Note, play play play play play. Note, play play play play play. Really nice idea, I'm very habit-based and this seems like a fun exercise. gunna try this out!

0:34 This is a great way to give pedagogical form to something I hear a lot from modern bands like Polyphia where they have a sort of chordal/scalar scaffold that they color around. Really solid lesson, Ben!

Thank you for the reminder that the goal of etude is ultimately “have fun playing an instrument”!!! these and many other revelations are why you continue to be a source of creative aspiration for lil ol me!

Excellent! I do the same but with the ascending scale notes at the top. You can actually incorporate that into your solos so it's the best kind of exercise. Another thing you can do is to think of a melody and use that instead of a scale. You can have the improvised parts leading to the melody or scale notes, or have them separate so it sounds like you have two things going at the same time.

Man I love this exercise, I got into music theory seriously over the last years after, being introduced to it by your theory from the ground up. I’m at a point of understanding intervals, modes, harmony, and the basic scales in every key. I’m trying to build a vocabulary to break rules etc so this important.

I've had this problem after practicing scales for two weeks. I put down the guitar in disgust and every time I'd play it for two years after-the same scale patterns when I tried to improvise. DIsgusting. Thanks for the idea!

@BenLevin3 күн бұрын
Yes! It breaks habits because generally we just play long streams of melodic ideas and stop thinking, but the interruption of the scale notes forces you to be mindful of the phrasing in a fresh way!

Practice fills every 4 or 8 repeats A well timed fill leads you into the next section with gusto, especially if it gives a little taste of whats coming up

You say any instrument - how do I apply something like this to drums? Not being facetious; this would be genuinely really useful for me!
@BananaManPL4 күн бұрын
Take a groove you're familiar with, split it at every n-th quarter/eighth/sixteenth note and insert a rudiment there. A five stroke roll here, flam accent there, double paradiddle somewhere else and soon enough you'll find new cool patterns. Give it a spin!
