When it comes to raising our awareness of the effects of developmental trauma, we find ourselves trying to understand and deprogram our own defence mechanisms, developed in response to trauma and designed to keep our psyche safe in childhood. This defence enabled the brain to suppress, repress and disassociate as children. As we grow into adults this exhibits as adult minimization, denial and even memory loss, all of which make life skills all that more difficult.
In this lecture from Sydney's South Pacific Private - Australia's leading treatment center for trauma, addiction and mental health - we explore the recovery process, breaking free of codependence and how we relearn fundamental coping skills after experiencing developmental trauma. This webinar uses Pia Mellody's ground-breaking book, 'Breaking Free' as the basis for our discussion.

Ive learned alot about dysfunctional families and relationships in the past 8 months. Until you work on your toxic shame and inner critic - you will keep self medicating. Its such a complex subject. Im thankful for videos and self help books. 👍

Book: Power vs Force. Within it, there's a scale of frequencies 1 to 1000. Love: 528. Hope: 310. Fear :200. Patriotism 175, Anger 145 . .and SHAME is TWENTY. Very LOW frequency, but it's used the most in society. It's in-humane. It quotes that 85% of the world population is under 200. Fear based. This slone should explain our society, the world we reside in. It's literally and figuratively, sick. Also Brene Brown TedX talks is a researcher (many degrees) on shame & vulnerability. She's an excellent story teller too about her own. This goes hand in hand with this material.

This IS me! Wow.....thank you for this. I am going to purchase Breaking Free and the workbook. My therapist will have more of an understanding of what I am trying to express. Question: Do you do online group therapy? It's a long trip from Florida to Australia. 😒

This is amazing. You cut right to the core Co-dependency, NPD are running rampant n families are the norm Not that PUBLIC school system would care but having surveys & education on these topics and narcissist personality disorder defined would or could possibly help the child earlier on. Being able to define, "What IT is" is a big part to catch it now as opposed to 20, 30, 40 or 50 years later. Now once we can get help with all this . .discovering the scam being played on the people is yet another rabbit hole to delve into. (Everything can be verified by you). Your ALL-CAPS-NAME on your birth CERTIFICATE is not you but a corporate dead entity, bonded securitized and traded on the stock exchange. It's your Cestui Que Vie Trust.(started in 1666). The one you didn't know existed. Its Public vs Private. HJR 192 from 1933 also plays a big part in it. All the courts are article 1 military courts, maritime admiralty law/courts.You have to WANT to know. Most fo not.,You gotta weigh your curiosity against your indoctrinated beLIEfs. The ego will do anything and everything not to admit it's been bamboozled. KZbin is a great resource but everyone teachithis, documents it and still tells you, to ALWAYS do your own research. Public school system is about memorizing, not learning. They kill curiosity, promote "dovas you are told". Good robot. We beLIEve what teachers, adults/authority figures, the media, celebrities, politicians, doctors & "scientists" tell us. Who are we to question THEM? Ya know. I know our ancients were more intelligent than us. They didn't have tele-vision programming. Thank you for this video. Where were you decades ago?

I think the point is that no one set out to hurt us - they were expressing their own hurts - and we can take the adult line and understand it and do what's needed to heal.

You were doing so well......until you started with the magical thinking for solutions. The entire analysis was about what science and rational analysis has found about how trauma negatively affects people. And the solution is a higher power? Rational thinking says we are a true miracle, because it has no explanation, and it is awesome, and don't bring a higher power into it to make everything subjective.

I though the speaker did a good job of emphasizing that a power greater than ourselves can be the group, others in recovery or simply a power beyond our own negative thoughts. Magical thinking is believing we can recover without something greater than ourselves. Well, if we could do that we wouldn't need help would we?

The higher power is ultimately condescending.. implying that the power isn't within you, which I don't think is true. We need another to heal from developmental trauma,.but an equal,.not a higher.
