care about their own profits first. After that would be organizations that act like contrarians to the way Dodgers are currently running things, because the Dodgers' organization clearly knows what it's doing, and it's doing it VERY well. To not try to match their production is kind of a waste, and really an insult to the fans because it shows lack of effort by comparison. Then finally, stinky strike and ball calls by stinky umpires.

Even though Kim Ha-son of the Padres has a .350 batting average in the KBO, he can only hit .230 in MLB. KBO pitchers throw slower balls and push with fastballs, so it's easy to hit them back. Furthermore, unlike in Japan and the US, they use balls that fly higher, so it's easy to hit HRs. Mike Ford, a former Yankee and now a player for the Yokohama BayStars, says that the balls in NPB don't fly as high as in MLB. In NPB, Matt Davidson only managed a .210 batting average and 19 home runs, but when he moved to the KBO, he managed a .306 batting average and 46 home runs. The reason for this is that the level of the KBO is so low that Kim's KBO record is not a good reference. This is the kind of background that explains why a batter who fails in Japan ends up hitting a lot in Korea.

Kim rejected more money from the Angels just to have the prestige of being called a Dodger. When cheap owners do decide to try and acquire key players, the players themselves prefer to play for a team like the Yankees or the dodgers because of that prestige. Obviously cheap owners are still a problem but even when they try they get beat out by the big teams like the dodgers so to some extent it’s a problem that should find a solution. Can’t blame the dodgers really though it’s more of an MLB problem

The other thing to factor in though is the state that some teams are in like the Angels. They’re coming off a 99 loss season and have the reputation of wasting 6 years of 2 generational talents. Other teams like the Giants and Mariners have the issue of playing in pitchers parks so that plays a part in turning players away. A lot of things factor into where guys sign. Look at Corbin Burnes. The giants offered him more than the Diamondbacks but he took less since he lives in Arizona
@zhife3103 күн бұрын
@ very true. Corbin also probably took taxes into consideration with Cali having much higher taxes than Arizona . Very tricky situation to balance things out

You solve the problem if your a cheap small market owner by 1. STOP being cheap in FA 2. Show players and fans you actually care about winning 3. Build a winning culture with a good farm system and great management.

@ how would a team like the Rockies get out of their hole? Even if they pursue everyone, their reputation is in the gutter regardless of their willingness to win. Even if they offered Soto a billion dollars they’re stuck with a huge contract and have a mediocre farm.

"this is so unfair. MLB is literally unwatchable" mfs when the Dodgers sign a career .766 OPS player from KBO that turns their insanely stacked world series contender team into an insanely stacked world series contender team: 🤬🤬🤬

I think it is unfair to sign all these players. But teams like the Braves, Phillies, and Brewers aren’t doing anything to compete with the Dodgers or the Yankees. And yes I understand small team can’t afford a Juan soto but the don’t even sign any smaller contract players
@christianhanson7003 күн бұрын
The biggest issue is that there aren't enough teams that are spending over the CBA limit to equalize the playing field. Only like the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees are over the tax. Oakland just proved they have plenty of money that they have just been pocketing.

If 3 years 12 mil is "unfair" for the small market teams what would it take for them to actually sign someone lol.

I believe it's the other 350 millions dollars that you all spent on other players this year that is the real problem! Give me a break! Besides, he didn't want to play for a small market team. Why would he? He wanted to play in the limelight that a big market team has to offer! Most of them do! They come here to get noticed so that they can make the big bucks down the road! Not for KC, MIL of DET! Get real!

6:01 It's not unfair that the Dodgers signed Kim. Angels offered more money. It's fair that the Angels care about winning so little that free agents *avoid* them to avoid the stench of defeat.

I'm sick of people making fun of the Dodgers for getting free agents, but people forget they are a well-run organization with lots of money. Players don't just go there just because of the money.

Every so often a sports organization does something evolutionary in terms of methods or process. The Dodgers have clearly found a way to maximize MLB's current system. Doesn't automatically mean they will win the World Series next year. However, this is clearly setting the Dodgers up to be a serious contender to win the World Series for the next five years. If this plays out right this could be the beginning of a epic run. I certainly see other teams that can spend in this manner emulating the Dodgers methods in terms of creating financing to "get the deal done" for big name F/A's. I'm sure other fan bases especially from mid and small market teams don't like it but they need to find other ways to gain a competitive advantage. Works for Sam Presti in the NBA out in OKC. The knew they couldn't outspend the "big dogs" in their league. So, he became a facilitator of deals and garnered picks along the way to buildout their franchise. Find a way and compete! Because the Dodgers are not playing around!

Golden Gloves in Asian leagues are different than in the MLB. It’s awarded to the best player at each position, not just the best defender at each position.

The strange thing is did the Dodgers go bankrupt a few years back and had no money where did all this money come from?
@MrFox211213 күн бұрын
That was 12-13 years ago, they got a new ownership group made mostly of successful investors, have an $8.25 billion TV deal, sell out most games, always make the post season, and so on and so forth. All of these things and more contribute to where all the money comes from.

What I think is absolutely wrong is the Dodgers are taking everyone, they are a very wealthy and selfish team who only care about themselves and not think about other teams and there futures. They think I’m going to get a World Series ring every year now. it’s going to get to the point where teams might just let the dodgers win or even forfeit the game cause they would already have the mentality they will lose. And Fuzzy tell me what you think of this, the dodgers got Kim and the Angels wanted and could have used him more. Do you think the dodgers were a good fit or the angels would have been the best choice to start out his 26 year old career. All I’m telling you Fuzzy and MLB fans is. “Dodgers are getting ready to ruin baseball” “Manfred is just taking the Dodgers side” tell me what you guys think about Kim. But the Angels still have hope for Santander or Alonso 🤞. Tell me what you think Fuzzy?

Gold Gloves in the KBO aren't a defensive award. It's for the best hitter at that position it's a positional MVP 0 to do with defense. And the options are for two years, so it'd be up to 5 years, 22 million, not 4 yrs
@benjaminsmookler64013 күн бұрын
I think the issue is some owners aren't as invested than others. For example Athletics spent a little money, but are they gonna go all out... NO, because they don't care as much(even though they should so they can start building their new fan base). Now let's look at the Mets, their owner cares, he's gonna spend money. Now I think Miami is strategically building their farm system as well as their future. Back in like 2014-2017, they were unstoppable. Now in their later years, they have no prospects. Last prospect was Jazz and tbh he's not as good as everyone thought. I think they're trying to secure a future, before they actually start spending money. Rangers have an Ex MLB player as their owner, so you know damn right he cares, and he has connections to get players. I can't use Tampa as an example because they're focused on building their stadium, but if I'm being honest I don't see much money spending in their history. I really think some owners treat money like money sometimes and pick what they want to spend it on, and some owners want to spend it on players, and some want to spend it on vacations to the Bahamas.
