The planned Super Bowl window likely starts to open next year or the year after that, if it's being planned around JJ McCarthy (which it should be, given he's your first round QB prospect). The Vikings were always planning to sit JJ for at least one full year to let him season and acclimate to the NFL, the injury just made that enforced instead of the plan. Next year is when you start trying to get him starts and game reps to work him into the system, with the goal being either he takes off running that year and you aim for the big one, or 2025 is prep and 2026 is the start of the serious runs. Reclamation projects like Darnold and Jones make sense for years prior to that, when you're trying to keep winning because losing is suckass and leads to bad culture and vibes, but you don't want to throw the raw rookie into the flames to be consumed whole. You assemble the parts of the team AROUND your interim QBs so you can slot the golden goose in there when it's time, rather than shoving them out there behind a shattered O-line to be eaten alive with limited offensive weapons. So far this is working as designed -- the O-line has been getting built up and improved, we've been acquiring more parts so it's not just The Justin Jefferson Show, et cetera. Expect more O-line parts and probably an RB in this offseason, along with new cornerbacks, and you'll have a very complete Vikings squad ready in 2025 for McCarthy to make his first moves at the helm of.

Another angle to this is that if KOC can rehabilitate QBs they can be traded for a LOT of draft capital. QBs are by far the most important players. So basically fix some broken QBs then sell them off for a profit.

Great move by Jones to go to the Vikings. KOC has proven he is a QB whisperer. Jones takes a break from the pressure pot and recalibrates under KOC. We see what happens with Darnold. And if the shit hits the fan injury wise, Vikings have a capable guy that is very similar to Sam. It's a win win for sure

I think Jones is the Vikings' Darnold replacement for next year, the rehabbing veteran on a one-year prove-it deal whose job is to roll out there and give McCarthy as much time to season as possible before he has to be put in. He's not likely to immediately get another big boy starter contract elsewhere given how his time in NYC ended, and thanks to his Giants contract he doesn't have to, financially. Starting in Minnesota lets him try to rehabilitate himself under KOC's tutelage with a very solid team around him, and the Vikings get a little more time to not throw McCarthy into the fire before he's nice and ready. Everyone wins! Including hopefully the Vikings on the field of play.

I'm honestly not sure. I feel like Jones gets a similar one-year prove-it deal like Darnold did to stand in front of McCarthy for season 2. It'd give McCarthy more time to season, which is always beneficial, and if Jones sucks out loud early on then he can be replaced in fairly short order and remanded to backup duty. I was thinking this was a course the Vikings might want to take, but the problem was finding a veteran QB who'd be willing to take a job they'd KNOW would be an interim position in front of a rookie with no real long-term prospects. Jones fits that bill -- he's already gotten a Big Boy contract from the Giants, so he's made a nice bag, but he also knows his long-term career needs major rehabilitation because he played himself out of New York, and he said as much. What better place to work on rehabbing himself and laying foundations for the second half of his career than under KOC's tutelage on the Island of Misfit QBs?

I think there was a lot of assumption that the Vikings saying they were not starting McCarthy this year was a "we're not starting him until we start losing games and the fanbase calls for him to be thrown in the fire", but the KOC-KAM regime has shown itself to be very concerned with player development, and I think they were dead serious. It's not hard to look at Green Bay's long-term success at QB, where they always make sure their new QBs take multiple years to learn and acclimate behind veteran talent, and think a QB-centric coach like KOC wouldn't take notice of that too.
