Hey Brandon, I will soon be installing a rebuilt powerhead on my Evinrude 1982 15 HP outboard. I’m curious, why couldn’t the outboard be broken in using a drum rather than cruising around on the lake? It seems like it could be easier to break it in prior to putting it on the transom of the boat. But if that’d be a mistake I’d sure like to know. I’d like to get that 10 hours completed as quickly as possible.

Brandon, I have really enjoyed and got sooooo much help from your videos on Outboard motor repairs. But I am in need of advice on how to replace a bad port side water tube on a 1977 Evinrude 115HP with the double tupe water pump. I rebuilt pump and in trying to reinstall back on motor the port side tube missed the guide and it bent the tube and is now way to short to fit into the pump. Can you guide me to help on what I need to do to replace both tubes, Thanks David from Iowa

Do you have any parts to Frankenstein a motor ? That would be cool ! I know it’s been done but take a 50’s OMC and retrofit CDI and new style ignition along with a slide carb and fuel pump ! Or make a shallow water drive for one of your motors ! But make something like a Champion Racer would be fun !

Hi Brandon, just joined recently, I've got a question, have a 1960 Evinrude 18hp was wondering if there's a way to rebuild or refresh the lower unit rubber mounts, instead of buying them, because there expensive at 92$ apiece, I'm talking about the two that are located right under the power head on the lower unit

Shouldn't you ground the spark plug wires when doing a compression test? It's great to get to know the actual compression numbers on a new old Evinrude. It's a shame OMC never provided any official numbers

Yeah, the 80s were a weird time for little outboards. But hey, most of the important stuff you can buy new, and everything else can be had second hand. The engine will last you long while if somewhat cared for.

I have the same 6hp Evinrude on an 8' Fiberglass tri-hull dinghy. It'll do 25 knots on a calm day. It's a very reliable motor if you replace the little tube in the carburetor with one more gas and ethanol resistant like FEP.

Wooo guest star in the video. Hey you said only using half available power... why is that?
@JohnSmith-pl2bk3 жыл бұрын
It's part of the run-in procedure not to thrash the engine with full power or long periods of partial power without variations.... It allows the machined surfaces inside the engine to "hone" themselves smooth.....each surface e.g. crankshaft bearing. rubs against another e.g con rod big end and is especially needed in 2 stroke motors where the lubrication is provided by the oil being mixed in with the fuel, and both flowing through the engine...... By the end of the 8 hours of less than full power either continuous or wide open throttle runs...the engine, after warm up from cold, can operate at any throttle setting for as long as you want it to....everything is smoothed out...run-in.
@bigears44263 жыл бұрын

If it's new it doesn't need a compression test. Put the proper break in mix to the fuel tank. And yeah i went to OMC school 86,87,88 in Parsippany NJ. Ed Runy was my outboard instructor
@JohnSmith-pl2bk3 жыл бұрын
@@mikehumphreys7074 Do your own research but 50:1 is usual for a 2 stroke of this age for break in, and rumour has it that if you use the outboard infrequently thereafter, it might pay to keep it at that since with twice the oil in the mix, it coats the inside of the motor better for long term storage. Also make sure to use a marine 2 stroke mix oil, TCW-3 rating, as this is formulated for water cooled engines and has decent moisture inhibitors.
@JohnSmith-pl2bk3 жыл бұрын
@@mikehumphreys7074 Mike, why would you use less oil in a higher friction engine situation? Use the best oil you can afford...and a 50:1 mix....

I have seen a couple that looks similar to it in all-white from Canada (I think) that appear to be plastic injection molded.
