My natural inclination is to blame writers, but in this case I'm going to partially defend MCU writers. Conjecture: the front office obsession with turning Secret Wars/Kang Dynasty into something bigger than Infinity War/Endgame caused every project to be weighed down with expectations that prioritized something in the future over the current project.

I donʻt agree. Being a consumer of Marvel since 1974, I can honestly say, more is more imho. Never in my life did I ever think I would see some of my childhood heroes come to life like in the movies with cgi. Now that its here and has been for a while now, I want more of it. Flop or no flop. The kid in me wants all of my heroes to be on the big or small screen. I go to the movies for every single one. I think the reason why people donʻt see the movie is complicated, but for sure economics and life challenges happen. To me once itʻs made, revenue stream will continue in other manners, so they could make their money back that way. It all depends on trusting in the creatives and their vision. To me, keep building it, and we will see it, and remember there are new Marvel fans born every minute.

I'm in total agreement with you. I remember being excited watching reruns of Batman (1966) or catching Incredible Hulk (1978) on Friday nights. There wasn't that much in the way of live action superhero films and shows back then but the little we got, we always found something to enjoy about them. All the anger and keyboard pounding by current fans because a movie or show isn't perfect is perplexing to me. When I finally seen the Amazing Spider-Man (1977) later as a teen, I laughed a bit with my siblings but still found bits and parts enjoyable. The same thing with The Greatest American Hero (1981), Superman (1952), Wonder Woman (1975), Superboy (1988), etc. I'm even going back watching the movie serials of the 1940's (Batman, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Superman, etc.) because I can focus on the enjoying aspects of them and not get all hung up on anything bad. Then there's stuff from the decades in between like Nightman (1997), Swamp Thing (the 80's movies and 90's television show), The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Black Scorpion, Manimal, Isis, etc., etc., etc.

Marvel needs to take the approach used in The Creator, film the entire movie first, do any necessary reshoots, basically have a finished movie before a dime is spent on visual effects. That would probably cut the expense of these movies by a third. The creator was made for less than $100 million and has top notch filmography and visual effects.

Those budget have gotten insane!!! I just watch Universal/Blumhouses The Invisible Man (2020) again and was thinking how well done it was and how creepy and enjoyable. Then I looked up the budget, $7m. Now, how was Blumhouse able to make a good movie like that for just $7m, with visual effects and Marvel/Disney is spending hundreds of millions?!? I know the levels of visual effects are different, I’m just saying it doesn’t have to be. Make a simple, story driven, compelling movie with a good practical and CG mix for a fraction of the price.

For context, "The Creator" had a budget of $80M and "Godzilla Minus One" had a budget of $15M. Marvel is doing less with budgets much higher and the films are showing significantly diminishing returns.

It's absolutely a spending problem. Budgets are decided before a film goes into production. Yes, sometimes budgets dramatically increase due to troubled production, but Marvel has been irresponsible in the initial budgets approved and in green-lighting and rushing films into production without having a vision for what it is (swapping directors, countless rewrites, re-casting, changing entire sections of the film, extensive reshoots, expecting to fix problems in post with CGI, etc.). These are all top-down problems from the studio level that indicate instability and lack of sound decision-making. Putting 200-250M into films when those are the conditions of making them is inherently irresponsible spending.

I didn’t super enjoy the movie but there are plot threads that need to be dealt with. Maybe the Eternals will appear in other projects before we get a proper sequel. If Iger believes that people don’t care enough about the Eternals for a sequel to do well then putting them in other projects so that people can grow to like them before we get a sequel is the way to go. That and ensuring that they are written well.

I found an article that states that studios keep 60% of ticket, sales and theaters get 40%. I found another article that stated that studios keep 80 to 100% of ticket sales in the first two weeks and then the split drops to 50-50 in subsequent weeks.

Pre-covid I would take my family to the theaters at least every other month, sometimes every month. But now days I would be lucky to go once a year. When tickets for a family of 4 costs $60-70 alone not including popcorn, sodas and other stuff, it's just way to expensive to go out anymore. This why we wait for Bluray/digital releases or just wait for them to release on streaming. Expenses has gotten way to high now days.

Perhaps Guardians of the Galaxy: Arishem’s Judgement. Arishem’s Judgement and the Celestial in the ocean are the two biggest plot threads from the movie that need addressing. It sounds like the Celestial in the ocean might be adresses in the Thunderbolts, so that just leaves the judgement.

I honestly believe the best way to increase creative and productive value for MCU projects would be to have Marvel comic book writers of past and present, work with screenwriters to get the scripts and stories worked out. I bet that will be fix a lot of issues. From there, I'm sure all the other issues can work themselves out. Re-write after re-write, followed by replacing writers, then throw in another 2 or 3 re-writes eventually leads to other aspects of production and production crews having to deal with the added stress of possibly tighter time frames to do what they have to do, i.e. VFX, all while heavy criticism and expected failure reported by media outlets and fandom creates a bubble of negative energy that envelopes production to the point that MCU will just have a revolving door of creative teams.

On base level cutting some cost is pretty good idea - i mean many marvel movies had overblown budget and we seen movies in general that looks at least as good (if not better) made with lot less money and are high quality movies too (writing,cinematogr.). Thing that bothers me some is focus on "surefire" projects. Even at peek MCU i allw felt that their movies were little too similar, little too much in same "marvel feel" and too afraid to experiment and inovate. I am worried that with this Iger-s direction they basicly kill any new ideas and creativity, for basic "safe" stories. 😟

Personally, I was all about the MCU until they started saturating the universe with all the shows and movies. It made it impossible to keep track of how everything was connected which was part of the magic of the mcu. All the movies were connected and made you excited for the next one.

Theatres actually get less than 10% of opening week box office sales the percentage increases over time the longer it's in theatres. This is why theatres love blockbusters that can stay in theatres for weeks

If you look at the cost of Marvel films over the years they simply have increased that’s going to partly be due to inflation but the size of income from the box office has gone down over the years and cost films has gone up. It is simply unsustainable at the vast sum of money. Some of these films cost. The original iron man made a fortune and is vastly better than some of the later movies. Good story, evolving good characters, great direction, wonderful cinematography and good actors, Focus Marvel

Bob Iger thinking Eternals 2 will tank is a boomer take fr. First one was great but with some improved writing, character development, and marketing the second movie would be great. Cast is already stellar, and if it won’t work as a movie it would work even better as a show

I think their problem is I won’t be going to a the theater unless quality improves and we get some big movie that I just do not want to miss in theaters…because most releases I will just wait till it’s on Disney+ I’m already paying Disney to watch it anyways so why would I pay more? Especially with the chance of it not being great.
